HT200158 Connecting to older SMB servers in Mavericks

Have anyone got this work? I got Thomson router and FAT32 usb-drive connected into it and OS X is Mavericks.
There is a solution for this problem for OS X Lion (OS X Lion: Connecting to older SMB servers that do not support UNICODE or NT style commands), but I don't got it work in Mavericks.

Found a way for preXP Samba sharing to work.
Download & Install Oracle's Virtual Box.
Setup a Windows XP virtual machine.
(select the appropriate network and sharing settings)
Install Windows XP SP3 onto the virtual machine (you'll need a valid licence key).
And that's it.
I run a virtual box version of Windows XP on Mavericks every time I want to connect to an older Samba share.
It just works.
I have my Mac OS hard drive setup to be shared with the virtual Windows XP machine, so I can drag and drop anything from the Samba share to my Mac hard drive and vice versa, within the emulated windows environment.
I would have loved to run a virtual Snow Leopard instead of Windows XP, but couldn't get it booting correctly, =S. So went with XP instead. Simple, =).

  • Connecting to smb servers

Will Yosemite address the Mavericks problem in connecting to smb servers?

We have this problem in our office too.  Have talked to apple support, microsoft support, two different IT consulting companies, and multiple "techy" friends of the company - all to no avail.  Most seem to say the same thing "there's nothing wrong with your connection" - I suppose because technically it can still connect to the server.  But yes it IS a real PROBLEM! So here's the specifics on our end:
MS Server 2012 - Multi volume/drive server managed by IT consultant, all service packs, patches, yada yada, etc. installed and functioning
To connect (mount) - In finder, use command K to connect to server.  Address: smb://XXX.XXX.X.XX/Volume Name
    Enter credentials for access
    Spinning Wheel
    Eventually volume mounts.
Try to open a folder - folder content empty.
Wait 10 minutes or so, folder content populates.
    Open sub-folder
    folder content empty.
Wait 10 minutes or so, folder content populates.
    and so on.
Also drops connection completely if the screen saver comes on - then you have to start the process over.
This was not how the system behaved previous to Mavericks update.
    Workarounds we have tried:
Use cifs instead of smb - a bit faster but connection is still lost on sleep and folders still take a long time to populate.
Use 3rd Party app like Pathfinder - works much better but really?! I have to pay $40 per user to do something the OS should already be doing at a basic minimum!
Specify port 139 - trying this now - seems a bit faster but too soon to tell.
Bottom line - I really hope this is addressed in Yosemite too - otherwise I'm going to wipe my system and go back to an earlier OS version.  fun.

  • SMB writing Speeds (Mavericks 10.9.5, Server 3.2.2)

    Hello all,
In our network we have a vast majority of Mac based machines, primarily Mt. Lion, but a good handful of Mavericks clients and a few Yosemite clients now as well. We also have a few Windows based machines that freelancers use.
Our server is a 2012 Mac Mini with 2 SSDs and it's connected to the network over a 1 Gb connection. It's running 10.9.5 with server 3.2.2. Also, our server has been optimized following the instructions at http://rolande.wordpress.com/2014/05/17/performance-tuning-the-network-stack-on- mac-os-x-part-2/
We've always used AFP as our file sharing protocol for our Macs and SMB for the PCs, however, with the Mavericks clients (all running 10.9.5) it's my understanding that unless a user uses the "Connect To Server" dialog and connects via the AFP protocol, Mavericks will default to SMB2. Our Mavericks clients have always reported issues when they use the Bonjour listing to connect to the server (because I believe it's defaulting to SMB) so we've forced them to connect via AFP using the "Connect to Server" option in find.. I've also seen numerous posts about how unreliable SMB was when Mavericks first launched.
I finally had some time, so I decided to do a speed test comparison between AFP, SMB, and CIFS (what most of the SMB posts recommend using to connect to SMB shares) protocols. To do this, I used a perl script that I obtained from http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=168289 with a 243MB file. The client I used was my Yosemite test machine, running 10.10 final release, as I wanted to see if the SMB protocol updates in Yosemite cleared things up. In my tests I both wrote to the server and saved a local copy of the file to my desktop from the server using all three protocols. My data is below, but suffice it to say, it shows a drastic speed differential when writing to the Mavericks Server.
When writing to the server, AFP had an average write rate of 10620.8 KB/s (transfer time of 22.66 sec), SMB had an average of 2430.9 KB/s (transfer time of 98.05 sec), and CIFS had an average of 2422.0 KB/s (transfer time of 98.40 sec). The difference between SMB and CIFS was negligible (as one would expect), but the AFP speed was almost 4.5x faster.
When writing the file from the server to my desktop, AFP had an average write rate of 948575.9 KB/s (transfer time of 22.38 sec), SMB had an average of 815190.8 KB/s (transfer time of 23.92 sec), and CIFS had an average of 574321.2 KB/s (transfer time of 29.19 sec). Again the AFP was faster, but barely so, but both SMB and CIFS speeds drastically increased.
My question is, has any one been able to optimize settings on the Server to increase the speed at which it can receive SMB files? Ideally I would love to figure out a way to get transfer speeds to the server over SMB closer to those of AFP or even the transfer from speeds over SMB. If this is possible, I would consider dropping the AFP protocol entirely and moving systems over to SMB, as many of our systems will be upgraded to Yosemite in the coming months.
    Thanks for your thoughts!

