HT201240 locked out as administrator

I changed my password on my macbook and I can't remember what it is to get into my admin account. I saw that I can restart it like the geniuses do at apple. But I'm worried about trying. Any advice on how to do this correctly and not kill my macbook?

Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If that completes but still can't login...

  • Got locked out as administrator

    I know this has been asked before but could not find an answer that I could use.
    Got locked out from my computer as an administrator -- did not forget the log in code - but I get the computer shaking when I enter the log-in info that I have been using for a while.
    Tried to booth from the Lion usb start up disk -- tried to use previous back ups -- I just can not get in ...
    Any one with ideas -- besides taking it to service
    I'll never make it as a hacker since I can not even get into my own computer that I have used for years....

    Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    When the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
    In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
    Select your boot volume if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
    You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • Locked out of Administration Link

    Hi Gurus,
    I was trying to troubleshoot an issue and by mistake denied access to "Authenticated-role" to "Access to Administration" under "Manage Privileges" within dashboards. Now no matter who I login as, I do not see the "Administration" link. How do I undo this?
    When I use my Administrator credentials or original weblogic credentials, it still logs in without the Administration link( behaves like a BIConsumer role). This is urgent. Could someone help me?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    ya that will work and also you can try opening the catalog in online mode and make the changes
    before this can you try this for me open the link as http://<server_name>:9704/analytics/saw.dll?Managegroups and then look for presentation server administrator group edit it and see if you  have the weblogic or any other id's listed who want to have access to Administration tab

  • How to change your Administration Server password when you're locked out

    How to change your Administration Server password when you're locked out
    The Netscape server products are all managed by a single administration
    server, which gives you a web forms-based interface you can use to
    configure them, start/stop them, check their logs, and so forth.
    <P>
    There are three levels of protection that keep the general public from
    being able to get into your administration server and mess up the
    configuration of any Netscape servers you have installed:
    <P>
    <OL>
    <LI> <B>Obscurity:</B> Your administration server can run on any port you'd
    like (usually something between 81 and 30,000), so if an attacker
    doesn't know what port to find your admin server on, he can't get
    into it.<P>
    <LI> <B>Host restrictions:</B> You can tell your admin server to only allow
    connections from specific hosts, and to reject all other hosts.
    <P>
    <LI> <B>Password protection:</B> Even if a user connects to your admin server
    from a valid host, he won't be allowed to get into even the first
    page unless he presents a valid username and password.
    </OL>
    <P>
    If you, the legitimate administrator of your web server, are unable to
    access the administration server (if you forgot your password or the
    admin port number or if you accidentally locked your own site out),
    then here is how to get past each of these levels of protection:
    <P>
    <OL>
    <LI> If you don't remember what port your administration server is
    running on, just look in your "ns-admin.conf" file, which is in
    the "admserv" directory under your Netscape server directory.
    (For 1.x web servers on Windows NT, run "regedt32" and go to the
    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Netscape\Administration" section).
    You will see a "Port" entry there that specifies what port your
    admin server is on. You can change this value if you want your
    admin server to run on a different port, but make sure you restart
    the admin server after you change the value.
    <P>
    <LI> If your admin server is complaining "Unauthorized host" when you
    try to connect to it, then you can open it up to all sites by
    going into the "ns-admin.conf" file or the "Administration"
    section of your NT registry, as described above, and deleting the
    lines for "Hosts" and "Addresses" (either one of those might not
    be present) then restarting your admin server (on Unix run
    "stop-admin" then "start-admin"; on NT go into the Services
    control panel and stop/start the "Netscape Administration" or
    "Netscape Admin Server" service). You will then be able to get
    back into the admin server, where you can then try new settings
    for your host and address restrictions if you wish.
    <P>
    <LI> If you have forgotten the password to your admin server and now
    you can't log into your admin pages, all is not lost! Go into
    your "ns-home" directory, and into the "admserv" directory under
    that. You should find an "admpw" text file containing a simgle
    line of text, something like this:
    admin:lnOVeixulqkmU
    The first part of that line is the name of your admin account
    (usually just "admin"), and the second part is your admin
    password, encrypted. Edit this file to remove the encrypted
    password so that your file looks like this:
    admin:
    Then shut down your admin server, bring it back up again, and log
    into your admin server but don't give any password. It should let
    you in, at which point you can then go to the appropriate
    configuration page to set a new admin password, and then you're
    back in business.
    </OL><P>
    Note that because it is so easy to change the admin password this
    way, it's good to periodically make certain that your admin
    password file and your web server's configuration files are not
    left world-writable, and that only trusted people have access to
    them. (By default they're not world-writable, but it's good to
    make sure of this from time to time.)

    If you mean that yu forgo the password for yur encrypted backup then you can only:
    Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
    If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.

  • Built in domain administrator... locked out?

