HT201077 Can't join shared photo stream

I have Windows 7 and I got an e-mail with a link to join a shared photo stream.
I've asked the person if he can just e-mail me the pictures, but he says he doesn't know how, so it looks like I have to deal with all this stuff. So...
I created an apple ID. I installed iCloud Control Panel 2.1. I checked the box in iCloud CP next to Photo Stream (and also both boxes in the Photo Stream options). I signed in to iCloud with my Apple ID. I've closed things and restarted my computer and tried eveything else I can think of, but still when I click on the "Join this Photo Stream" link in the e-mail I just get taken to the page that tells me how to set things up.
So what am I doing wrong? Do I need to have iTunes or some specific photo viewer installed or something too? I don't see anywhere that it says I do, but I can't get it working the way it is.

I was never able to resolve this problem and like abridge1, there was no shared photo streams in Windows Explorer, just My Photo Stream.
I've since uninstalled iCloud Control Panel, so I can't test the theory out, but I wonder if the problem was that the invitiation to join the photo stream was sent before I had created an Apple ID and/or installed iCloud Control Panel. Maybe if the invitation was sent again it would have worked.
Instead I asked the person who made the photo stream to recreate it but this time check the box that gives you a URL so that anyone can access the pictures without any special software. Much easier.

• TS4526 Can't access shared photo stream videos on my Apple TV, ?

I have an Apple TV that is a couple of years old and can't access shared Photo Stream videos. Is this something that only the third generation Apple TV can do? I don't have any problem using an iPad 3, iPhone 5 or 5S to access these videos so I suspect it is a limitation with the older Apple TV. My cousin has a newer Apple TV and can view these videos but I can't see them.

Have your husband check to see if he can view those 9 photos in full view or the edit mode.

• I can not receive shared photo stream notifications

I can not receive shared photo stream notifications - not getting iCloud notifications when someone is trying to share photo stream?

Hello hayley204,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are not being prompted for invites to a Shared Photo Stream.  Please see the following information:
I opted out of receiving iCloud Photo Sharing invitations, but now I'd like to subscribe to shared photo streams.
If you still have an email invitation, open it and click “Don't Send Me Photo Stream Emails” at the bottom of the message. A browser window will open and show that you're no longer receiving photo stream invitations. Click “Undo this change.”
If you no longer have an invitation, contact Apple Support and ask to opt back in to receiving photo stream invitations. After you opt in, you won't receive previous invitations automatically, but you can contact the owner of a shared stream and ask to be invited again.

• Can't join others photo streams

My family is sending me invites to their photo streams. Okay, I'd like to be able to see their photos. I don't own an iDevice, but I do have a Macbook running 10.7.5; should be fine. So I turn on iCloud, discover I need to update iPhoto (not in system update, hrm, try downloading manually from the website, installer doesn't work, turns out I need to use the App Store, what?), update iPhoto, discover that photo streams aren't available in iCloud, install some system updates, now they show up, okay, so I should be good to go right? But when I click the "join this photo stream" button in the invite email I still get sent to a "how to set up iCloud" page!
And now, mysteriously, the "how to set up" page is claiming I need OSX 10.8! What the heck? It's moving the goalposts on me! Before I did those system updates it said that 10.7.4 would be sufficient!
I've spent over an hour troubleshooting and installing updates for things that I really don't need, just so I can see some photos that really don't require all this faffing about. I get that photostreams are automagic and amazing if you have an iPhone or iPad but the user experience here on a Macbook is complete tripe.
TL;DR if there's a way to get the things working on my current computer then great, but I don't see it. And I'm not about to give Apple more money for an OS upgrade (even if it's only $20 or whatever 10.8 costs) when 10.7 has been more than adequate for every other use case I've put it to. This just smacks of artificial limitations to get people to pay for upgrades.

Shared Photo Streams require iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4, and OS X v 10.8.2 or later.
See http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/ for complete instructions
If you do not want the new enhanced capabilities of the newer software there is no need to upgrade - if you do want the new, enhanceed capabilities then you will have to upgrade - exactly like any other product you purchase - it has certain capabilities and as new features are released in new versions you have to purchase the newer versions to have the new capabilities

• Need help joining shared photo stream

I got invited to a shared photo stream from an Apple user on my PC.  I am currently signed into an active iCloud account, but everytime I click on the invitation link, it takes me to a page that gives directions on how to join a shared photo stream, and shows no indication of me actually joining the photo stream.  I've followed every step, and I just want to view the pictures on the photo stream on my PC.

Then the sender will either have to turn on the public website option and resend an invitation to you with the url to view the photos on the web, or they will need to resend the invitation to an address associated with an iCloud ID (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmb700ea29).

• Can't see shared photo streams in Aperture

I have created a number of photo streams and shared them with my wife.
My wife has accepted the streams and can see them on her iPhone.
She uses Aperture on the Mac but cannot see the streams there.
She has the three checkboxes on the photo streams tab checked, and her own photo stream is visible.
Under the web section in the Aperture library browser, photo stream doesn't appear - her Facebook entry shows up, but not photo stream.
Photo stream shows in the recent section of the library browser, but that is just the photos in my wife's own photo stream, you don't see the individual streams that I can see under photo stream under web in my Aperture view.
My wife has photo stream checked in settings -> iCloud on her Mac.
Any suggestions?

I attach four screenshots Yann - one is the project hierarchy - where you'll see PhotoStream appearing in Recent items, but not under the Web section (where you do see Facebook) and the other the preferences pane for PhotoStream in Aperture showing all three boxes checked.
Attachments one and two are from my wife's computer - where she's not seeing shared PhotoStreams.
Attachments three and four are from my computer - we I do see them.
What I notice when I compare these side by side is that there is a difference in the setting panel for photo stream between the two.  Mine has a fourth option for shared photo streams - my wife's doesn't.
Yet both s/w versions for Aperture are 3.4.5.  There is a difference in what is listed in the Aperture version after the version number, but both computers are fully up to date with no further updates available.  (Final two images first my wife's then my s/w version)
Is your view/settings any different?

