HT201065 Selling MBP with Mavericks - legal issues?

Any legal issues with selling my MacBook Pro with a clean install of Mavericks? As a preliminary to selling I have followed Apple's instructions by securely erasing my hard drive etc. I then downloaded a clean install of Mavericks. I was required to enter my Apple ID to download it.  Does this mean that the copy of Mavericks will be attached to my Apple ID? Am I allowed to sell it on as is? Or am I supposed to leave it to the purchaser to download Mavericks using their own Apple ID?

Any and all software sold and distributed solely through the Mac App Store cannot be sold or transferred at all, unless it original came pre-installed on the machine.
The license is quite explicit about that - https://www.apple.com/legal/
section 3 covers transfers (this is from the link for OS X - Mavericks)
3. Transfer.
A. If you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to  the Apple Software (in its original form as provided by Apple) to another party, provided that: the Apple Software is transferred together with your Apple-branded hardware; (ii) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, printed materials and this License; (iii) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iv) the party receiving the Apple Software accepts the terms and conditions of this License. For purposes of this License, if Apple provides an update (e.g., version 10.9 to 10.9.1) to the Apple Software, the update is considered part of the Apple Software and may not be transferred separately from the pre-update version of the Apple
Software.
B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware before doing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple  operating system software that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original Apple OS”) and permanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware, provided that: the transfer must include all of the Original Apple OS, including all its component parts, printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the party receiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of the Original Apple OS license.

I'm running out of hd space on my MBP with Mavericks OS. How do I move my Photoshop 5 app off the computer for more space, and store the PS5 app on DVD or on my backup hd for a future reinstall on my next Mac with larger hd?
    Thanks

    slaglejrp,
perhaps it would be less expensive to just install a new disk with a larger capacity on your current MacBook Pro, rather than plan on buying a new Mac with a larger disk? Once your current disk has been cloned to the new disk, and the new disk has been installed into your MacBook Pro, that would allow you to keep Photoshop 5 on your current MacBook Pro.

  • External ITWorks Numpad won't work on MBP with Mavericks

    Hello,
I'd be really thankful if anyone knows the solution to this one:
I have a new MBP with Mavericks 10.9.2, for working in Sibelius (notation software) I always used an external
numeric pad, an I.T. Works model (KP-6910W) via USB.
It perfectly worked with my old MBP (OS 10.5.something) but isn't even recognised by my new computer.
Choices in "change keyboardtype" in the system preferences menu only contain full keyboards by either japanese, european or
    american standards, but no numpads...
    Thanks!
    Philipp

    Philipp,
I use KeyRemap4MacBook as a numeric keypad substitute. On a US English keyboard layout, pressing the fn key provides the following “built-in” numeric keypad equivalents:
    7890-   to   789/=
    uiop    to   456*
    jkl;    to   123-
    m,./    to   0,.+

  • On a MBP with Mavericks how do I get the Save As dialog box to open at the same size and place at which it was last closed and used to happen before Mavericks?

Before I upgraded my MBP to Mavericks, the Save As dialog box would reopen at the same size and position as it was when last closed.  Now with Mavericks it always opens in the same position at a very small size.  Is there a way to make it reopen at the last place and size at which it was closed?

I have resolved the issues presented without having to find and uninstall the Macromedia Flash Player 8.0 in order to get "Adobe Flash Player 10" playback of .swf files on my computer. When I begin this task, I expected to download an "Adobe Flash Player 10" as a player program download instead of the Internet Explorer and Firefox plugin that it appears to be.
This is what I did and what I believe I have:
    1. I setup Internet Explorer 6 as my default browser and then used the following site to download Adobe Flash Player 10
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
    2. As I had done before (and also suggested in another thread here), I went to Tools/Manage Add Ons and found Shockwave Flash Object, highlighted it, and clicked on Update Active X. Next, what I did not do before, I restarted the computer immediately after that.
    3. Next, I set Mozilla Firefox as my default browser and then used the above site to download Adobe Flash Player 10 again.
    4. With Firefox, the critical step included Firefox Tools/Options/Content with File Types (Configure how Firefox handles certain types of files) and the Manage Tab there. SWF Shockware Flash Object/Change Action/and dotting "use this plugin" - Shockwave Flash, followed by a computer restart got the job done.
Now, if I want playback of a .swf file, I can
    a. Open With Internet Explorer (assumed with the Adobe Flash 10 "plugin")
    b. Open With Mozilla Firefox (assumed with the Adobe Flash 10 "plugin")
    c. Open With Macromedia Flash Player 8.0
I am satisfied with those results for my use. Any additional comments on the player vs plugin aspect of the matter would be interesting and helpful.

