HT201240 Re: OS X: Changing or resetting an account password (Snow Leopard and earlier)

Can someone help please! I cannot log in to my Mac
Followed these intructions from earlier posts this thread, and got to:
4. Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume. DONE
5. Select the user name of your original administrator account. COULD NOT COMPLETE
- But my original administrator account is not showing. The only option shown for me is "System Administrator (root)".
Luckily I read the note below: Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)".
So now I wait for further advice...

  • HT201240 I've tried the suggestions in "changing or resetting an account password", and when i reboot and do command + s, instead of "root" it says "shell".........what's wrong with my computer!

I've gone in and tried to reboot my computer, A FEW TIMES!, with the command + s stuff, and instead of the "root" it says I'm supposed to get, my computer says "shell"...... I don't know if I did something wrong with my computer, but I need to get back on. I called Apple Support, and they told me that since it's out of my warranty, there's nothing they can do. I can pay 40 freaking dollars to talk to someone, and get a 30 day thing, but *** is that gonna do? I just need back on my computer so I can do homework and get my life back to normal.
I'll try anything, unless it includes spending money, or taking my computer to an Apple Store. There isn't one within 100 miles of me.

I have no account app in my system preferences. Therefor there is no way I know to change my account password.
Is the icon pictured below missing from your System Preferences?
If that is the case, I'd try this.
    1. With System Prefernces closed, locate the file;
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    and trash it.
    Restart your Mac.

If so did you make the changes on your iphone in message settings?

I purchased a refurbished iBook G4-Version 10.4.11 and everytime that I try to purchase anything on iTunes or change something in my account, I click "done" and it says that I have timed out, when I'm on there for less than a minute. Hence, none of my purchases have gone through. What could be causing this?

You need to use a newer Mac OS X version. A G4 can be upgraded to 10.5.8(if desired, buy a retail DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay), but you'll likely find it more cost-effective to buy a secondhand Intel Mac.

  • Installing microsoft office for mac and getting prompt for installer password.  i have put in apple id password and admin password and not working, i have also reset my admin password 3 times and it is still not working? how do i get past this?

installing microsoft office for mac and getting prompt for installer password.  i have put in apple id password and admin password and not working, i have also reset my admin password 3 times and it is still not working? how do i get past this?

You don't use your Apple ID or its password to install anything on your Mac. You use the admin account's name and password.
Use the name and password you last entered when resetting them. The "name" you use is not the short name of the admin account folder.
For example. If you create an admin account of John Smith, the short name given to that account's folder will be johnsmith. So when an app requests an admin name and password to install something, the admin name you enter is John Smith, not johnsmith.

  • Change user account in snow leopard server??

Trying to change a user account picture in snow leopard server. Have couple computers that are on snow leopard and it uses the the network server that has all the login in. I can't change the user icon within system prefernces. Please help me!

There are server user accounts and computer user accounts. System Preferences is for creating and managing computer user accounts. Server Preferences and Workgroup Manager are for creating and managing server user accounts. If you created the account in System Preferences, you won't be able to manage it with Server Preferences or Workgroup Manager.

If you install those new OS X versions over the top of what you already have, your files and preferences should remain.  However, it's a very good idea to have at least one complete backup of your Mac's disk before you try anything like that.

  • Retrieving/resetting my account password for MacBook Air OS X 10.9.4 when FileVault is NOT switched on?

    Hey all,
I've encountered a major problem since purchasing my MacBook Air OS X Mavericks 10.9.4. As I was previously using a Pro with an account password that used to work just fine, I decided to simply set the Air with the same credentials. However, the password I have no recollection of changing is not accepted by my Air. Without it I cannot install any new software and I need several programs urgently. Trouble is, my FileVault is not switched on nor can it be switched on. I cannot reset the password either, as doing so requires me to type in my current one.
    What do I do?
    Kind regards,
    Elena

If you're not using FileVault 2, then FileVault 2 is not involved.   Either use your Apple ID to reset your password, or Method 1 here should get your password reset to one you know.

  • Reset iTunes account password but not accepted

I have an iTunes account in the UK and in Australia. Someone gave me a ITunes gift card a year or so ago which I put into my account and spent some of. When I go to iTunes, log into the Australian store, it does not recognise my name/password combination. I have gone through the password reset process twice, each time providing a brand new never before used password. The system confirms successful password change. Caps Lock not on. When I go and log into the Australian store again, it indicates that I have not put the right combination to log in. My log in name is not an email address it is just a string of letters identifying my name as is appropriate.
Can anyone help with this? Thanks, Andrew

  • Just upgraded macbook to Snow Leopard, and now itunes won't recognize my iphone.  I tried turning all off, and on.  I have the newest version of itunes.  Will I have to reset my iphone (and also ipod touch?), and if so, does it mean I lose anything?

I just upgraded macbook to SnowLeopard 10.6.3 and now itunes won't recognize my iphone.  I tried turning everything off and restarting.  I have the latest version of itunes.  If I have to reset the phone (and ipod touch), what does that mean?  Will I lose anything? How long will it take?  thanks

Start iTunes.  Make sure you really are running the version you think you are.  Sometimes people end up with two copies, different versions.

You say you are running Snow Leopard 10.6.3.  That version will not run the latest iTunes which requires 10.6.8  If you need iTunes 10.7 you have to be running 10.6.8
