An iPhone 3GS can go to iOS 6.0.1, the latest available iOS. and you do that via iTunes. You need iTunes version 10.7

However, the iPhone 3G can only go 4.2.1.

Your iPhone was hacked/jailbroken in order to unlock to to work with T-Mobile. When you updated it you broke the hack and the iPhone is now locked again to the original cell provider, most likely AT&T.

After unlocking you will need to use Google and learn the procedure to clear the unlock hack and Restore it. -
I have iphone 4; tried to sync it said I need to update software so I clicked ok - it then said I need to restore and did above got to stage 3, clicked restore and update, but it comes up with an error saying iphone cannot be found Please help!!!

What do you mean how can you unlock it? If it was truly "sim-free" it would not have locked when you updated.
ONLY the carreir the phone is locked to can authorize unlocking it. Contact them if you haven't managed to brick it entirely now. -

I recently updated my iOS on my Iphone 3Gs and it won't sync any of my music or photo's. I'm extremely frustrated and annoyed that I can't put any of my music or photo's onto my Iphone as the new iOS (5.1) won't sync.

I have to think you have tried operating the iPhone with the charging cable plugged into a charger and outlet or USB. It is likely you have tried this and it failed to operate. Have you tried a Reset on the iPhone to see if that will cause the battery to function ling enough to do an iCloud backup or iTunes backup?

I have iphone 3gs with BSNL connection. Recently a message came as update OS and it was done to OS 6 with revised maps etc. But now the map is not a correct one without proper road names and refernces. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5209 might help you. An iPhone 4 can airplay content from apps that support airplay and iTunes but it cannot mirror. If your game does not have airplay in the app you cannot mirror it to the apple TV so I don't know if you can play just the music. You should have no problem playing your iTunes over airplay though.

Are you sure your phone has not been unlocked or jailbroken at some time as the same thing happened to me.
I had the phone secondhand and did not know. Updating to IOS 5 locked the phone back to the original service provider which was AT&T in USA and I am in UK.
