HT201250 Avoiding Time Machine Deletions?

I want to preserve my family photos and videos on an external hard drive as I am filling up my MacBook Pro storage, meaning I need to remove some videos from my MacBook so I can add more. It sounds like Time Machine will write over old files to keep more recent updates. Is there a way to mark certain files on the external hard drive as ones that should NEVER be deleted by Time Machine? Or is there a better way? Thanks for your help.

Time Machine is not designed to serve as permanent storage. It is an incremental back-up tool. As space on the volume is needed, it will, eventually, delete the oldest back-up(s) to make room for the newest one. If you have files you want to save that are no longer on the volume that you are backing up, they will, eventually, be deleted as the archive of their original storage location gets pushed further and further back. To keep them, permanently, they need to be saved to a separate partition or volume that is not assigned to Time Machine.

Not immediately. When space starts to get tight, Time Machine will start to delete the oldest file(s) to make more room, but this won't occur for some time.

If you absolutely do not want to keep the file in your Time Machine backups at all, you do have the option to go into Time Machine, find the file, and manually delete all versions of the file from past dates.

How to avoid Time Machine deleting my previous backups?

I´ve been using Time Machine on my MacBook Pro with Lion to back it up in a WD My Book Live network drive. So far everything had gone smooth, and my files were incrementally backing up.
But recently I got a message that said the following (translating the attached pic from Spanish):
Time Machine has finished verifying your backup files. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new back up.
Click on "Start new backup" to create a new one. Previous back up history will be deleted.
Click on "Create back up later" to get a reminder tomorrow. Time Machine won´t be executing any backups until then.
I don´t want to lose my previous back ups, since they´ve got files that I don´t have now in my laptop but would like to conserve. However, with this message, it seems that if I don´t make a new one and subsequently delete previous back ups Time Machine won´t be making new ones - which is a pain.
Can anyone advise on how to overcome this, and have Time Machine carrying backing up my files without deleting previous backups?

Hello, I've just started using time machine, and I don't want it to delete my old backups when full - at least not without asking me first. is there any way to do this?

Something to consider about Time Machine is that it saves only one copy of each unique version of a file, even though it may appear in dozens or even hundreds of time stamped backup folders. Another is that it saves hourly backups only for a day & daily backups only for a month.
Both of these things save a lot of disk space compared to more conventional archival backup methods but as Bob Harris says, it is not the right tool if you want to save everything indefinitely.

Evetually yes.
If your pictures have been in the same location (same folder, same subfolder, ...) for more than a week, then copies if them will remain in your TM backups until it fills up. They are then vulnerable to being deleted.
If they've been there for less than a week, TM could delete them as early as a month from now. If they've been there for only a few hours, chances are TM will delete them tomorrow.
This is why TM is not the best tool to use to archive data that you will be deleting from your main hard drive. Copy them to a dedicated external drive, or burn DVDs.

Doesn't Time Machine delete old backups when it needs more space?

I've had time machine running for a long time now. It worked flawlessly for quite some time.
Today it gave me the error that there was not enough free space on the disk to complete the backup (the error message says something like there is 360 GB of data on the Time Machine drive already, 140 GB of free space and it would require more than that to complete my backup). I have a 500 GB Time Machine disk and my Mac has a 500 GB hard drive, so I should technically never run out of space.
The Time Machine almost acts like this is the first time I've ever backed up, which is not true. Shouldn't Time Machine delete old backups to make space for the new? What's even weirder is that if I open the "Star Wars" window of Time Machine I only see one backup from March 31, 2011, but I have been running Time Machine for well over a year now. I'm totally confused as to what happened. Any advice on how to get my Time Machine back up and running (without buying a new drive) would help!

You see only one backup in the Time Machine window because Time Machine has deleted the older backups to make space to do the current backup.
Time machine needs some working space to do its backups, and so backing up a 500GB drive onto a 500GB time machine volume is not ideal.
However, I do essentially the same thing, and what I do, when I have this problem, is exclude things from the backup.
First off, figure out what you changed. If you moved things from one partition to another, then that will cause a backup of the size of the thing that was moved. This may be why you have a large backup.
When I have this problem, I exclude large things that have changed recently from the backup. This makes the backup smaller, and means that there is less working space needed. I do this until I get a successful backup. Then I remove things, one by one, from the exclusion list, and back up after each one.
So, for instance if you just put 4 new folders on your drive, each of which s 20GB of data and they are named A, B, C and D, add all four to the exclusion list, do a backup, then remove A from the exclusion list (leaving B, C & D on it) and do a backup, and continue like this, adding 20GB of backup data each time until none of the new data is on the exclusion list and you get a completed backup.
Another possible issue, if you use multiple partitions, is that Time Machine may be keeping an obsolete backup of a partition that you previously reformatted. To see if this is the case, go into time machine (The universe interface) and go back to the most recent backup it shows. Click on your computer and see what partitions show up-- are any of them old ones that have been reformatted and renamed? You may be storing a duplicate backup because Time Machine does not realize that the disk that went away isn't coming back (because it has been reformatted as a different partition)
You can right-click on these items and remove them from your backup by sleecting "Delete all backups of...." This will free up space as well.

