HT201210 How do I backup iphone on a different hard drive?

Hi!
I want to update my iphone but I need to back it up before updating. Fine.  But it keeps backing up to my C drive and I don't have room for it.  My preference is set for a drive other than C.  So, I'm not sure why it keeps trying to backing up in C?  I need a back up for my back up?
Thanks in advance,
Lissa

oh... that really *****...
My C drive is only has 5GB free, total 40GB.  It's a really old computer.  Anyways, everything is stored on an external hard drive.  I hope they'll change that someday.
Thanks for the info!

  • How to move mail settings to a different hard drive

My OS 10.4.11 startup hard drive was corrupted by the most recent automatic software update (either iTunes or a security update.) I figured out how to boot up from a different hard drive that had OS 10.4.8 on it. But when I access Mail, it has settings for my old ISP. Is there a file or files I can copy from my original startup drive to my current one that will transfer over my ISP access settings, username, stored password, etc? I had a dickens of a time getting the original setting right and don't want to repeat the process. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi David, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    The Files/Folder you need are...
First I'd backup your whole Mail folder, by right clicking on it in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place... only the plist is separate.
    Move this whole folder...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/
    And this file...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

  • HT1766 Can itunes backup ipad/iphones to a different hard drive in windows?

I currently have a 100GB hard drive I use for my windows operating system, and itunes uses this location to backup my various iphones, and ipads. However I don't have enough hard disk space to manage the backups. Is it possible to direct itunes to backup and ipad to an external hard drive?

Yes. See this previous discussion. Some Googling is still required.

  • How do i backup iphoto to an external hard drive

How do i back up iphoto to an external drive?  Also, how do I do it repeatedly so I don't have to recopy every photo each time, only the new ones?

Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

  • How do I backup my HDD in dual hard drive configuration (the other is an SSD)?

I have 2 hard drives in my Macbook Pro 15" early 2011. I think people are becoming more familiar with this arrangement: the boot drive is the SSD located in the original hard drive bay and my old 500 GB hard drive is in a data doubler in the optical bay.
I'm trying to replace the 500 gig drive with 1TB drive i bought today. Any ideas how to clone the old 500 gig onto the new one?
    Thanks

download and install carbon copy cloner - free - and use it to do the clone.
you'll need a USB external enclosure - around $10 - install your new drive there and proceed with the clone.

  • How to install extra media on a different hard drive?

I just bought Logic Pro via the download.
    It installed automatically.
I installed the first group of media that it wanted to install. About 2 gigs worth.
I'd like to install the rest but I need them to live on another drive. The 2nd internal drive would be great.
I can not figure out where in settings I can change the path.
This just does not make sense.
Can someone give me some ideas?
    Thanks
(I'm trying to do this on my iMac w/ OS 10.8.2)

Maybe I would be better off asking the question like this…
My iMac is configured with an SSD drive with 250 GB, as the main drive where programs are installes. There are 88.15 gigs free.
My 2nd internal HD is a 2 TB drive with 1.21 Available.
There is a backup drive attached and another drive as well, both of these via firewire.
Where would be the best place to install the media files for Logic Pro? I was thinking that my 2nd internal hard drive would be the best place. Just can't figure out how to get them to go there, or how to move them there.
    Thanks.

  • HT3275 How can I backup my computer to a hard drive attached to my router using Time Machine?

Time Machine does not list my external drive as an option.

Is it a "normal" external HD, connected to the router via a USB or FireWire cable?  If so, that's not supported.
If it's a Network drive (NAS), connected to the router via an Ethernet cable, make sure it's compatible with Time Machine for the version of OSX you're running (many aren't, and some that worked on Leopard don't work on Snow Leopard, etc.).
If it is compatible,  the maker should provide instructions.

How do you backup IPhone Contact List to PC Computer(XP) ?

The easiest way that I have found is to open Outlook, go back to Itunes & select your phone.
Choose the 'Info' tab at the top of the screen & tick the box marked 'Sync contacts with' & choose Outlook from the drop down box.
    Image attached may explain better.

how do i backup iphone 3g without iTune on a new Mac? iTunes wants to do an update before it can sync, but if i do that it will erase everything on it.

    Don't do what xtremecarbon said.
Do you have access to your previous iTunes library, maybe in a computer backup?
If not, you'll need some 3rd party software to get your data off your iPhone... try TouchCopy.

  • How do i back up my iphone to an external hard drive and not my computer

How do I back up my iphone to an external hard drive attached to my pc and not my pc?  My disk on my pc is almost full and even though I selected the external hard drive it still seems to try to back it up to my computer, then says I don't have sufficient storage.  I cahnged my folder under preferences to the External Drive folder.

This is where iTunes stores backups for different operating systems: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now.  But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

    Hi iVain
Fire up *Disk Utility*, click the Restore tab, then drag your old and new TM drives into the Source and Destination fields. Click Restore, and a complete copy of your old TM files will be made on the new drive. Go to TM preferences and select the new drive, and it will continue backing up just as it left off.
