i just put my phone down for 2 minutes and i look back and it went into recovery mode i didnt touch nothing and last time i was using it, it was working well. so i go to restore it and i get error 9 when it goes to verify it with apple. i have tried everything changing usb cable changing computers restarting my computer, re downloading itunes. everything but nothing seems to work. side not i manged to download the ios 5.1.1 for i phone 4 and now it says the firmware might be corrput. so if anyone can help it would be greatly aprriciated. i have i phone 4. ios 5.1 its was bought less then a year ago if the helps a bit better

Then I press the "Restore iPhone..." button on iTunes. It asks me if I'm sure I want to "restore it to the factory settings" and I click "Restore and Update". It then says that its "extracting software", "preparing the iphone to restore", "waiting for the iphone", then "verifying iphone restore with Apple". As this is going on the "connect to iTunes" sign is shown on the screen of the iPhone. When the "waiting for the iPhone" part starts, my screen goes black, then the apple logo pops up. The "verifying iphone restore with apple" comes on the iTunes and the status bar appears underneath the Apple logo on my phone's screen. It sits there for a couple of seconds with no progress and then the screen goes black. Then iTunes has the same **** message saying "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be resotred. An unknown error occured (9)."
I've gone through this process countless times in the past few hours and have done everything that apple support has told me. The windows system is fully updated. So is the iTunes. I've restarted the computer. I have no idea whats wrong and its making my blood boil.
A couple of notes about the phone:
It's over a year old. It's never had water damage. It was nearing the max capacity of its internal storage. This has never happened before. I keep it in an Otter Box. I had very little problems with the phone. Lately a couple of apps like snapchat and the barstool sports app were taking a little longer to open up or would randomly close out and sometimes my camera would take a while to get going. But this problem is just ridiculous and completely rendered the phone useless.Hello Sean,
It sounds like you are constantly needing to restore your phone because it keeps going into recovery mode. Usually putting a device into recovery mode and restoring it can help isolate an issue to your iPhone hardware if an issue persists afterwards. I would try manually putting it into recovery mode and restoring it 1 more time:

If that does not resolve it the symptoms indicate to me that it is a hardware issue causing this to happen and would seek service for it:

My iphone 5 went into search mode and I can't place or receive calls or use the internet but my text messages work. Sprint had me do a master reset and my phone doesn't work at all now I can't get it past the activation. Will I have to pay for repairs in store because I didnt get the Apple care plan when I purchased it. I tried to update to ios 7.0.1 and my iphone 5 went into recovery mode and said i had to plug it in to itunes so i did and it restored to factory settings and i lost everything and i am pretty sure i dont have anything backed up on iCloud.. Then you have no data from which to backup, I'm afraid.
This would be a good time to review the User Guide and learn how to use your phone as recommended so data loss like this doesn't happen again.

Iphone 4 went into recovery mode and once connected to Itunes and restore began it would either fail to restore and show an error message or would not be able to finish restore even after trying for about an hour. Any solutions? I was trying to update to iOS 7.0.4 when it went into recovery mode.
As mentioned in the support document those errors relate to USB issues and/or security software. Make sure you are not using a USB hub and temporarily disable your security software. If you have a lot of different things connected via USB on your computer, remove everything except the phone, keyboard and mouse. Do not use USB connectors in the keyboard or monitor. Use one right on the comptuer itself.

After updating my Iphone 4s to os 7.1.1 from 7.1 over the air, my phone went into recovery mode. Yet when I try to restore it with Itunes on my windows 7 laptop it says the network connection has been reset. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network is active, or try again later. My phone has the itunes logo and charger symbol on it, as well as an arrow pointing at the Itunes logo. After holding the sleep button down or even doing the hard reset the same screen comes up on my phone regardless of whether it is plugged in or not to my computer. I have turned my computer off and on again. It is plugged in and charging as it's battery life is very short. I also reset my modem and the same error message pops up. The only option on my computer when my phone is plugged in is to restore it. My firewall also allows Itunes through it. I have literally tried everything I know being someone who knows very little about technology. I also do not want to hear about how the update worked for other people. My phone has been in recovery mode for 5 hours at least now so it will just make me more frustrated if a bunch of people post about how the update worked for them.
Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

iPhone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore it. Now the only option iTunes allows is for "restore & upgrade", it is not offer an option to restore from a backup, says that must first do the upgrade, when attempting to do the upgrade the iPhone won't accept it.
How can I restore from a back up in recovery mode when the only option is "restore and upgrade"?

I need help fast. I'm on call and this is my only phone.It finally restored. I saw that a couple folks said they kept trying and finally got restored. So I decided to keep trying and retrying while I researched the techno routes folks described--DFU, tinyumbrella, and scary programming processes. I decided I'd rather put my sim chip in one of our old iphones and take mine to a shop than suffer through a bunch of complication. I switched to Apple b/c I got tired of playing programmer. I digress. After a few minutes itunes would drop my phone from dashboard yet continued showing the checking with Apple...status. So I repeatedly force-quit itunes, restarted phone, unplugged and plugged back into computer. Each time I'd do whatever itunes prompted then walk away. After about an hour of this, for no apparent reason, it went directly into recovery. Didn't lose any photos but did have to reinstall most of my apps. It has to be an Apple network issue related to this particular upgrade.

Same here. I tried to update my iPhone 5S and iPad 4 to 7.1 but iTunes wiped out them. This thing already happened for iOS 7.0.6 update. What happened to Apple? I am really curious whether Apple is aware of this problem.