Time Machine deleted my old backups and crapped out midstream

I had just gotten my failing hard drive replaced, and restored from Time Machine backup. So far so good.
So a week later, I wanted to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but figured I should be responsible and run Time Machine backup again before doing the upgrade just in case something goes wrong.
The Mac has a 4TB drive, which has 2TB free. The backup drive is a 4TB external drive, which has (or had) Time Machine backups going back two years or so. It still had over a TB of space left. I clicked on Backup Now and let it run overnight. I noticed it said "Deleting old backup to make room" or something like that, which I thought was normal.
I woke up in the morning to find that Time Machine had crapped out in the middle, and said that it couldn't complete. I realized that it had deleted all my old backups. It didn't need to do that, since the only files that had changed would have been less than a GB, and it had over a TB of space to work with.
It must have thought that everything on the drive had changed since the last backup, and it wanted to backup the entire drive. As such it tried deleting all my old backups! But it failed, and stopped in the middle.
Now I have a drive that still says there is only 1.2 TB of space on the drive, but I can't see the files! Even with Tinkertool, I can't see anything beyond the one most recent backup.
Can these files be recovered? I am totally ticked that there isn't some kind of confirmation like "Are you sure you want to delete X?"
I actually need to have some of these older backups, as they include files that had been deleted before the latest backup that I may need to retrieve. Any hard drive experts out there? Any terminal commands that can make these files accessible, even if I have to retrieve them manually?

To clarify, this all happened under Snow Leopard as I had said. My profile lists Tiger, since I haven't cared to update my personal profile since using that OS, and in fact I still use Tiger among other versions. I manage a lot of users. And I never got to upgrade to Mountain Lion on this system, as explained in the post above. So I don't see the confusion.
I don't think the model of Mac makes a difference for this type of problem, but in case it does, the incident was on a 2010 Intel iMac with a 4TB hard drive and 8GB of RAM. I would have mentioned that if this was a problem with hardware specific to the model of Mac. But this is more of a universal issue.
But to stay on topic, I'm guessing my old backups are toast. But if anybody has any experience with recovering from Time Machine deleting their old backups, I would be happy to hear from them. In the meantime, I am going to try to do some old fashioned file recovery, and see what I can salvage.

Time Machine deleted all backups

Just got a TM error message saying my 3TB drive needed 1.68TB and there was only 1.3 TB available. I thought this unlikely as my target drive should only require an incremental backup (1.68TB being a full backup). So I clicked 'back up now' (daft, I know) and Time Machine deleted everything and started a brand new backup which I immediately stopped. The TM drive still says there's only 1.3TB available which means my older backups are still in there somewhere, right?
While I don't think I've anything on the backup that I need, I'm worried how this could happen - 4 months of backups just vanished instantly.
Any ideas?

First thing is there's no 'Starting standard backup' string, but I'm assuming the 'starting automatic backup' is our boy. I've deleted most of the texts where it says its 'deleting expired backups' (about 35 in all), and I've deleted other repetetive lines but I'm reluctant to delete more as I might be throwing out the baby with the bathwater. The string finished with my creating a new Time Machine backup on a separate drive ('Storage 3'). The original Time Machine backup was named 'Mac Companion'. The two drives being backed up were 'SSD' and '2TB HD'.

Backups are alright so it is not an important issue but I am wondering if something in my preferences set is wrong.

Time Machine keeps hourly backups for one day, then daily backups for a week, etc. What you are seeing is it deleting the daily backups form more than 24 hours ago. This is what it does, nothing to worry about.

Time Machine deleted old backups as disk filled up. Now I'm confused

My backup disk was full, and hence Time Machine deleted my old backup. The most important data on my Mac (for me) is my iPhoto library. As I know it, Time Machine deletes backups for files which are used less frequently. In my iPhoto library, there are some photos which I haven't opened for years. So has Time Machine deleted them?

Time Machine won't delete files that are still on your Mac, regardless of how long since you view them.
What it trashes are files that have been removed from your Mac. So, it's not an archive app. For instance, if you backed up with TM and then deleted the pics from iPhoto on your Mac (to save space or whatever) then eventually they will be deleted from TM.

Time Machine deleted all the files on my external HD

I have started a new Time Machine backup on a larger external HD.
Time Machine deleted the folders and files stored in that HD before starting the backup procedure.

This means that the drive was formatted incorrectly for use with TM and it had to reformat it. it warns you before doing so. your chances of recovering your data are not great as it may have been overwritten by TM backups. stop using the drive ASAP (turn TM off) and try data recovery software like Data Rescue II or Filesalvage.

HT3275 TIme Machine deleting files I deleted from my home drive

This seems like a very basic problem but I cant find an answer and am no longer able to use Apple Support. I am trying to erase files from my very crowded home drive. I bought an external drive and backed up all fikles there. However, now when I delete files from my home drive and plug in the external drive, Time Machine delets the files I deleted from my home drive on the external drive which defeats my purpose. Can anyone help a hopelsessly tech savvyless stranger.

Copy the files to the external drive in the Finder instead of going through Time Machine. If you want that drive to have a bootable OS, you'll need to use software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.
Time Machine backups are designed for recovery of accidentally or inadvertently deleted files. They aren't meant for primary storage of files you don't want on any other drive. In any case, drives eventually fail; anything you want to keep shouldn't be on only one drive.

Recovering files time machine deleted

Is there a way to recover files from a back up that time machine deleted? I was in the middle of recovering files then the computer just hanged so I had to force shutdown. When I booted up again, I can't find any of my documents in ALL of the time machine backups previously created.

You might be able to use SubrosaSoft FileSalvage to recover the files. You can run it in demo mode first to see what files, if any, it will be able to recover from the disk. With the restricted privileges of the TM disk I'm not sure if it will work but worth a try.
Sometimes it might be best to not force quit but let it run for what may seem a extraordinarily long time. Were you about to use any other application during that time? If it happens again run Activity Monitor to see what's taking up the computer's effort. It just might be chugging along and not actually hung. TM is CPU heavy.

So I had all my stuff backed up to December 23 on an external hard drive with Time Machine, then I deleted it all so that the next automatic backup didn't have any of these older files. Unfortunately, you can't, since they have been permanently deleted and the drive space has been overwritten with new data.
