HT201210 I did everything on the list above, and am still getting the "...iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (-1). Now what?
Tried to run the iPhone update on my iPhone 4. After an interminable amount of time (4+ hours) the screen remained black. I unplugged it from the computer. Still black (as if off). I hit the round button twice, and got the USB > iTunes image on the screen. When I plugged it in, it said I had to restore it. (why??) So, I gave up and hit "restore." Two hours later, got an error message, "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (-1)." I hit "more information" and went through the list of things to do, did them all. Then ran Restore again and got the same message.
Now what? Helpful info would be much appreciated.

"the iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred (2)"
Yesterday I connected my iPhone 4 to my Windows 7 laptop, and went through to install the latest security update for iPhone through iTunes. When it was installing the software update, the phone froaze, and then this happened:"the iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred (2)"
Now, I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Bonjour and iTunes, to no avail. I have done the iPhone reboot method, and the phone will be identified as "iPhone" but not recognised as mine. iTunes states this phone is in recovery mode and I have tried numerous times to restore it.
Windows doesn't detect the phone while this is happening. It will not restore and the error is still popping up. I have followed as many threads to rectify this but nothing seems to be working.
I can resore it on my iMac but the reset date for the iPhone on this computer is six months old.
Any suggestions? When you say you uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, did you follow the directions in this Apple support document exactly? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
That will make a difference on Windows computers. After that, try and reconnect and restore. -
The iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred 1015
Hello everyone,
After upgrading to ios 4, my iPhone 3GS is stuck recovery and I am asked to restore it. However the operation cannot complete since at the end I get an error message that " the iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred 1015". What should I do? I am not close to any apple store and I cannot go there? Also, does the warranty allows me to get this fixed?
Thanks in advanceSo that means that there is no way this thing can get fixed? How about degrading the ios 4.3 to 4.2? Is there any legal way to do that? Any comment/help is appreciated
P.S: I was thinking about jail breaking it since it is the only way that Google is suggesting. Would that be a better approach since I am tired of living with out a phone? -

the iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (1015).
Error 1015: This error is typically caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple. This error can also occur when an unauthorized modification of the iOS has occurred and you are now trying to restore to an authorized, default state.

From the article the question was posted from:
Errors related to third-party security software
Error 2, 4 (or -4), 6, 1000, 9006
Follow the steps to troubleshoot security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. An incorrectly set default packet size can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or phobos.apple.com isn't blocked by a firewall or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps under "Advanced steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw)" below for file locations.
Restore your device while connected to a different network.

the iphone iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (1015).
1015 error: There are 4 possible causes of this error:
The activation server truly is unavailable. Rare, usually fixed within minutes.
Your antivirus or firewall or router's firewall is blocking access to
gs.apple.com on ports 80 and 443.
Your iPhone is jailbroken or otherwise hacked.
The computer you connected to during the restore/update was
used to hack/jailbreak some other iOS device, and its
network database was corrupted during the process.

Error 1 or -1
This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Usually this is caused by your antivirus or firewall blocking iTunes access to the Internet. It can also occur if the phone is jailbroken or if the computer you are using was ever used to jailbreak an iDevice. -
