HT1848 how do i sync iphone to new itunes format

I have latest iTunes but I cannot see how to pick and choose songs or movies to iPhone 5 as it wants to automatically transfer everything and there is not enough space on iPhone. ON the old style iTunes it was far easuer. Help please!

You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar
CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
CTRL+/ to  show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
If you don't like having different coloured text and background for each album in the Albums view use Edit > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc. .
Enabling the sidebar should make manual management of the device more straightforward. That said syncing with selected playlists is easier in the long run as you can manage the content when the device is not connected, and it is easy to restore the selections should you need to restore the device.

  • How to sync Iphone with new itunes library?

I used to sync my iphone with itunes on my macbook.
My macbbok was lost, and i got a new macbook.
Now when i try to sync with the new itunes libaray, it prpompts that it will delete my exisiting data on my phone, This would mean losing all my contacts, and text messages etc.
Is there a way i can sync to a new itunes library without losing my data?
    thanks
    nazmul

Sorry to hear about your macbook.
Others have reported that if you have at least on contact and calendar entry on your new computer when you sync, then it will not erase you iphone, it will simply merge the two. While that makes perfect sense, I have not tried it myself.
As for the texts, I don;t think you can get those back.
Music can only be synced to one library at a time, so the music will be gone. However, in Itunes you can "transfer purchases," at least putting your itunes purchased music on your computer.
It is always a good idea to have a backup. I use an external hard drive. Then you will have a complete backup if anything happens to your computer.
Good luck. I hope it works out.

  • How do I sync iPhone to new Macbook without losing data?

Been searching the internet for several weeks now, and haven't managed to find anything that helps, so here's the deal: I've had an iPhone 4 for a bout a year or so now, and I just got a new Macbook Pro a few weeks ago. I had previously been syncing my iPhone to a shared computer, so obviously I couldn't just set up my new computer using the data of the old one. I wasn't too concerned about this, until I discovered that I couldn't sync my iPhone to the new computer without losing all of the data on it! So I'm trying to figure out how I can save my iPhone's data in such a way that I can restore it upon syncing to the new computer. To clarify, I don't need to save all of the data—I've already gotten my purchases and music transferred over, and I'm in the process of transferring my contacts and notes over, but I have no way of saving the other data. Most of it is superfluous, such as call records or web history—but I do care about game data and iMessage data. So it comes down to this: I need a way to be able to store save files for all my games AND all of the text messages in my iMessage app. I've seen lots of people recommend various file transfer programs, which I assume work for game data, but as far as I've been able to tell from the demos versions, all they'll do for iMessage is export conversations as pdf or text files. I'm not looking to save a hard copy of my text messages, I want to be able to upload them to my iPhone again as text messages (both sent and received). In other words, I'd like my phone to be pretty much exactly the same after syncing it as it is now. At least, as far as the iMessage/game apps are concerned. Maybe I didn't know how to use the file transfer programs, maybe I didn't download the right one, maybe there's another way to do it, I don't know. If anyone can help me solve this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
BTW, My iPhone is running iOS 7.1.2, my Macbook is running OSX 10.9.4. Also, I do still have access to the computer my iPhone is currently synced to, as well as an iPod Touch 4 that's also got most of the data I want on it, if that will help at all.

