HT1766 My iPad has a frozen message on the screen which says "This iPad hasn't been backed up.  Backups happen when this iPad is plugged, etc."  I have connected the iPad to a power source and the iPad charged but the message is still frozen on my device.

My iPad is frozen with the message that the iPad is not backed up.  I thought that it automatically backed up when I plugged the device into a power source.  I have done that but the machine will not even open.

Try giving it a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds or so until it reboots and see if that helps.
