From the Users Guide:
Find My iPod
Find My iPod helps you locate your iPod touch using the free Find My iPhone app on
another iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or using a Mac or PC with a web browser signed in to
www.icloud.com or www.me.com. Find My iPod includes:
ÂÂLocate iPod touch on a map: View the approximate location of your iPod touch on a
full-screen map.
ÂÂDisplay a Message or Play a Sound: Lets you compose a message that will appear on your iPod touch screen, or play a sound at full volume for two minutes.
ÂÂRemote Passcode Lock: Lets you remotely lock your iPod touch and create a 4-digit passcode, if you haven’t set one previously.
ÂÂRemote Wipe: Lets you protect your privacy by erasing all media and data on iPod touch, restoring it to factory settings.
Important: Find My iPod must be turned on in either iCloud or MobileMe settings on your iPod touch. Find My iPod can be turned on only in one account.
Turn on Find My iPod using iCloud
Go to Settings > iCloud and turn on Find My iPod.
Turn on Find My iPod using MobileMe
Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, tap your MobileMe account,
then turn on Find My iPod.
Find My iPod uses Wi-Fi to locate your iPod touch. If Wi-Fi is turned off or if your iPod touch isn’t connected to a Wi-Fi network, Find My iPod can’t find it.
See “iCloud” on page 16 or “Setting up mail and other accounts” on page 15.
The only downside is that the wifi has to be on and connected

ddmathias, I want to make sure all services are working correctly on your phone. What GPS services were you using before the update happened? What kind of issues are you having with the services? Do you get any kind of errors? Please keep us posted.

  • Location Services Getting Used A Lot

I recently went into my Location Services setting and noticed the "System Services". It looks like these are the items that use Location Services other than the apps that a user downloads. I turned on the option that allows me to see when the System Services are using Location Services and now I notice that theyre using my location a lot.
I saw the location icon on one time while texting and noticed that it wasn't turning off. I went in to check what was using it and it turned out to be Traffic and Frequent Locations.
Is this normal? Are Location Services actually being used a lot? I'm guessing this is why there's an option whether or not you want to see when the System Services are using your location.
The main reason I'm wondering is because I want to save my battery as much as possible...

Yes; just use the maps app (or google maps). Drop a pin at the starting point, then later you can request directions to that pin. Be sure to switch to walking directions.
But you should also have a backup plan, as you would with any activity in a risky environment.  Like taking sightings on recognizable landmarks or using other survival techniques that you have probably taken classes in. You need to be prepared for a dead battery, dropping the phone, getting it wet, etc.

Can I turn on "Location Services" via the cloud on a lost Ipad?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    Unfortunately not.

My ipod was stolen and I was trying to track it via icloud but they've disabled the location services. Will they still receive my "Find My iPod" messages?

If they disabled services, then they disabled Find My iPhone (if they're smart), so you won't be able to track it and/or wipe it.  Messages won't work either.

  • HT5467 locate a lost or stolen ipod

How can I locate a lost or stolen iPod?

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have to iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.

is there any way apple can track down my lost or stolen ipod touch?

No, but if you have activated Find my Iphone/ipod on it then you could have a small chance of locating it if it is around alot of wifi hot spots.

  • Can I enable location services from my computer???? My Ipod was stolen

My Ipod was stolen and the location services were turned off. Is there any way I can turn them back on from my computer????

If you set up the Find My iPod service (which is different from Location Services) prior to the iPod going missing, then there is a chance that can be tracked, though it depends on a number of factors (the iPod is turned on, connected to a WiFi network, and has not had the Find My iPod service disabled or the iPod been completely restored).
If you did not set up Find My iPod, then there is no way to track it. Contact the police and change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPod (the iTunes Store, for instance).
    Regards.

  • Location Service Being Used by a CLOSED App

I noticed my location services arrow was sticking around for more than a few seconds. This never happens. I wanted to find out what it was so I closed one app at a time and then checked if it went away...
I ended up closing ALL apps, yet the location services were still being used. So this time I went into my system prefs and switched off any app that had recently used my location.
I ended up finding out that Photobucket was the cause of the location services arrow being on for so long.
How is this possible if the app isn't even open at all??

Thanks to you both for the advice! I did use the form you linked to above toekneem.
I'm also preparing a letter to send out today too, as I'm thinking that may oddly be the quickest way to get a resolution to this mess.
It's just frustrating when you're told by the customer support that they'll resolve everything for you and that's the last you hear of it...
I could possibly think of some more appropriate words than "frustrating" . Hope the letter works, please let us know.

  • Location service weirdness - GPS / wifi locations

I currently live in Hong Kong and seem to get some interesting & irritating locations on the Maps application.
I am located at 1 of the 3 locations randomly from my apartment:
    - Tokyo Japan (same apartment I lived in when I was in Tokyo last year)
    - Mutan Pakistan (I assume a neighbor of mine was living in Pakistan with his wireless router and has since moved to HK)
    - Hong Kong (when it works it is quire precise)
Anyone know how to zap the 'bad' data from Skyhook's database?

I have a half-dozen apps that rely on Location Service. I went through several weeks of Intermittant operation before I figured out what's happening.
My router is in an upstairs bedroom. If i'm downstairs, Location Service works maybe 25% of the time althiugh the WiFi data signal is rock solid and my Internet access is flawless. After much weeping and gnashing of teeth, I've confirmed that the only RELIABLE way to make it work is to take the iPad to the room where the router is located. Apparently, the Location Service information is carried on a different (weaker) radio signal than the WiFi Internet data.
There is one thing that I still don't understand. How does the router know where It is? This is a DSL router that's on the subscriber end of a telephone line. It has no GPS circuitry. Worse, it reliably identifies my location incorrectly (although close enough for my purposes). I live at house #7 but Location Service always pinpoints me at house #1 a hundred yards away. Can anyone explain what's happening?
The location service is not carried on any weaker radio signal. It uses the same WiFi as any other transfer to and from your router.
Location services knows where you are from the MAC address of your router and other nearby routers. These MAC addresses are registered in a location services database with their physical location. The database was constructed by WiFi access point locaters which have driven through neighborhoods gathering data.
Location services may work better upstairs because, at that location, your iPad can probably locate other nearby routers which are in the location services database. There may be a know router in house #1 or nearby. Your router itself may not actually be in the database yet.

  • Can an iphone4 be used on a wifi connection like an iPod touch with out phone service? Apps etc?

If I have an iphone 4 and want to use it w out a cellular phone service is that possible with a wifi connection to use apps and the App Store like an iPod touch is used w a wifi service?

Yes it can be used as an iPod without cellular service but using WiFi when needed.  I recommend, however, that you keep your Sim card even after it is no longer active either on the iPhone or stored somewhere, as you would need it to be there if you need to re-activate the iPhone after a restore, should you ever need to do one.
