  • Using iCloud and iTunes match, should I still wirelessly sync with my computer iTunes?

Using an iPhone 4 with the latest updates. I keep getting an error message syncing over my wireless network that says "Cannot sync phone. There are too many files open" from iTunes on my compter. Should I turn off the wireless syncing now that I'm using iCloud and iTunes Match?
There are 4 iPhones that are using this feature on our network, plus AppleTV 2.

Even though you have iTunes match and iCloud, there are several other types of media that aren't included in either of the services, such as movies, photos etc, if you aren't syncing any of these to your phones, then you may well be able to turn iTunes wifi sync off.
Personally, I would want to find the cause of the error message and use the iTunes sync for backup, I consider it far more reliable and convenient than iCloud for back up

  • HT204136 Restoring from iCloud and iTunes backup used together

How would I restore my iPhone if I'm doing iCloud and iTunes backup together? The articles lists that as an option, but when it comes time to restore, can't you only pick one to restore from?

  • I have mulitple copies appearing on my ipad after using icloud and itunes match, how do I get only 1 copy to appear?

I am new to the Ipad, I just got the Ipad with retina display in and only have a 16gb memory. I wanted to use Icloud for my music and other items, but when I started using Icloud and Itunes match, my Ipad has up to 3 of the same song listed on the song list. and will repeat when I am listening to my music. I was wondering how I can get those multiple copies go away to just 1.

Sorry, but without a backup in iCloud or iTunes on your computer, your data is gone and can't be restored anymore.

  • HT1386 I replaced my iPad and now don't see the iPad backup in iTunes.  Any advice?  Should I use my latest iPhone backup or will that create problems?

I swapped out my broken iPad for a new one, and went to sync in iTunes and only see my iPhone backups.  Should I use those to back it up (most of the apps are the same across both, and same with the email, calendar, and contacts settings).  Will that create problems if I use the same backup for two devices?  Thanks!

No it will not create problems but if the iPad that you got is running an iOS less than what you are running on the iPhone, you will have to update the iPad first, before you can restore from the phone backup. You can't use the backup of a newer iOS on a device running an older iOS without updating the device first.

  • I just purchased a macbook air, and because of the limited memory (256 gb) and my HUGE music library, I need aomne form of external storage.  i am considering either using iCloud for iTunes, or purchasing an external hard drive.  suggestions or opinions?

hi!  just purchased a macbook air, and because of the limited storage (256 gb) and my massive music library, I am going to find an alternative storage method.  I am debating between an external hard drive and utilizing iCloud. icloud makes me a little nervous....having my entire library in "the cloud" and deleted off of my desktop - do most of you who use icloud for music and photos have a backup on external hard drive anyway? So....iCloud vs. external hard drive for storage.  Thoughts?  opinions?  thanks!

iTunes Match allows you to put 25,000 songs in the Cloud. At present it isn't possible to add more storage but I wouldn be surprised if that isn't an option offered in the future. With iTunes Match you allow Apple to match your songs (purchased from Apple, ripped from your own CDs are purchased elsewhere). When Apple cannot match a song a copy of yours is uploaded.
Once the match process is complete (for my 24,000+ collection it took a couple days) the fun begins. Since my MBA can't hanle all my music, I use iTunes Match to download a small selection of my music every couple of weeks. My music remains in the cloud even when I delete them from my computer and if I have WiFi accesss I can get new songs. It is a great service and much more convenient than keeping your MBA's music on an external drive.

  • Using iCloud as additional backup.

    HI
i have a 5c. 8gb. Constantly running out of space to take images when I'm travelling. Is it possible to use iCloud to store images/video, delete the image from my phone, allowing me to be able to take more images using the phone, but still get access to the "deleted" images/video via iCloud when I get home Or view them on my device I.e use iCloud as additional storage and not just "back up".
when I go to delete an image it gives a warning that "this photo will be deleted from photo stream on all your devices"
if I get on wifi, and do a back up, the deleted image will be removed from iCloud??
I Want to be able to keep some deleted images in iCloud, how? Or do I have this wrong, can I save images and video to iCloud and remove them from my device??
    Many thanks.

In its current state, iCloud offers backup which does include photos but is only designed for use when completely restoring a phone after a problem and it offers Photo Stream which is designed for transferring photos from one device to another device. Neither of those is what you are looking for. According to the following link to iOS8 Preview (to be released this Fall), a solution for you is coming soon: https://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/photos/
If you need something in the meantime you may want to consider a 3rd party service such as Flickr.

  • Using iCloud as Contacts Backup?

