Go here: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750 and download iOS 4.2.1 for the iPhone 3G. Perform a restore, but hold down ALT when clicking restore. Restore from this file you just downloaded. You should not get 1015 as you are upgrading, but if you get a different error, report back.

Media and contacts are NOT part of the iPhone backup. Media should already be in your iTunes library and contacts should be in whatever address book or cloud service you were syncing them to. Just re-sync them to the phone.

The Update was not completed and due to incomplete update your Device is now in Recovery Mode and the only option left with you is to Restore your iPhone using iTunes on your Computer which will take your iPhone to Factory settings. -

If the screen shows a plug going to itunes, then you have no choice, It's in recovery mode. You'll be given the chance to restore from a backup either from itunes or icloud.
I assume when you got the message to update (was this for the ios or update some apps?), that was before the device when dead. At any rate, doing a restore does not change the ios. -

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.

I was trying to update my iphone software then there was an error and it started to remove stuff out of my phone. it said it would restore since my last backup which was last year. I dont care about my apps or music. Are my photos and contacts removed since my last backup?
Did you fail to create a backup of the device prior to attempting to update?
Why did you choose to update iOS without first ensuring there was a backup and that all of your media and pictures were on the computer the device normally syncs with? Sorry, but that was beyond not smart.
If you've lost media, pictures, contacts, etc, there is nothing that can be done without a current backup to restore from. Hopefully you have learned an important lesson. -