    PART-1
    Today our built in domain administrator got locked out. From what I've read this is not possible. We were alerted on it and when I opened the object it said it was locked out. (I'll admit, I didn't try logging in with it). I double checked and the objects
    SID does indeed end in -500 which is indicative of it being the built in account.
    I ran this query:
    $BA=(get-addomain).domainsid
    $BA.tostring() + "-500"
    and the only result I got back was the SID that matched the user in question.
    What's going on? Was it truly locked out? I guess we will run a test tomorrow but I wanted to reach out to the forums too.
    PART-2
    Once this account was locked out we went to the source server and found that it was no longer on the domain. Instead it was in a workgroup that had a name that resembled our domain. I checked the event log and there were a ton of errors with event ID 4097
    that said "The machine [machine-name] attempted to join the domain [FQ-domain-name]\[FQDN-of-PDC] but failed. The error code was 1326". These errors correspond with the time that the account was locked out. There were a ton of them...
    The account that was originally used to join this machine to the domain was the built in admin above (I know, not best practice). Regardless, why would it switch from domain to a workgroup? Why would it attempt to auto re-join? And why would it use the account
    originally used to join the domain?

    I have found my answers...
    Part 1:
    The built-in administrator will get locked out and marked as locked out - however, when you go to log in with it, it will AUTOMATICALLY unlock the account. So essentially it cannot be locked out but it will give off the impression that it is.
    you can however disable the account. .... supposedly if you ever have to recover your domain in restore mode it will enable the account for you... .never had an opportunity to test that and I hope I don't
    Part 2:
    This is a vmware related issue. The machine tried to re-run custom specs. Please see the following vmware article if you are having the same issue.
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2078352
    This is related to deploying machines with custom specs in 5.1 with hosts on build 1743533 (ESXi 5.1 patch 4)

  • Can I enable the root user account from the log in screen when I am locked out of the machine?

    Hello everyone,
    I am working on my friends mac to get it ready to sell. I went into the advanced options of the user and changed the name of the account. That's all I changed. I did read the warning that said if anything was changed it could cause damage, that's why I only changed the name of the user account. I didn't want to mess with anything else. Well, needless to say, I am locked out of the machine. Apparently the root user, system administrator, account was not enabled and I am stuck at the screen that I can get to with my installation disc. So how can I enable the root user account and get back onto the machine from the screen I am at? Can I enable the root user from terminal? I spent a good 8 hours yesterday researching this topic and have come up empty. Changing passwords from commands in terminal is not the problem. I am given just one account to choose from to log on and it's not accepting the password because of the changes I made in the advanced options menu.
    Is there any hope of getting this thing going again? Or have I just screwed myself over?
    Thanks for your help!
    Leah

    You can reset the password.
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Password.html
    Do you need to recover data from it before you sell it?  If not you can just wipe the disk and prepare it for sale.

  • Locked out of Windows XP Boot Camp control panel

    I'm getting locked out of my Boot Camp control panel under Windows XP with the following message:
    "An error occurred while trying to access the startup disk settings.
    You may not have privileges to change the startup disk. Make sure you have administrator privileges and try again."
    Likewise if I try to restart OS X from the XP icon tray, I get this message:
    "Could not locate the Mac OS X boot volume."
    However, holding the alt-key at boot up reveals both startup disks. I can boot successfully into OS X and XP using the alt-key, and I can switch startup disks successfully from the OS X System Preferences pane. Also, the Boot Camp partition is visible to Vmware Fusion and can be used to boot into Windows XP successfully. It's only within native Windows XP that the OS X boot volume is not accessible.
    I'm running Windows XP Home (SP3) with the latest Boot Camp 2.1 update. Re-running the BCUpdateXP.exe program to repair Boot Camp was unsuccessful. The OS X boot volume still can't be accessed from XP. Any ideas out there?

    Same problem, same error message now in October 2008. Running Mac OS X 10.5.5 & Windows XP SP3. Also running MacDrive and Norton Anti-Virus for Windows.
    Problem disappears upon reverting to WinXP SP2 using Windows System Restore. Imperfect fix, but it does work. Revert to last restore point when SP2 was working.

  • Login failed for user 'MgmtSvc-AdminAPI' because the account is currently locked out.

    We are getting the following error on our SMA web service machine in the mgmtsvc-adminapi log file.   Im guessing I could have also posted this in the WAP forum.     Any ideas on what would cause this?
    Also, we noticed the connection strings in the adminapi site are encrypted as well so not sure what the credentials are that WAP adminapi is using.

  • Feature Locked by your administrator...

    Please help. I just set up my HP Officejet Pro 8610. Worked fine for a few days but now I'm locked out. Says:
    This feature has been locked by your administrator or the person who set up the printer.
    Problem is, I am both the admin and person who set up. I do not know what I did to lock myself out. Please help. I am in dire need of a functioning printer for my home office.
    This is my second request! I saw some previous posts for the same problem and someone sent them a disc to override the set up and start from the beginning.

    Hi , I understand that you would like to reset the printer. I would like to help you.
    I can send you that information in a private message.
    In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it. If you appreciate my efforts, please click the 'Thumbs up' button below. Thank You.

