Then call the carrier it is currently locked to. They, and ONLY they can process an unlock request for you.

    Ok, one of my problems is that when I arrive it will take me a few weeks to get a social security number and only t-mobile will give me a sim without a ssn - but edge for a few weeks will be better than no iPhone.

    Yes, you should be able to use a local SIM card from a carrier in Ontario. You should not have to do anything prior to doing so.

    You can't. Apple does not unlock iPhones. Only SoftBank could authorize the official unlocking of your phone, but they won't. Softbank does not offer unlocking.

    I, too, am interested to know if I will be able to use a foreign SIM card when traveling overseas. I spend a significant amount of time outside the US and before buying an iPhone would need to make sure I could use the phone abroad with my other SIM card. The link above points to a FAQ that, alas, does not answer this question. It only mentions that the iPhone can be used abroad via roaming, which means paying AT&T astronomical data and call rates for international.

    You can not use a Sprint iPhone (4S or 5) on any U.S. carrier other than Sprint. If you want to use AT&T, you will need to buy a new phone.

    If the iPhone you buy is truly factory unlocked (available only from Apple Stores in the UK), then it should work with any carrier that has a compatible service.
    Note that you would not be able to get service for a UK-sold iPhone in the UAE, should service be necessary. You'd have to take or ship the iPhone to someone the UK or in another EU country to take or send in for service. Just FYI.

    Factory Unlocked iPhones in the UK are only available from Apple Retail Stores in the UK and also through UK  Apple online but only if you have a credit card registered to a UK address
    I  am sure you are aware Northern Ireland is part of UK unlike Eire a separate country south of the border
    I have no idea what is available there

    If you bought the T-Mobile phone at an Apple retail store at full price, you should be good to go. If you bought the phone from a T-Mobile store, it would be locked.
