Error 1015: This error is typically caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple. This error can also occur when an unauthorized modification of the iOS has occurred and you are now trying to restore to an authorized, default state.

1015 error: There are 4 possible causes of this error:
The activation server truly is unavailable. Rare, usually fixed within minutes.
Your antivirus or firewall or router's firewall is blocking access to
    gs.apple.com on ports 80 and 443.
Your iPhone is jailbroken or otherwise hacked.
The computer you connected to during the restore/update was
used to hack/jailbreak some other iOS device, and its
network database was corrupted during the process.

While upgrading my iPhone 3GS to iOS 4.2 something went wrong and came up with the message "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred  [1015]." Now it will not start at all. It just stays on screen with USB and the iTune picture. What can I do to get it going again. I only tried to upgrade because I was prompted to up-grade and now I am helpless. I did a backup before starting the upgrade. The error message did not tell what to do next.  Any help is very much appreciated.

Usually that means the iPhone was hacked to unlock it from the original
    carrier .
Updating the operating system locks it back to that original carrier
    You could try this

However if the iPhone was hacked it is probably a paper weight  now
and as this is an Apple hosted forum  you can get no further help here

  • The iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred 1015

    Hello everyone,
After upgrading to ios 4, my iPhone 3GS is stuck recovery and I am asked to restore it. However the operation cannot complete since at the end I get an error message that " the iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred 1015". What should I do? I am not close to any apple store and I cannot go there? Also, does the warranty allows me to get this fixed?
    Thanks in advance

So that means that there is no way this thing can get fixed? How about degrading the ios 4.3 to 4.2? Is there any legal way to do that? Any comment/help is appreciated
P.S: I was thinking about jail breaking it since it is the only way that Google is suggesting. Would that be a better approach since I am tired of living with out a phone?

  • TS3694 the iphone"iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015)

I tried updating my iPhone 3 to the latest operating system via iTunes and once connected it would not work...
I then tried to do a system restore on the iPhone via iTunes and I was given the following error message: iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015)
The iPhone is now completely blank and just comes up with the Usb symbol to connect to iTunes on the screen, it won't do anything else and the same error message appears when I connect to iTunes....
    Help....??
    Thanks in anticipation....

It's 99% sure theat the iPhone was hacked/jailbroken to use another carrier or downgrading IOS. There's no help with this.

  • The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015)

I have had a huge problem since yesterday evening.
I can't get my iPhone to work.
First I tried to install firmware "iPhone11_2.0_5A240dRestore.ipsw".
That worked until I started the phone, I got a purple screen and couldn't get in to my iPhone.
So, I thought, "fine lets get the old firmware in place instead by restoring with: "iPhone1,11.1.4_4A102Restore.ipsw". I get the same message everytime after the restore is supposed to be done:
"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015).
I have been searching for a solution on internet and tried about anything. I still got the same message.
Please, if anyone has anything to contribute with, let me know.
    /John

Modifying the baseband is is not something the iPhone software supports.
This is the warning when you update the iPhone:
"Apple has discovered that some of the unauthorized unlocking programs available on the Internet may cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software. IF YOU HAVE MODIFIED YOUR iPHONE'S SOFTWARE, APPLYING A SOFTWARE UPDATE MAY RESULT IN YOUR iPHONE BECOMING PERMANENTLY INOPERABLE. Making unauthorized modifications to the software on your iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement, and the inability to use your iPhone due to unauthorized software modifications is not covered under your iPhone's warranty."