  • Lenovo has different F8 screen, can't get to safe mode with command prompt - account locked out

    Thinkpad W500, Win7Pro.  Can't login: "the referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to". I need to boot to safe mode with command prompt to enable the Administrator account (disabled by default) with a "net user administrator /active:yes" command, but Lenova has their own recovery and interfaces which are preventing me from accessing with normal windows techniques. I either need to be able to get a command prompt on the true C: drive, or reset this lockout situation, and fast...  Waiting more than 180 minutes did not work, and using system restore is not an option-key software patches and additions make this very unattractive, and I know how to do that.
    Optional Information:
    Computer OS: Windows 7
    Browser: IE
    Already Tried:
    -ThinkVantage button (reg and advanced views) -a boot disk for pwd reset program (I know password, but I am locked out - didn't help) -F8, Repair options and all safe modes -NOT system restore, as we are trying to not undo months of software revisions - we just need to login!

    If we take the error messages seriously, then probably the first thing that you would have to do would be to replace the malformed library:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security
    If you have another computer with the same operating system, you could connect via target disk mode and copy over the good library to replace the bad one. I don't know if this library is different between 10.2.6 and 10.2.8. If the library were fixed, that might solve your other problems and it might not. There is no way for us to know.
    Alternatively, you could do an archive and install.

  • Developer Account Locked Out

    All,
    I have just done the number one newbie failure. I changed my developer password and then locked myself out of my development environment since I only have one developer user.
    I ran the reset password function; it reset the password but shows it as locked. I'm using Apex user security so I can't just unlock the DB user using the alter user command. How do I unlock it?
    Thank you,
    Keith

    Hello,
    Your instance administrator should be able to unlock it for you.
    If you are the instance administrator (or they're locked out too), then take a look at the apxxepwd.sql script which ships with the APEX install which will reset the password for you.
    Hope this helps,
    John.

  • Admin Account Locked Out Indefnitely

    I want to know steps to retrieve my administrator account(only one) of a domain containing single domain controller has been locked out by a group policy that has been set. The lockout duration has been set to 0(indefnitely, until manually unlocked by the
    administrator).

    Hi,
    Based on my experiences, during the process of promoting a server to Domain Controller, we need to configure a
    Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM) Administrator Account Password, providing this password allows us to restore Active Directory.
    If the scenario in your post occurs, we can use DSRM password to restore AD to a point where the admin’s account is not locked out.
    Therefore, please make sure that administrators perform regular
    backup so we can restore Active Directory after a sudden crash, and remember the DSRM password.

  • Locked out of additional internal drives... Help please

    Any help would be more then welcomed as I did something stupid and need a bit of help to fix it please.
    Had an issue today on my Mac Pro (2.8, Quad 5.1). All was running fine until I went to update a piece of 3rd party software (Fetch). After the download I went to drag new version into my apps folder and was told I didn't have permission to instal the app.
    Now to be clear, I've had a bit of an issue with this before as I'm running 2 mac pros in different locations and drag and copy files and folders from here to there on a regular basis via FTP and external drives. I also have all 4 slots filled on both systems with various drives set up for a particular function along with a number of externals. I've set permissions on both systems and all drives to "read and write" for both my accounts to have full access and each time "apply to enclosed items" was selected.
    But for some reason, from time to time, I have to authorise the file transfer. Haven't figured out the reason but it's not a huge deal so have left it.
    Today was the first time I have had access denied for my home folder when working from same system. Not thinking and while on the phone to someone (this is where I did the stupid part), I opened the info on my boot (startup) drive and decided to add both of my user accounts and change permissions for each in addition to the system, admin and everyone that was already there. This was done while working from it directly and then set options to "apply to enclosed items". Yea, smart I know.
    About 20 minutes passed and then it told me that it didn't like any of my system extensions. I was forced to do a restart and got the spinning wheel for about 30 minutes. Had to do a force quit and open in single user. Applejack wouldn't help at all, nothing. Had to then open cd drive through terminal just to get systems disk inside.
    Restarted from systems disk and tried a simple disk utility repair. System restarted fine but I noticed that I was then locked out of all of my additional internal drives, iDisk included (padlock shown on all drive icons excluding my Boot/Startup drive). Tried opening info on the various drives with apple i option and "permissions denied" popped up each time.
    I then took the step to restore from time machine. Set my restore selection to about 2 hours before I became an idiot. After it was finished I restarted the system hoping that would clear up my mistake but same thing, still locked out of all of my drives aside from boot/startup drive.
    All user accounts that I have added to the boot drive are still showing, I have yet to try and remove them... Figured I would ask for help before I messed it up any further. Spoke to apple care and they have advised me to do what I have done so far.
    Aside from an erase and instal, what steps should I take from this point? Will removing the added accounts clear up the issue?
    Also, any idea as to why I was refused permissions to begin with...?
    Thanks in advance and sorry for the book, just wanted to be as clear as possible.

    Force iPad into Recovery Mode. Follow step 1 to step 3 very closely.