So, just in case anyone with the same problem happens to run into this post, I managed to find a solution to this problem. There's a $35 program called iBackupbot, which works for both Windows and Macintosh. It's basically an iTunes backup service, except that it functions independently. You can also do partial restores with the program. Anyway, it's a very useful program, and it can sync data from one device synced to one computer to another device synced to another computer (or to a restored device synced to a new computer). If you're willing to shell out $35 for the program, here are the steps to restore your iPhone's data:
Transfer all of your purchases from your old computer to your new computer, including music and videos. This program is good, but it only syncs data files, so music and apps cannot be synced over (that I can tell).
Download and register iBackupbot on your NEW computer (http://www.icopybot.com/buy.htm)
    Plug in your iPhone
When you iPhone appears in iBackupbot, click on its name and then click 'backup now' on the information screen. It will take at least five minutes.Once the backup is complete, you might want to test it out. I'd recommend deleting a few pictures or messages, and then restoring from a backup, to ensure that the backup worked properly.
Quit iBackupbot. (It's a good program, but I've noticed that it's kind of glitchy, and it works best on the first action of each session)
Wipe your iPhone and set it up as a new one. Make sure you link it to the same Apple ID that your new computer is associated with.
Once your iPhone has been set up, sync it to your new computer and re-download all of your music, apps, and other purchases.
Change your iPhone's name (this is to check and make sure that iBackupbot recognizes your iPhone)
Reopen iBackupbot, and click on your iPhone's name when it appears.
Right-click the name and select 'restore from backup.'
Leave the settings alone, and check 'full restore'
This will take quite a while, and your iPhone will probably be glitchy when the restore is finished. Quit iBackupbot again, and then power your iPhone off and then back on.
Check all of your apps (including the system apps) to make sure that all of your desired data has been put back on your iPhone. For me, out of about 70 downloaded apps, 4 did not have any data when I had finished the restore. If this is the case, you can can try another full restore or do a partial restore this time, selecting only the apps that did not have data.
Once you're satisfied that your iPhone has all of the data you want, sync it to you computer to make sure that it will still sync to your new computer (you never know)
Change your iPhone's name to what you want it to be, then reopen iBackupbot.
Do a final backup of your iPhone in iBackupbot.
Sync your iPhone with your new computer one last time, and do a backup of it using iTunes.
    You're done!
I hope this helps. Good luck to anyone who decides to try this method!

  • Transferred my Library to new laptop, but how to associate/sync iPhone with new laptop?

I got a new laptop. The old laptop is still working. I transferred my library using the Home Sharing method and all of my items were moved except my apps. I plugged in my iPhone to the new computer and used "Transfer Purchases from iPhone" option and all of my apps were added to the library. But, now I don't know how to associate the iPhone with the new computer. When I plug in my iPhone to the new computer. It starts to sync. It says steps 1 through 3, spins for 20 seconds and says complete, but nothing was done. I do not get the "this iPhone is associated with another library" message when I plug it in to new computer, perhaps because I've authorized both computers. All I can find in my searches is how to avoid losing all of your data and how to transfer your library, but none has dealt with this exact situation. I am stumped as to how to get iPhone associated with new computer. Can I transfer my backup from the old computer and restore from backup? Other thoughts? Sorry if the answer is somewhere (I'm sure it is), but I have spent two days looking.

Randers4, so I carefully followed the directions (only one that confused me was about adding a fake address/calendar entry, is that for Macs, I'm using a PC?.)  I restored it from the backup and everything looked good. I had hope, the final step says to sync it and when I did, I had the exact same problem. It spun, went quickly through only 3 steps (even though there were 7 sync steps with my old laptop) and nothing changed. It clearly didn't sync.
So, I had an idea that I would back up everything by right clicking in the left pane and forcing a back up on the new computer, and then erasing the entire phone and then restoring from the backup I just made to see if that would make a difference. So, after I tried that and it restored, it was weird. All of my settings were there. Some folders were there, my pictures were there, but all of my apps, folders, music and video was missing and it still wouldn't sync. So, then I had to plug it back into my old laptop and do a restore from there to get that stuff back.
Shouldn't I get a message when I plug the iPhone into the new laptop saying this phone is connected to another computer? I tried "Reset Warning Messages" but it doesn't do anything. At this point, I don't care if I lose some of the stuff from my iPhone (texts, etc)...but I want it to sync to the new computer because my old laptop is on its death bed.
So frustrating, all of my iTunes content is on the new computer, the only piece that is missing is getting it to "talk" to the iPhone. Times like this I wish I wasn't a poor teacher and could afford to get a nice Mac laptop.

  • How do i sync iphone with new computer when old computer is unavailable?

I want my iphone content on itunes on a new computer.  My old computer crashed and is unavailable.

No backup is a big mistake.
If you sync iphone to a blank computer, then the current content will be erased.
The iphone is not a backup device.
The music and pics sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The only exception is itunes purchases:  File>Transfer Purchases
You can e-mail the pics to yourself.  They will never be of the original resolution.
If you enter one unique contact and calendar item, then you should get the option to merge the data when you first sync.

