What happens when you try to redeem it, are you getting any error messages ?     Are you able to take it back to the store that you bought it from and ask them to activate it properly ?     If you just want to redeem the card then you shouldn't need to scan it in nor contact Support : redeeming a card.
    If you are having a problem with the code and need to contact Support about it then if you have a computer or a mobile phone with a camera on it then you can take a picture with that - or you can use a digial camera and import it to your computer so that you can attach it.

    It is a valid and important problem but it would seem Apple are deciding to ignore it.  I can understand them asking to see a receipt but as you have said, when buying them as gifts for people it is highly unlikely that you will keep said receipt.  You automatically expect the card to work!! 
    Kick up a fuss with your local Consumer Protection organisation.  Get in touch with your local press and explain the problem to them.

    When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive.  It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas?  I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.

    By 'won't work' you mean ? If you are getting an error message then what does it say ?
    For a card to have a chance of being accepted it needs to be registered to exactly the same name and address (including format and spacing etc) that you have on your iTunes account, and have been issued by a bank in the country where you and your iTunes account are.
