Once a card has been redeemed then its amount will be on your account, the card itself is then effectively empty. My account's balance shows at the top left of the store's page on my computer's iTunes, and by logging in to view my account on it (via the Store > View Account menu option). On my iPad it shows at the bottom of, for example, the Featured tab in the App Store app under my account id (or you can view your account by tapping on your account in Settings > iTunes & App Stores and selecting 'view account' and it should show on the screen that you are taken to).

How can I check the balance for an itunes card that has already been redeemed. When I was cleaning my bedroom, I found an old itunes card is redeemed but I want to know if it has a balance. Whenever I put in the code on the itunes on my computer and my iphone, a message comes up that says "The gift certificate or prepaid code you entered has already been redeemed." Oh and I also got a new computer so the balance isn't on my itunes already. What can I do to find out the balance. Thanks!

If your account's balance covers the purchase price then your card won't be charged, if it doesn't cover the entire amount then any remainder will be charged to the credit card on your account.

You can't 'top up' your balance from your bank account, you can either add to your balance by redeeming iTunes cards, or use a credit card on your account

Have you checked the account's purchase history to see if anything could have used up the balance : See your purchase history in the iTunes Store - Apple Support ?
If there aren't any purchases then try logging out and back into the account (e.g. on your iPad tap on your id in Settings > Stores and then log back in) and see if a balance then shows on it. Have you redeemed your iTunes card to an account associated with an Apple ID?
Once you have your iPad associated with an Apple ID AND you have an account with a credit card associated with the same Apple ID AND you have some 'store credit' (from redeeming your iTunes card) then purchases use the store credit before they charge the credit card, so you should be ok!
Personally, I use 'store credit' as a way to monitor whether or not there have been any 'unauthorised' purchases because as soon as the store credit is zero, the security code from the credit card is needed for further purchases! It does mean that I have sometimes to top up store credit before making a purchase, but 'better safe than sorry'!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'add an app' (?). You can buy/download apps on your iPad via the App Store app - tap on a app's price to buy it, and it should download onto your iPad's homescreen. You should also be able to redownload apps that you've purchased in the past (as long as they are still in your country's store) via the Purhcased tab in the App Store app