    Hi,
after upgrading to iOS 5 and iCloud, I got some issues with my contacts. They seem to be duplicated, although all native apple apps swallow the dupes (e.g. "miCal" doesn't). Now the miCal team asked me to delete all contacts on my iPhone and get them back from iCloud. Is that possible? I guess when deleting contacts in the iPhone, they should also be deleted in the cloud?
Thanks for making me wiser :-)

You should never lose contacts under any circumstances.
Although contacts are included with the iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer where such important data should be available with or without an iPhone or any cell phone. Not a good idea to depend on a cell phone for such important data which can be lost or stolen or damaged beyond repair.
In addition, there are a number of free email accounts that support syncing contacts over the air including an iCloud account, Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail.
If you are not syncing contacts over the air with an iCloud account and not backing up your iPhone wirelessly with your iCloud account, your iPhone's backup is being updated by iTunes on your computer which is updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
With Windoze, contacts can be synced with Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 along with syncing calendar events, notes, and reminders, or with the address book app used by Outlook Express and by Windows Mail called Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only. With a Mac, contacts can be synced with the Address Book app. This is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
If the supported address book app on your computer is not used and has no contacts available, before the first sync for this data enter one contact in the supported address book app on your computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.

  • I have been using icloud for itunes and aps purchases, but now I would like to create a new icloud account so that my calendars sync without having to plug in ... how do I do this, as my phone won't let me change the icloud account

My husband and I have been using our iCloud account for music and ap purchases only.  I have decided that i would like to now create a new icloud account so that i can sync my calendar and contacts.  I read about doing this online and it looks simple and easy ... and yet, when i go to switch it on my iphone, there is only 1 place for an icloud account (our shared account) and it is greyed out so that I cannot change it.  How do I do this?

Whenever a menu choice is grayed out, that is because you have Restrictions turned on in Settings.  Be sure to turn it off.
You are confusing an itunes store account with an icloud account.  You two can continue using the same ID for itunes (thus sharing purchased music, apps, etc.), but you really should have separate accounts (different IDs) for icloud, since an account is intended for one user to keep his/her devices in sync.
To create a new icloud account, go to
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
Then go to Settings>icloud and scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Delete Account.  (have restrictions turned off)  That will disconnect the device from the account but will not delete data in icloud or other devices.  Then sign in using the new ID.

  • Use iCloud with a backup iPhone without destroying original iCloud backup

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 5 which i need to send to repair for few days. Device is fully backup with iCloud.
I have a backup iPhone 4 to use for the week i wont have my iPhone 5.
iPhone 4 is now after a hard reset and completely empty. i want just to restore my contacts and calendar to my backup iPhone 4 so the original iPhone 5 backup will not be destroyed so i can restore my repaired iPhone 5 when it's come back.
What is the proper way to do this?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Unfortunately if you migrate to iCloud the only thing that he will be able to use on your pre-lion mac is the iCloud mail account. You will be able to access your calendars, contacts etc at iCloud.com, but I suspect you already know that.

  • Using iCloud to remotely backup files on a Mac

    Hi,
I use Time Machine to back up to to a local hard drive. However, I like the idea of essential documents being backed up outside the house, so have been using SugarSync to back-up my documents folder (which contains a mix of formats, including Word, Pages, Numbers, InDesign etc). It works very well but there is a small monthly cost.
Now iCloud Drive is here, I wonder if it would make sense to use that instead. However, I can't see an obvious way to do it without changing my filing system.
I did try creating an alias of my Documents folder and dropped it into the iCloud Drive folder but, while it appeared to my there on my Mac, when I looked for it on iCloud.com it wasn't visible. And even is it was, I'm not sure it would be automatically kept up to date.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks
    Phi

I believe you can keep the organization you have within the Documents folder by creating a new Documents folder on the iCloud and dragging the contents of your Documents folder into it like similar to my OT's General Storage folder.
However, after that you'll have to access the documents via the iCloud Drive icon in the Finder sidebar and not via your current Documents folder.
You might be able to sync your documents folder to the Documents folder in the iCloud Drive on your Mac with a syncing application like Synk Pro, ChronoSync or similar.
You'll also have to purchase additional iCloud Drive space in order to accommodate your files via the System/iCloud preference pane:

  • Should I use time machine to backup server?

moving from 10.4 server running on an emac, to a 10.5 setup on a mac pro tower, 2 500gig hard drives. I used to use silverkeeper as an automatic backup utility, I am wondering if it is a good idea to use time machine. I like the idea of being able to go back in time to restore users files, or take the system back when something gets messed up. Any suggestions? I have about 100 users with home directories on server. Clients are mostly running 10.4 with some 10.3. I am not talking about allowing clients to time machine to server, but rather backing up the entire server to the 2nd drive using time machine.

I think this is a controversial topic.
Apple certainly doesn't support it. Apple omits a bunch of key folders depending on what you use your server for. For example, Time Machine does not backup /var/spool which is where the mail store is located. Additionally, Time Machine does not back up logs.
These exclusions can be seen, and commented out, here:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/StdExclusions.pli st
I personally comment out the exclusion of /var/spool and additionally any logs. I also set ServerAdmin to roll my logs so that Time Machine isn't constantly backing up the same log file for more than 7 days.
Of course, you must re-verify that your changes are in place after any software update.
Once I made these changes, I've been very happy with the use of Time Machine to backup my server.