The most recent iPhoto is 9.4.2, so open Apple menu > Software Update and install the most recent iPhoto. Also, check if you have another iPhoto copy of an older version on your Mac

• HT204053 how can I join an photo stream on a windows 7 pc. I have an apple id.

I have been invited to join a photo stream by a friend who only lives in the apple ecosystem. I have a Windows 7 machine and no apple devices. I do have an Apple ID and have installed the WIndows iCloud application. However, when I try to log into iCloud or join the photo stream, I get an error message saying that the Apple ID is valid but not for iCloud.

Hello tw_mama,
I was looking into the issue you are experiencing and found an article that may shed some light on the subject. It's called iCloud: Account troubleshooting found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3988
This section in particluar:
I get an "Unsupported Apple ID" error when I try to sign in to iCloud from my iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Depending on how you created your Apple ID, you may not be able to create an iCloud account with your current Apple ID. If your Apple ID works in the iTunes Store, App Store, Game Center, FaceTime, or with other Apple Services, your Apple ID should work for iCloud. Also, if you created your Apple ID while you applied for a job at jobs.apple.com, your Apple ID should work for iCloud. If you cannot use your Apple ID with any Apple Services, it might not be compatible with iCloud. Contact iCloud Support for assistance.
All the best,
Sterling

• Can't share photos using shared Photo Stream with iCloud Control Panel for Windows

BACKSTORY: My friend took pictures of my family. I want to see the pictures he took. We live about 2.5 hours apart by car. Gas prices are too high for me to just drive down with an external hard drive to get the pictures and I might as well throw my money out the window if I were to ship him a hard drive and he ship it back. SO. I ask him if he would share photos with me and he quickly agreed. He added me to a Photo Stream  he has. ok cool. I recieve the invitation email just fine but this is the error I get when I click on the link:
ERROR MESSAGE:
Photo Stream
Follow these steps to join a shared photo stream
1.Make sure you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 6 or a Mac running OS X 10.8.2 withiPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later installed.
2. Sign in to iCloud on your devices.
3. Open the invitation email on an updated device and tap the Join this Photo Stream button.
WHAT I NEED:
How can I view shared photo streams using iCloud Windows control panel 2.1.2.0? How can I work around this error message? I don't own any of these products that apple wants me to own in order to view these photos! I don't have the cash to go out and purchase them. What can I do to get "my" photos? Do I have to be signed into my friends apple id to see the shared photos?
What I've tried:
I already have the icloud control panel installed and updated to the latest version.
I'm signed into iCloud on the control panel. (no apple id password issues)
I have photo stream checked.
I have my photo stream checked
I have shared photo stream checked.
I have tried copying and pasting the link into the address bars of Safari for Windows, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer,  and Firefox respectively and pressing enter to load. all present the same error message.
I visited iCloud.com to see if there was anywhere to access the shared photo stream there... No option exisits
Checked my photo stream folder in windows explorer. it's completely empty. I haven't put any of my own photos there so nothings missing per se... I just can't see my friends shared photos.
MY SET UP:
Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
4gb of RAM
iCloud control panel version 2.1.2.0
I don't own any version of Outlook, (if that matters. I doubt that it matters at all in this case.)
I don't have any iOS Devices or a mac capable of 10.8. My MacBook is stuck at 10.6.8. It's a late mid 2008 just before the aluminum unibody computers came out. If I had only waited another month... sigh. Murphy's Law is alive and well.
any sugestions, especially correct answers, are welcome. please help me figure this out. Thanks in advance.
Desert_dweller5

Hello desert_dweller5,
It sounds like you art trying to access a Shared Photo Stream, but you do not have one of the devices to enable your Apple ID as an iCloud account.  The following article provides information on how Shared Photo Streams work:
iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486
The article states that for privately Shared Photo Streams to work, the recipient will not only have to have an Apple ID, but it will have to be an iCloud account:
Friends and family with iCloud accounts can view your photos in the Photos app on any device using iOS 6 or later; on a Mac in iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later; on a Windows PC with Windows Vista or later and iCloud Control Panel 2.0 or later installed; or on a second generation or later Apple TV with software version 5.1 or later installed. They can also view your photos on the web if you enable Public Website in the settings or options for your Shared Photo Stream.
Since you do not have an iCloud account and just and Apple ID, your friend can share the photo stream as a public website so that you can view it, as stated in the same article:
Can I share with people who don't have an iCloud account?
Yes. If you enable Public Website in the settings or options for your shared photo stream your photos will be published to a website that anyone can view in an up-to-date web browser.
To be able to change an Apple ID to an iCloud account, you would need an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later or a Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.4 or later as stated in the following article:
Creating an iCloud account: Frequently Asked Questions

• HT201077 I changed my apple id and now I don't have access to my shared photo streams.

I thought they were gone, but I got an Apple TV for Christmas and can see the shared photo streams on there, along with all of the pictures.  How can I get the shared streams back on my phone and iPad?  I'm signed in with the same (new) apple id on the tv, iPhone, and iPad.  I want to add pictures to the stream and not lose all the comments already placed and have to re-invite people.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Photostream in the cloud only keeps photos from the last 30 days (subject to a 1,000 photo limit). When photostream syncs the photos to your device they will stay there until deleted, which means you may well have more photos in your photostream album on your device than there are in photostream in the cloud.
The consequence of this is that if you turn photostream off and on again on your device (or enable it for the first time), it will only be populated with photos from the last 30 days, which may not be all the photos that were previously in the photostream album on that device.