  • Syncing iPhone to new iTunes w/o iTunes library file

My MBP's hard drive died and I got it replaced, so it's good as new - everything was clean, iTunes was empty, etc. I'm filling up the computer again, and I realised that I backed up all my music (the mp3 files/iTunes media folder), but I stupidly forgot to back up the iTunes library file.
So I have my iTunes filled with songs but no play count, playlists etc. All the playlists and information, however, still exist in my iPhone 4, which I haven't synced to my new laptop yet.
I'm preeetty sure because of my ****-up with not saving the library file, there's no way, but I still have to ask: is there any way to sync the song data and playlists from the iPhone back into iTunes? It's not the end of the world if I can't, but I built up all the playcounts, playlists, mixtapes over the past few years and I'm a little sad to lose them.

" This iphone already has content on it but I want to add songs from my old computer."
You cannot do this.  You can have content from one and only one computer at a time on the iphone.
Have you tried restoring the iphone?

  • Had to reinstall windows 7 - Problems syncing iPhone with new iTunes

    Hello everyone!
I've recently had to reinstall windows 7. Now I am having issues syncing my iPhone 4 with my new iTunes. I've look online at several forums and webpages but haven't found a workable solution yet.
My issues are that when I attempt to sync my iPhone with the new iTunes, it tells me that it will erase everything on the phone and replace it with what's in iTunes. Well there's nothing in iTunes so this is a problem.
Now I don't purchase anything through iTunes, except for a few apps, and the only thing I really want out of syncing is to get some class recordings, done by Voice Memos, from my iPhone to my computer. The files are all around ~30 Mb so I can't email them.
Is there anyway to do this?
    Thanks,
    Greg

What gets erased is the iTunes/App store purchases on your phone, replaced with the contents of your iTunes library on your computer - in this case nothing.  Voice memos sync only from phone to computer - they don't get deleted.
To avoid losing your apps, music/media:
    1. Defeat automatic syncing on connection to iTunes:  ITunes preferences > Devices > Prevent .... from syncing automatically
    2. Connect phone to computer with iTunes open
    3. ITunes menu > File > Devices > Transfer Purchases
    4. iTunes menu > File > Devices > Back UP
Now OK to sync voice memos to iTunes.

  • Cannot sync iphone with new itunes, what to do?

I have an iphone 4 synced with an itunes I no longer use. In my new itunes I can't put music on the iphone, what to do?

    Hello there, Jake.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great information in regards to using an older iPhone without a service plan as an iPod:
Using an iPhone without a wireless service plan
Follow these steps to use your iPhone without a wireless service plan:
Insert the SIM card from your new, activated iPhone or one that was previously used to activate the original iPhone.
Connect the iPhone to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.
Once iTunes activates the device, you're free to use the iPhone as if it were an iPod touch.
    Additional Information
Note: It may be necessary to repeat this process after updating or restoring the device.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • How do I sync iPhone to new PC with same Apple ID?

    Hello -
I have a new laptop PC and would like to use it with an iPhone 4 that I have had for a year now.  The phone was originally set up using our iMac, but I now would like it to be principally associated with the PC.  I have set up iTunes on the PC to be "authorized" with the Apple ID that the iPhone was associated with.
If I plug the iPhone in to the new PC, given that it will still be associated with the original Apple ID, will I run in to any problems?
Basically, I want the iPhone to remain as is (apps, songs, photos, etc.) but want to use the new PC for backup, sync, etc. from now on.
    THANKS!
    Doug

Is this true even if the new PC uses the same Apple ID as the original computer?
    Yes.

... Might it be possible to backup the iPhone to icloud, erase the contents of the iPhone using itunes on the new PC, then restore the phone (using the PC) to the backup on icloud?
Yes, but not everything on your iPhone gets backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2584
Surely there's a way to do this...  People are regularly replacing their computers and don't have to start all over with their iPhones.
Smart IT administrators make at least 2 backups to minimize lost.
Best for you now is to copy the whole iTunes library over from the old computer.

  • Pro Mac hard drive tanked - how do I sync iPhone w/ new HD?

