HT201064 Fresh Mavericks install, iPhoto installed from DVD - won't update via the App Store

Hi all
I did a fresh install of Mavericks, then installed a few apps from the App store.
I then remembered iPhoto etc. that I have from the original install discs (2012 MBP)...but whilst iPhoto says an update is available (9.5.1), and launches the App store it won't show as an update via the App store.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Sadly you're mistaken. A 2012 MacBook Pro has no install DVDs. Apple stopped issuing install disks with new Macs soon after the permanent advent of the Mac App Store with OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Additionally, the version of the iLife apps; iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand that last came on install disks are not the Mac App Store (MAS) versions and are not compatible with being updated through the MAS.
The apps from that old disk that you have from another Mac may be updatable however, using the Software Update facility in the Apple menu.

  • If I download the latest OSX update via the App Store, can I choose to do a fresh install instead of an update?

That's basically the question - since I get a RAM error upon trying to freshly install the OS on my MBP (disc or SD card), I find this to be the last remedy. I already tried switching the RAM. I'd like to sell my device, so I wanna "reset" it. Can I choose to freshly install OSX when downloading the Mountain Lion update?

That is not a RAM issue. You're trying to boot from a Mac OS X version too old for the computer.

Try dragging a photo to the desk top, highlight it and press COMMAND I this will open the info window, in the drop down menu "open with" select either preview, or other, then select iPhoto. Preview is the default.
    Then click "Change All"

    Try re-indexing Spotlight.

If worse comes to worse, and it is in your Purchases tab, delete 1.0.3 and download it again. You might need to do Spotlight again.

  • How do I install new themes for keynote purchased throught the app store?

I have downloaded some Keynote themes fron a site but I have no way (that I can see) to install them. I've done extensive googling and I always find instructions that say that I have to add the downloaded themes (.kth files) into the ~/Library/Application Support/Keynote/Themes folder. However, I have no such directory.
I purchased Keynote via the App Store. Could this be the reason why I don't have this directory on my hard disk? How does one install new themes then?
    Thank you.
While I am at it and since there must be a lot of Keynote experts around, I'll ask another question about a problem that is driving me crazy. I'm one of those thousands of new converts and I have a lot of old PowerPoint files that took me a lot of time to create. I'm trying to import them into Keynote but some of them are giving me trouble. The problem comes when I try to change the theme (I just want to change the background). When I have complex slides involving many objects, if I change the theme all these objects abandon their original positions and everything becomes garbled. I think this has to do with the aspect ratio of the slides but I haven't found any way of fixing it. No matter what size I choose in the Theme Chooser, the result is the same.
I would really appreciate any help you people can offer with any of these problems. Thanks in advance.

i insalled snow leopard 10.6.8 and all updates but the app store will not allow me to purchase mountain lion.

Is your iMac from mid-2007 or newer?  If not, it's too old to support Mountain Lion.
If so, do you meet all the requirements below for Mountain Lion?

  • I can not download iPhoto 9.0 as it is unavailable in the app store.  I need it before I can download iPhoto 9.0.1

I am currently running OS X Yosemite on my MAC.  I cannot download iPhoto 9.0 as it is unavailable in the app store.  I need it before I can download iPhoto 9.0.1

    iPhoto 8.1.2.
    OS X 10.10.2 is correct.
    Your only options are to:
    1 - upgrade to 10.10.3 and Photos 1.0
    or
2 - purchase a copy of the iLife 11 disk from an online retailer like Amazon.com , install iPhoto 9.0 and upgrade it to 9.4.3 via these updaters:
    update to iPhoto 9.2.1
    update to iPhoto 9.3
    update to iPhoto 9.3.2
    update to iPhoto 9.4
    and finally to iPhoto 9.4.3
From there you may be able to get iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store but not sure.

  • There are too many questions "like" mine, so here it is: I updated from Mountain Lion to Yosemite, I can't open iphoto 9.1.5, I am directed to the app store, I "accept" iphoto upgrade and enter my credentials, but no update occurs. :-(

Attempting iPhoto upgrade from 9.1.5 to 9.5.

How many questions like yours should there be? What exactly do you expect the volenteers here to do about what you personally consider "too many questions"?
To move to iphoto 9.6 (required for Yosemite) You must log in to the App store  using the Apple ID that was used to set up the compter (or purchase the application if it was purchased later), backup your iPhoto library and then download and install iPhoto 9.6 from the App store
If that is not working then you must contact App store suport - link is on the right of the App store window

SO I guess I'm doing this right haha. But I have a late 2006 IMac. It's running Snow Leopard. I want to know if I can update it to Mountian Lion via the appstore? I was thinking no, because it is a 2006 computer. But I read some articles that said I could. I just want your thought on this. Thanks!

No, it cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion, but it may be updated to Lion.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.

  • IPhoto 9.4.3 no longer available in the App Store?

My wife has an older MacBook running 10.7.5. It is still running great, but it is too old to update to 10.9 Mavericks. I would like to buy the newest possible version of iPhoto that will run on 10.7.5. I believe this is iPhoto 9.4.3. But the only iPhoto available in the App Store is 9.5, which requires Mavericks.
I can purchase an old version of iLife '11 on Amazon for $40, (http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MC623Z-A-iLife-VERSION/dp/B003XKRZES), but I am concerned about purchasing an old product through a third-party reseller. Plus I don't need iMovie or GarageBand and would rather pay $14.99 for iPhoto alone.
Additionally, I have a newer MacBook Pro also running 10.7.5 and iLife '11 (iPhoto 9.4.3). My plan is to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
I want to store my iPhoto library on an external hard drive so that both my wife and I can access it. I will connect the external drive to my MacBook Pro when I want to add photos or do editing. My wife will connect it to her MacBook when she wants to add photos or do editing. So even though I can upgrade my MacBook Pro to 10.9 and 9.5, I am holding off for now. I am not sure if an iPhoto 9.5 library is compatible with iPhoto 9.4.3? So to be safe, I want both machines running 9.4.3.
Question #1 - What is the best way to get iPhoto 9.4.3 on a MacBook that cannot run Mavericks 10.9 or iPhoto 9.5?
Question #2 - Is an iPhoto 9.5 library backward compatible for a machine running 9.4.3?

Yes, iPhoto 9.4.3 will work with Mavericks. As a precaution I keep a copy of iPhoto in another folder so that it won't get overwritten by accident.  The only official thing I can show you is this from my computer showing those apps that work and those that don't:
This is a screenshot of all of my test libraries which work with Mavericks:
The only version of iPhoto that doesn't work with Mavericks is iPhoto 9.3.2 (probably all 9.3 versions).  Why, that's a mystery. I have test libraries for all of the versions above.  iPhoto 8 and earlier do take a while to load their libraries as there's some old MobileMe stuff in them that slows them down.