  • Can't Boot From Mountain Lion Startup Drive on MBP with Mavericks Installed

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to boot up my late 2013 15" MBP (shipped with Mavericks) using an external startup disk running Mountain Lion. I really need to use the FCP iChat Theater feature, as I need to do some long distance editing. The startup disk works just fine, I checked it on another computer, but when I restart my Mavericks mac and choose it as the boot drive, I just get a grey screen with the universal "no"symbol (circle with a slash through it).
Any ideas on how to get around this issue?
    Thanks!

Starting up from a system version older than the original one is not supported and usually not possible.

  • Got a new MBP with Mavericks but still prompting to download Mavericks in App Store

I'm not sure if I have to download and install Mavericks again on this machine but this is a brand new late october MBP with OS X 10.9

You don't need to download OS X Mavericks because you are already using it. The only purpose to download OS X Mavericks would be to create a USB drive with the Mavericks installer in case you want to reinstall Mavericks in the future

  • Selling a 2012 MBP with ML - license issues?

I bought my Macbook Pro (non-retina) in July 2012, the day that Mountain Lion was released, so although my machine was shipped with Lion, it was eligible for the free upgrade to ML, which has been my only OS.
I am not getting clear information about how to go about reformatting and reinstalling ML for resale to a third party.  My understanding is that using the internet restore function from Apple, Lion is no longer available, so it will force a Mountain Lion installation.  But this license will be mine, associated with my Apple ID.
Do I stop the reinstall process when I'm prompted for the Apple ID, and make the buyer take it from there?  Or is that too early in the process?
I really just need to know what to tell the buyer when I sell the MBP, to let them get a license for ML that they can use for their own recovery services etc. later on. even if it means I take $20 off the price to cover their copy of ML later.

do a internet recovery install since Mountian Lion is now registered to your Apple ID.
when you do a internet recovery install - it will install the original os it shipped with, which is Lion.
turn your computer on while holding down the command + options + r keys and once you see the spinning globe - then let the install continue.
let the buyer purchase his own legal copy of Mountain LIon - unless he already has it then leave it the way it is.

  • Selling MBP w/ Mavericks. No install disk.

Hi: I'm selling my daughter's mid-2012 MBP, 15-inch. I want to uninstall everything she put on here. If this machine came with an install disk, she doesn't have it. So my question is how can I clean off the hard drive and reinstall the OS X operation system? Do I just erase everything, then download the latest Mavericks version from Apple?
    Thanks for your help.

Securely delete all files which contain sensitive data, restart it with the Option, Command, and R keys held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the main partition, and install a fresh OS.

  • MBP 2009 Mavericks battery issues

So I've 'upgraded' to Mavericks on my MBP 2009 and since im eating 1% battery every minute with anything and everything flagging as using too much battery.
I would like to keep Mavericks but I have tried the things ive found which were supposed to fix this issue like SMC reset and NVRAM reset. Any other ideas before i give up and go back to Leopard, which whilst not amazing for battery, would normally serve me 4hours ish, im currently working on about a hour and half max! killing my laptop use now!
    Thanks

