2. They must also be registered with iMessage

With the Apple iMessage app, You can only Message with other iOS users - iPads, iPod Touch, iPhone users and Macs running Mountain Lion or higher. With your iPhone, you can send standard SMS text messages to any phone, including Android phones.
The iPad cannot send SMS messages or receive them either.

Yikes, this is no bueno let's get these messages back up and flowing. Are you able to send out regular text messages ok? Ensure your Picture Messages feature is turned on, follow these steps: Settings>Messages>MMS Messaging. Also ensure Send as SMS is turned on as well. If these features are turned on then try this: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings then retest. Keep us posted please.

That setting is not relevant to sending SMS messages to non-iPhones. It only affects what happens when an iMessage won't go through to an iOS device. And, what the phone number is labeled has no effect on anything. You could create a custom label "Rutabaga" and the SMS would still go through if the account was properly provisioned. Those labels are for human brain convenience only.

Make sure that MMS is turned on in Settings. Sometimes that can get turned off during an update, if you recently did that. Next try would be a reset. If that doesn't help, then contact the carrier, as SMS and MMS are carrier specific functions.

That's a built in limitation of iOS. If you need to send messages to larger groups of people, you'll either need to send them in batches of 10 or use a dedicated group messaging app. GroupMe works pretty well. Blackberry Messenger is also an option, though I don't like the interface as much.

Can no longer send or receive text messages

Hi, I'm new to this but here i go. I have a 3GS Iphone that has the latest update. Recently the plan i had was a family plan and just a few days ago i split the two phones that was on my plan to be two separate plans (accounts). The other phone that was on my plan texts and receives texts perfectly, but as for my phone i cannot. I compose the text and send it but it never reaches the person. Also people call me asking why i am not texting them back so that means i cant receive texts either. I restored my phone twice already, one i restored it as my original phone then as a brand new phone and i still cannot receive or send texts. I havent gone to an apple store yet because they are closed right now but if someone knows how to fix this please let me know. Thank you, i appreciate it.

Initially it sounds like a setting with your carrier and the plan the iphone is on is not enabled for text messages by your carrier.
With the phone in a 'new' state and not working again indicates that it is probably a carrier issue.
Questions for you;
1. Was the iphone being used before the plan changed and was it sending and receiving texts fine then?
2. Did you receive a new SIM car for one or both of the phones when the plans changed?
3. If you swap the SIMs between the phones, does the issue follow the phones or does now the other phone have trouble with the texting?
If when swapping the SIMs the problem follows the iphone, then there maybe some problem with the phone.
If when the SIMs are swapped and the problem does not follow the phone, then the problem is with either the SIM or the carrier settings.

I just got my Blackberry Curve 2 days ago. I played around with it, trying to learn it and I took a picture and then sent it to see how it worked. It worked fine. It sent and the person received it. I sent 2 more pictures the same day nd everything worked fine. I could even receive messages too. But the next day, and today I have tried sending picture messages and it won't send. It will load and act like it's going to send but then it will just sit there in my message option with the clock icon beside it like it's trying to send but never does. It doesn't even tell me that it's unable to send. The message just sits there. And also, I can't receive picture messages anymore. They just won't even come through. Can anybody help me?

with the device on, pull your battery out for 20 seconds and put it back in, wait till you are fully booted and try again
what are the letters next to your signal strength?
do normal SMS text messages work, and do emails work?

A simple text message is different from a picture message - from both the cellular carrier's and the iPhone's point of view.
To allow pictures in messages on your iPhone, check Settings > Messages > MMS Messaging = "On".
Also make sure your cellular carrier allows it (generally costs more than simple text messages).

So about a month ago I dropped my phone in the snow and to replace it I had a really old flip phone. Once I activated that phone, I received a flurry of messages, like you usually would if you turned your phone off and several people texted you. Though, once I tried sending one, the message would fail to send and would say that there was no signal. After that, I couldn't receive messages either. I could, however, call and receive phone calls.
I called customer support and they said that I should try bringing it in or it might be due to the age of the phone. So I got a hold of an LG Cosmos and activated it, however with the same problem: can make and receive phone calls but no texts. Any help?

Here to help get those messages flowing again! Was your previous device an iPhone? If so, are users being sent messages iPhone users? Zip code? Has the previous device been powered down?

Any suggestions? I have version 4.2.1 installed.

Try a hard reset, hold down the sleep and home buttons, ignore the red Off slider, wait for the Apple logo, let the buttons go.

After updating to IOS 7.0.3 I can't send or receive text messages. Everything is working and normal.

I have the same problem since updating to IOS 8.3. Any app to which I want to send a new link via IMessage does not allow me to select a contact to send the IMessage to. Using a pre-existing thread does not have same problem.

Unable to send or receive text messages after apply s/w update on Q10

After apply software release 10.1.0.4181 (size 6mb) on my Q10, I can no longer send or receive text messages, pls help. At first I thought the text messages were only collapsed, but I am unable to send, receive or open any previous chat. I have rebooted the device multiple times, including removing the battery. When trying to do a text message, system seems stuck on the last message received yesterday, and am unable to open this chat session, reply, compose. I cannot compose for any contact, nor able to receive any text messages. PLs help !!

I removed my battery again, this time left out for 5 minutes. SMS is now working again. (previously approx 2 min)
However, the problem I was experincing, I have had before, where I cannot send an sms message. I believe I may have hit a hot key and basically does not allow you to send a message. Typically I reboot at this point and sms works again. I will try your new os option after I verify all is working properly again. Thank you for your help.