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for the reply.
The Time Machine folders shown are from the Server app Storage tab which shows all connected hard drives. I haven't set TM drives up to be shared and hopefully the following screenshots will illustrate the current setup. This setup was created from a clean install of all involved software i.e. drives were erased and setup from scratch and the TM drives were simply connected and TM took control from there.
As you can see from these screenshots, when viewing the permissions through the Server app, there appears to be an extra user when compared to the OS Get Info window.
After leaving TM to its own devices over the weekend, I was greeted with a 'preparing backup' message this morning(Mon 13th October), with a last backup completed on Sat 11th October at 15:19:16. Stopping this backup and starting a manual backup has now resulted in a new, never before experienced error message stating that the backup disks can not be found:
    Console reports:
I must re-iterate, the disk was erased and simply connected and Time Machine did its thing. Now as 'admin' it is clear that the folders created by TM do not have permissions so that I can simply view them in Finder, but does this directly affect TMs ability to access folders it has created itself?
One useful bit of information I seem to have neglected is that the erased TM drive is encrypted, however the password was entered when the drive was connected to the machine and there has been no prompt thereafter.
Please help. Only other comment I can make is that before the update to Mavericks and Server app 3.2.1, none of this was a problem.

  • 10.9.5 update smb servers not working

I just updated to 10.9.5, one of the items was said to improve stability for smb servers, which I use and they have been somewhat unreliable. Immediately after the update I can't access them at all. Can I undo this update? Is there a way to fix this?
    I get the following message:
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.

You should have at least 2 backups or you could end up losing all your data. You can use Time Machine and or a clone.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Since upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.8 I can't connect to a smb share on Windows Server 2003r2

Hi recently i upgraded from Mac OS 10.5.8 to Mac OS 10.6.8 on a 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro 1,1.
Prior to upgrading to 10.6.8 i had a viable connection to a Windows Server 2003r2 which hosts Pre-press client and all out work files as well as client applications. Now I can not connect to the server. I can ping the server. I can connect to another SMB share on different Windows Server 2003r2 that is our secondary server, but i can not connect to the primary. The Client software is associated with data base tracking the data.
This share does not show up in my volumes but I have a Max Host File with the share defined.
Can anyone come up with a solution to this. I have contacted my support for the Server 2003r2 Client software but they don't have a solution beyond clean installing the computer.

    According to:
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3515/p/19351107/19767627.a spx#19767627
It has DVI ports.  This means you are best to use an adapter that supports DVI.  Note there is no audio that carries over DVI.  What you need is a mini-Displayport to DVI adapter, and the proper DVI cable. Since Dell doesn't have the specs, you'll need to tell us if you have pins or holes, and how many are grouped.

  • Why do I get "Unknown user name or bad password" on Windows 7 when trying to connect to an SMB share on my Mac?

Before installing the update to 10.7.3 I could connect to an SMB share on my Mac from Windows 7 but I can't any longer. When I try I get the error "Unknown user name or bad password" on the Windows 7 system.
When I try to connect using the "net use..." command I get the error: "System error 86 has occurred".
Does anyone know how to resolve this? What really confuses me is that it was working fine until I installed the update to 10.7.3.

Check the Wins Tab in the Advanced section of Network in system preferences.
If you don't have the same workgroup name and the correct NetBIOS name showing up in the WINS tab you will get the Bad username or password.
I know I deal with this everyday.
There is something wrong with Lion and it does not automatically fill in those entries in the WINS tab.
What I have to do on every reboot/startup is open System preferences go to Sharing and uncheck File Sharing then recheck it. That will fill in the WINS tab entries.

  • Is Verizon not allowing connections to alternate DNS servers anymore?

Last night I ran a DNS benchmark test, and a notice popped up saying my ISP was intercepting and redirecting all outgoing DNS requests. I've been using OpenDNS for a year now without any problems, then I found out last night I am not connecting to their servers, so I tried Googles servers, no luck there either.
I called tech support (several times) and no one could give me a straight answer to my question: Is Verizon not allowing connections to alternate DNS servers anymore? I was forced to switch back to Verizon servers, not happy about that.
Can someone please answer my question? Thanks.

I'm on FiOS and I've got no issues using OpenDNS.  I have the Quantum router set to use it.  Works fine.
I've manually changed DNS on my computer to google's servers.  No problems with this, either.

Since updating to Firefox 23.0.1, I am unable to connect to our company servers. The error message is "Certificate type not approved for application.", and it gives me no option to create an exception.
In previous versions, Firefox gave the option of creating a security exception, and then everything worked as expected. The new version does not give this option, and hence I cannot connect to our company servers.
I can connect using Explorer, Opera, Chrome, etc., without any problems. Only Firefox refuses to connect.
    Please advice.

The issue is not with SSL or TLS. The issue is with Firefox.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, but this is clearly a bug in Firefox, where the ability to create a security exception has been disabled in this case.
Other browsers, as well earlier versions of Firefox, allow security exceptions to be created, which completely solves the issue.

Wanting to connect an older G4 Powerbook running OS 10.4.11 to a Marantz SR4023 receiver amplifier with only RCA inputs to play iTunes through it on stereo speakers. Can anyone advise how to do this? Not tech savvy at all here, and will be happy with a simple hard wired connection.  The Powerbook is old, and I no longer want to use it for anything but connecting iTunes radio, and my iTunes library to my stereo system.

    Hi,
There were many PowerBook G4 models (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3065) with different ports (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2369).
If necessary, a manual can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#PowerBook%20G4
Generally speaking, the output of a headphone port can often be used for the connection to an amplifier. You would need an appropriate cable (typically, 3.5 mm stereo plug to two RCA plugs). Choose a suitable amplifier input (high level). Do verify the allowed amplifier input voltage levels and the impedance before you connect.