My Pro Mac hard drive totally tanked. A new hard drive was installed by the Apple Store tech folks. The old drive is completely toast. The computer runs great, but sans any of my iPhone data.
I am not given the option to back up anything - photos, music, etc - just "erase". It seems odd to not be able to backup the photos.
Is there a program out there that will allow me to do it? Apple repair doods say they can't do it. Perhaps what they really mean is the won't do it, but either way I am left wanting a 3rd-party app that will let me do it myself.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    David,
Unfortunately, your situation is like many on here--lost data due to lack of a backup. The iPhone was not meant to be a backup device, so much of your data is gone.
Not all is lost, however. You can transfer PURCHASED songs from iTunes back to your computer (iTunes>File>Transfer songs from iPod/iPhone). Songs that you ripped or did not purchase from iTunes are gone.
Your photos, though, are gone for good. When you sync your photos from iPhoto or other program, the actual .JPEG files are not transferred. Rather, the photos are "optimized" for the iPhone, meaning a VERY small resolution image is used for display on the iPhone. Even if you could (which you can't) get those teeny images off the iPhone, they'd be useless for any practical use.
This once again highlights the need to always make sure your data is backed up.
    Sorry for your lost data.

  • My old computer got stolen, how can I sync to a new itunes without losing all my contacts, and other stuff?

So my old windows computer that my iphone was sync to got stolen, I bought a new MacBook Pro and it asking me to erase and sync What can I do to keep all my contacts, photos, and other data and sync my iphone then restore all my data? or anything similar you might think that could help. Please any information or tips will be helpful!

The right way is to restore the backup that you kept of your old computer onto your new one. If it is too late for that before you do anything set up a backup process for the new one so when it crashes (note I said "when", not "if") you won't be faced with this problem again.
In lieu of that the apps already mentioned will help you get content off the phone if it was not purchased from iTunes. But it it WAS purchased from iTunes just connect the phone to your new computer, Authorize iTunes on the new computer and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the iTunes file menu.

  • How do I sync Iphone contacts without iTunes

My mom has an iPhone 3gs and I am trying to help her with apps.
I tried to download an app for her, but it says "This iPhone requires the iphone 3.2 update".  I tried to update the iphone on her computer, but her computer is all messed up and I can't install the latest version of itunes.  (she has windows vista, probably a bunch of spyware.  For all intents and purposes the computer isn't usable)
So, I tried to plug her iphone into my computer and it says it cannot read the iphone and it recommended that I restore the iPhone.
I'd like to restore the computer so she can have the ios software update, but I need to know how to backup her contacts and pictures without using iTunes.
I have an android phone and I know I can just sync with google contacts, but she doesn't use email, let alone outlook or mobileme.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As iTunes is still currently listed as a requirement for the iPhone as well as a computer with certain specs, there really isn't an option.  You will have to use iTunes to do any backing up of data.

  • Can't sync iPhone because new iTunes install is not 64 Bit.

The error message is: "this iphone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the itunes installer to remove itunes, then install the 64-bit version of itunes.".
I've browsed a few forum posts, but this is a brand new computer, and I'm shocked that the itunes installation doesn't work.
    steps:
    1. I'm downloading itunes64Setup.exe, and running the installation.
    2. I plug in my iPhone. I get the message. "this iphone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the itunes installer to remove itunes, then install the 64-bit version of itunes.".
How is this possible? it's a brand new installation? It starts by trying to install the files into C:\program files (x86)\itunes, not C:\program files\itunes, but when I run the installation, I see files in both locations.
    How do I fix this?

Yeah, I have the same problem. Supposedly you access devices by clicking on the little iPhone icon - except there is no little icon when my iPhone and/or iPad are connected:
View your iOS device by clicking on the iOS device icon in the upper-left corner.

  • Album art does not match songs after syncing iPhone on new iTunes

    Hi,
I recently updated my iTunes to version 11.1.12.  After doing so, I soon realized that the album art for my songs does not transfer to my iPhone correctly.  On iTunes the album art for each song is matched correctly, but when I sync it to my phone, my phone displays artwork for other songs.  So when I have song 1 and song 2, the album art for song 1 is tagged with song 2 on my iPhone...i'm very frustrated and have tried everything but a hard reset which i'm REALLY hoping I don't have to do.
    HELP HELP HELP!!

I've had this same problem a couple times. First time I didn't have a clue as to cause but fixed it by unsyncing all music (removing it from phone) and resyncing it back on. This latest time the miss matched artwork occurred on albums I bought on my iPad and then sync'd to my computer and then to my iPhone. Artwork is fine on the iPad and computer (iTunes 10.0.1.22 on XP machine). Artwork shows as other albums for only new purchased albums from iPad. I haven't had time to do the unsyncing and resyncing but will do it this soon and report in to verify that it worked (or didn't). I'm hoping the artwork the iTunes couldn't find, and I did from various places on the net, will be there when I resync the music.
