So tonight I updated my 4s over 3g to ios 7.1 it took forever and said connect to itunes. It said it was in recovery mode & needed to be restored but would wipe all content. I have never made a backup because my computers hard drive crashed (luckily the pics were on the phone) and now after updating like apple said I should it wants me to wipe my phone... I can't loose pics of my kids births and birthdays... I tried the holding buttons and letting off to exit recovery mode with no success... I don't know what to do but I swear if apple makes me loose the priceless pics of my kids I will never buy any apple device ever again... and I will make sure no family or friend ever does either... there has to be a way somehow.. some data recovery some program... I dunno if tinyumbrella can exit it for me without hacking or jailbreaking (which I don't dare/want to do) but i need a solution. I have researched this for hours and hours with no solution so far. If I have to pay $$ for it fine I will but after I recover my data that way I will be going to samsung... anyone with a solution would be greatly appreciated... any solution...

that makes no sense... it was only doing an update... if that's the case it should have promted me to back up first if this is even possible... there is a program that says it can recovery anything that hasn't been written over yet.. so would this not work? http://www.iphone-data-recovery.com/iphone-data-recovery.html or would the apple store be able to recover it??? i've done plenty of data recovery on computers... why wouldn't it be possible on an Iphone... does apple seriously not care about thier customers at all??? how about thier employees that are gonna get more than an earful tomorrow when I walk in there store??? No wonder samsung paid 2 million to apple in pennies when they got sued... (how does it feel to be screwed with apple?!)

If you restore from backup.
You should have made sure that everything was on your computer bef ore updating anyway. Did you fail to do that?
All pics taken with iphone should be imported to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera, most especially before any update/restore/etc. Did you fail to do that?

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

Probably over 200 million people have been able to restore their phone after updating on iTunes. 400 million if you consider that many people have updated more than once.
Have you restored it as directed? I gather from the fact that you posted that you tried and something went wrong. If you post what you did and what went wrong, including the error message and error number, we can probably help get your phone running again.

I had some new albums I bogut from Itunes and wanted to put them on my Ipod Touch. Went to do that, ITunes said there was an update. I downloaded the update and then I couldn't see anything in my Ipod nor listen to anything. The screen of my Ipod shows a USB cable pointing to Itunes and when I plug it into ITunes again I get the message "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." And the ONLY option it gives me is to restore my IPod to factory settings. I looked online for answers but all I see are people having problems with this because they bricked their phone, which I haven't ever done or even know how to do. If the music is not in your iTunes library (it is not in the backup that iTunes makes), you can redownload it if you are in the USA.

Then the box says "Are you sure you want to restore the iphone to it's factory settings? all of your.....etc." I click Restore and Update
then it goes into software update
at the end of the software update it says "Itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode...."
All this time, the screen of the iphone stays on with USB to Itunes
I might add that while the phone was in it's first attempt at recovery mode, it was accidentally unplugged.

Is the device actually in recovery mode? What is showing on the display?
If it's the "Connect to iTunes" screen, then the information is already lost.
If you've forced the device in DFU mode... reboot it and simply sync with the computer.

The best way to backup your iPad is the way that makes the most sense in your situation and the way that works best for you. There is no hard and fast answer. But since you asked .....
I prefer using iTunes because I don't have to worry about having enough space available in iCloud. You are allotted 5GB of space with the free iCloud account, but that is really not that much storage space at all. You can purchase more space, but IMO, its crazy to pay for cloud storage if you have your own computer. On top of that, you have more control when you use your computer. You can backup the content on your computer in order to have backups of backups. You can't do that with iCloud. Another disadvantage to using iCloud is that you always need to be connected to WiFi in order to backup to iCloud. Not everybody always has access to WiFi every minute of every day.

You can try to restart the iPhone to exit recovery mode.

Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.

It also happened to me. What I did was to put my USB connector at the back of my PC (the main USB port) then I open my iTunes again and Viola, it solves my problem.

If you had subscribed to iTunes Match, yes, everything in your iTunes Library that was a "match" can be downloaded again.

You should really read the manual.

Restore. When given the choice, choose to use backup.

They would only be where you put them. What program did you use to import them? Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all. You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.
