HT1926 Have you gotten the error "a program required for this install could not be run"
Whenever I try to install iTunes on my Windows 7 PC, I get the error" a program required for this install could not be run". Any ideas?
Burwood, that tip says to repair the Apple Software Update module. I went through the process of uninstalling all Apple programs from my computer first, so that's not the problem (and it's not installed, so it can't be repaired).
I tried installing iTunes with the "automatically update" box unchecked as well, to no avail. Any ideas?

I was following the process of unistalling all Apple software and reinstalling iTunes. But I am getting an error that says "a program required for this install could not be run."
Other threads recommend updating the Apple Software Update module, but that was uninstalled. So if it's part of the problem, updating it is not a solution.
Windows 7, 64-bit, SP 1 installed. For what it's worth, at the point the installation fails, Bonjour, Apple Application Support, and Apple Mobile Device Support all show as installed on Control Panel. Apple Software Update has a link on the Start Menu but does NOT show as installed on Control Panel. Is there a way to install this separately from iTunes?

I downloaded itunes but when i try to install i get an error saying "There is a problem with the windows install. A programe needed to install could not be open"
can anyone help?Ok, Below is what worked for me somewhat.
Okay ... try downloading and saving a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe to your PC from the Apple website:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now download a trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.php
Open the iTunesSetup.exe with WinRAR, and try to run the standalone install of Apple Application Support from the AppleApplicationSupport.msi you find in there.
It works now BUT there are still problems. It is not allowing or recognizing my Cd/DVD player and i CANT burn. Looking still for this fix. -
A Program Required for this Install Could Not Be run.
This is the error I receive when trying to install iTunes. I have had permission problems with VISTA in the past, so this may be related. Here is what I have tried
I have completely uninstalled all iTunes related stuff, including using the Installer Cleanup. I initially had trouble deleteing some things because of some permission errors. I managed to fix this by creating a bat file to 'take ownership' of folders. I have been working on this for aaages!!
If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Martin.I have made some progress. I extracted the executable itunes setup into its components and found that the apple software update was giving me the error. I found which folder it wanted to install into, gave myself every permission for that folder, and successfully installed the software update. now when i try and install itunes (though either the executable or iTunes.msi) it goes through the process WAY too fast, and it the end it says installtion complete.
But it hasnt actually installed anything. No desktop icons, the itunes program folder remains empty. Its doing... nothing at all.

I am trying to install the latest version of itunes and when the install begins I get the message "There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required for this install could not be opened. contact your support personnel or product vendor". I ran a troubleshooting diagnostic on my computer and nothing flagged as a problem. I uninstalled iTunes and tried again and now I don't have any way to sync my ipod touch. Please help with any suggestions!!!
Just in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.) -
Hi! I can't upgrade my iTunes 10.3.1.55 on my Windows XP 2002 SP3 to the latest version of iTunes. Got the message: "A problem has occured with the Windows Installer-package. A program needed for this installation could not be run." What to do?
Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time? -
Completely removing iTunes, QT, etc. made no difference. Win7 32 bit SP1, Home Premium. My user account is Administrator; running the installer "as Administrator" (r-click..) also fails. The error text is less than helpful... anyone else seen this one?
First try removing and reinstalling all the Apple software using the following or the link within it that applies to XP.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Then try the other items in:

I have a brand new HP laptop windows 64bit that is having issues installing Itunes 10.6.3. Whenever attempting to install, I get the error message : "THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE. A PROGRAM REQUIRED FOR THIS INSTALL TO COMPLETE COULD NOT BE RUN CONTACT YOUR SUPPORT PERSONNEL OR PACKAGE VENDOR." I thought this was an issue with the new version, and attempted to retrieve/install older versions of Itunes and same issue occurs. I have tried other forums and resolution tips from : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3551 and nothing still. It appears that apple installs bonjour and nothing else. I have tried extracting the itunes package and installing the executables seperately, but everytime the error stil arises. I cannot repair the apple software update as it cannot install from the error mentioned above. Looking through the logs, it shows error : 1721, problem with windows installer package.Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try?
There are so many different error and problems peopl are having.

I'm trying to update iTunes to 10.5.2. I have a Windows 7 64-bit Dell laptop, and when I try to update it, I get the message "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
I went to the troubleshooting page and did all of the steps they listed: uninstalled iTunes, deleted by Temp files, even disabled AVG while I downloaded again and tried to install. I still get the same message. If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it!You must have gone to the old microsoft post.

Did you try to repair Apple Software Update?
That is the important thing to try.
If that doesn't work we would need to try something else. -
