This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Usually this is caused by your antivirus or firewall blocking iTunes access to the Internet. It can also occur if the phone is jailbroken or if the computer you are using was ever used to jailbreak an iDevice.

I have tried to hold the "home" and "power" button to reboot
I have tried powering it off
I have tried, to unplug the cable, hold the "home" button and then plug it in.
Can't check the SN or warranty, cause it is stuck in restore mode.
Is the hard drive gone? Should there be something replaced.

Check security software. Ensure that communication to gs.apple.com is allowed. Follow this article for assistance with security software. iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.

  • I have recently bought a 3g, i have connected to itunes, when i get to the last stage of the restore it states activating iphone then comes up with the following message - could not be activated bcause activation server unavailable, its been saying this f

    Help please?

Either your antivirus/firewall is blocking access to the activation server, or you have a redirect in your hosts file. Try disabling the antivirus and firewall, and also check the hosts file. Look for any lines in it that contain "gs.apple.com". If you find them, delete them.
    Mac: /etc/hosts
    Windows: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
BTW, if you ever used your computer to jailbreak or hack any iDevice those lines WILL be in your hosts file. And if you ever hacked your iPhone to install a different baseband you will also get that error, but in that case the problem is unsolveable.

  • The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (3). How do I fix this?

I had a problem with my iPhone 5 connecting to my service provider (verizon) and also to the internet just minutes after I had used the internet to browse before work this morning.  I tried soft reset, hard reset, and connecting to my computer, but nothing worked to get it back to normal.  I decided to do a system wipe and restore it as well, but I get that error: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (3)."  I googled that and searched for literally 7 hours without any luck.  Any and all help is appreciated.  Thanks!

This has just happened to me today. I have an iphone 5 on Verizon. I was using the internet on the device normally when it started. It couldn't access any online data even though it had 4 bars of service and LTE. I restarted it and it would be stuck "Searching for network". I tried wiping the phone with no luck. It gets stuck at around 99% of the firmware restore process and hangs there for about 25 minutes before itunes gives me the error described above. I tried the recover-mode restore with the same results.
I need a working phone ASAP, this is extremely frustrating!

  • IPhone 3GS - The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1013)

    Hey everyone,
First off, here are my specs:
iTunes Version: 10.4.1.10 running on Windows 7
iPhone 3GS running 4.3.5 (not jailbroken)
I'm going nuts with this issue with my iPhone 3GS. After messing around with my phone, I managed to put it into recovery mode, which was not intentional. So I thought I could just restore my iPhone and resync, but everytime I do so, the iPhone will reach 99% (according to the progress bar on the phone), and then pause for 2 minutes and then come back with this error:
The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1013)
So I've looked at the Apple support page and followed those steps but didn't work. I have searched forums, youtube instructional videos on how to fix this error, but nothing seemed to work. I know about the "hosts" file in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc, but when I checked, there were no DNS entries for gs.apple.com. I've also tried restoring on different computers (including a Macbook), but the same issue occurs.
I have a feeling that because I'm using the latest version of iTunes, that it's causing this problem. I want to know if anyone can offer their help because again, it's driving me nuts!
    Thanks,
    Neocec

  • The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (11).

I recieved an iPod from a friend of mine. He has bought a new one and is currently using it with his apple ID. I have plugged in the iPod he gave me and attempted to restore it. When it goes through most of the restoration process the error "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (11)." pops up. The iPod is also stuck on a screen with a USB cord pointing twords the iTunes icon, i shut it off then turn back on and this image is still on the screen. The iPod also does not appear in MyComputer. It does appear in iTunes but it only has the name, no serial number, capacity, or software version. I also re-installed iTunes.  I am using windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop.
I would appreciate any help that anyone has to offer.
    Thank you.

  • The iphone "iphone" could not be restored

    Hello,
I'v tried to update my Iphone to the new OS 3.1.3 and when it started to restore the iphone with the new OS i got this error:
the iphone "iphone" could not be restored
I tried restarting my computer and almost everything i found on the net and nothing works. I keep getting the same error.
    please advise.

The first place to start is to ensure that you are using a USB 2.0 port located directly on the computer - not via a hub. If your computer has ports on the back, use these as they are directly connected to the motherboard.

  • The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error has occured [14]

What does this mean? I cant find anything when I go to DFU mode. None other, my mum wont let me call apple support. I need a dev on this one please.

I had similar problems after an upgrade to the firmware on my iPod Touch Gen1 crashed out, and then the attempted Restore threw an error "The ipod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred [1604]".
After much searching and trying in vain of various support articles I found http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275. I rebooted my PC and reconnected my iPod via a different USB port. Voila, the Restore magically worked and I am back with a functioning iPod Touch once again.
Shame on Apple (and Microsoft XP) for such a bad experience. Good luck to you.

  • The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored.  An unkown error occured (6).

New iPhone 6.  Activated it.  Restored from iTunes.  No issues - everything worked correctly.  iTunes "suggested" that I update to 8.1.  After the software had been extracted, it freezes and then gives the error "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored.  An unknown error occurred (6)."  I have taken the option to restore the phone to factory - same error.