The information you paste from System Profiler indicates a capacity of way above 2%, pddrome. 4831mAh is more like 86% of original capacity (around 5500-5600 mAH) for a 15" MBP 3.1. It doesn't look like a "failed" battery at all, but one that's pretty normal after 100 cycles or so.
I'd be wondering whether something else is going on here. Maybe a problem with your system management system or the like that is giving you "false" readings, or perhaps even dirty battery contacts or some such giving erratic results.
Just by the way, a Li polymer battery left unused will deteriorate over time anyway. You would probably be better off swapping the two batteries every few days to maximise their lifespan, rather than using one heavily and one very intermittently.
But the SP info you provide doesn't suggest that your battery is dying. I'd be wondering about other issues with charging or system management generally.
EDIT - I think I can see where your mistake is. You are comparing the actual amperage figure (second bottom in the column) with the total present capacity, rather than the total present capacity with the original capacity.
Not surprising it jumps around if this is the case! The amperage figure depends totally on the current rate of power usage at the time when you run system profiler. It doesn't tell you anything about battery condition. Fire up a processor or disk intensive program and it will go screaming up if you run SP again. Shut everything down apart from SP and it will drop, etc etc.
Sounds to me that with your new order you will soon probably have 4 good batteries to keep on swapping around!
    Cheers

  • 2013 MBP with Mavericks: Move music from 2007 MBP?

Want to transfer my music from a MBP from 2007. Problem of incompatible ports, apart from USB.
Any ideas apart from WiFi, which will take hours, or buying more cables? Could I transfer the music from a time machine disk with USB?
    Thanks for any help.

If you have your /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder backed up with Time Machine, then you can restore the folder to the new computer using the Time Machine application.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine. I believe you want Item 17.

  • How to restore MBP with dual drives from time machine

Hi one and all. Hoping I can get some help here. My trusty mid 2010 i5 MBP's hdd died on me the other day, which isn't really the problem, as I've got two time machine back-ups. The issue is that in my wisdom I decided to swap out my old (and nearly full) 500 GB HDD with a 240 GB SSD (Crucial M500). I then loaded OSX 10.6.3 via the dvd that came with my MBP, formatting the SSD in the process. Then promptly removed the optical drive for a Samsung 1TB drive, formatted it and started transferring all my data over via the migration assistant.
I put everything other than photos, movies and some documents on the SSD, with the space hungry images, movies and docs going on the HDD. Now I'm assuming that because my boot drive (the SSD) is smaller than the time machine back-up (about 480 GB), this was the only way to do it? Doesn't really sound like I've got much of a problem then does it? Well, I then attempted to update the OS to OS X 10.6.8 so I could update again to mavericks. I installed the update to 10.6.8 and now I'm stuck in a perpetual log-in loop. The password is correct, it starts to log-in, then blue screen and back to log-in... repeat to fade or until you feel like giving your mac a Basil Faulty style thrashing, which ever comes first.
I've ordered a thumb drive with Lion 10.7 on so that I can attempt to try again (really can't be bothered to re-install the optical drive), but I was hoping someone may have experienced this kind of issue before and have some kind words of wisdom. No worries if not, I'll just go outside and try to find a decent branch to thrash my previously loved mac with
    Cheers
    Rich

Right well it appears I have further complicated things for myself. Whilst I was waiting to sort out my MBP, I restored from time machine to my mac mini so that I had a machine to work from. Then I fixed my MBP by installing new drives (SSD and HDD where the optical drive used to be), and using migration assitant to copy everything over from time machine. So now I technically have two machines the same.
Only problem is when I try to update the MBP with Mavericks it tells me it cannot install on this machine. Is this because I did restored the same original mac to two new machines?

  • CS5 compatibility with mavericks

Is PS CS5 12.0 compatable with Mavericks  having issues  one is I can not open two or more photos at the same time opening one closes the previous open one  any help? thanks

Hello, normally, there is no problem, according to: http://blogs.adobe.com/vikrant/2013/10/creative-cloud-creative-suite-6-and-mavericks-10-9/ BUT... some users reported issues with menus when using a Wacom tablet (look in the forum) and make sure that your third party plug-ins work ok in Mavericks.

  • Server connections are lost after sleep mode with Mavericks.

Ever since I "upgraded" to Mavericks, when I "wake" my iMac after putting it in Sleep mode, the network connections have disconnected and I have to re-connect all of them (6) every day. This never happened with Mountain Lion or any other previous version of OS X. Is there a fix for this?

I've also noticed this problem. Brand new MBP with Mavericks, goes to sleep, on wakeup all my network drives are disconnected, as is Outlook 2011. None of them recover gracefully - I have to manually reconnect. Aggravating..
