HT201250 Deleting files once backed up

Once something has been backed up by timemachine, can I delete it off my harddrive or will that make those files disappear during the next backup?
Just trying to make more room on my harddrive.

this is my first mac I've ever owned and my first attempt at using timemachine, so I just wondering how it works.
Yes, the files are very important in that they are my career. The external drive I have is 5TB -- I feel as though that should be enough to hold everything.
But anyways, I was just wondering if time machine just resaved over each backup everytime. It is my understanding that with timemachine, if my computer crashes, I can just plug it in and it restores everything back to the way I had it all setup.
However, I was also hoping to use the external drive a one of my storage methods in that I cannot keep all of the files I have on actual MacBook Pro harddrive.

Does Time Machine delete files in back-ups that are deleted on my Mac?  IOW....if I need to restore a whole back-up, I don't want to restore previously deleted files.

Not immediately. When space starts to get tight, Time Machine will start to delete the oldest file(s) to make more room, but this won't occur for some time.
if I need to restore a whole back-up, I don't want to restore previously deleted files.
You won't if you choose to restore from a backup that occurred after the date that you deleted the file.
If you absolutely do not want to keep the file in your Time Machine backups at all, you do have the option to go into Time Machine, find the file, and manually delete all versions of the file from past dates.

  • Deleted files on back-up disk

    Hi,
I've backed up my aperture files onto my new LaCie external HD 4 times now. Last time, I deleted several old images from Aperture before backing up. Now, when I click on the LaCie HD icon on my desktop, I see a new folder called "d2Quadra Deleted Images". (d2Quadra is the name I gave my new back up drive). I guess I have 3 related questions:
    1) After files are backed up from my desktop HD onto an external backup drive, and are later deleted from my desktop HD, are they also deleted from my backup drive the next time I back up? (I assume they are.)
    2) If, in fact, they are deleted from the back up drive, does the back up drive keep a copy of them in a deleted files folder?
    3) If so, it seems a waste of disk space--can I occasionally delete the folder (or, at least, the folders inside that folder) that (I assume) Aperture created called, "d2 Quadra Deleted Images?"
I'm reluctant to touch anything inside the LaCie icon based on previous advice I've been given in this forum. thank you, Mike

  • Can I delete files once I compress them into a zip file?

I am trying to get more space in my hard drive. One of the suggestions is to compress files I don't use. Once I compress them into an archive zip file, it looks like the files are still there.  I'm thinking that I should delete the original files but am afraid to do so. What percentage space do I save when I compress?

What percentage space do I save when I compress?
That depends on the type of file. Files that are already compressed, such as most media files, won't get smaller, and they may get larger. Text files will compress by about half, on average, but that will probably save a negligible amount of space.
The right solution to your problem is to move the files you don't often need to an external hard drive. That drive must be backed up along with the internal one.

  • HT201250 Since time machine backed up my computer does that mean I can delete files so I can increase storage space on my hard drive?

Since time machine backed up my computer does that mean I can delete files so I can increase storage space on my hard drive?

    NO!
Time Machine is not an Archival Backup. It will keep files for a while, but if it needs the space, it will delete files that no longer exist on the hard drive.
Get a couple external drives and move the files to both of them.

  • If I use Time Machine to back-up my files, can I delete files from my Mac Air?

My Macbook Air hard drive is full, and I want to move photos to an external drive.  Once Time Machine has done a back-up, can I simply delete files from the Macbook Air?

If you can attach an external drive to the MacBook Air, you could move your image library to the external drive, then configure Time Machine to back up both your MacBook Air and the external drive.
This way, you would have your "originals" 'on one drive and "backups" on another drive. That is what backups are all about. If you move your images to the Time Capsule, they will be deleted sooner or later when Time Machine is looking for more backup space. In the meantime, even if you have the images on the Time Capsule....you will have no backups in the event of a problem with the Time Capsule or drive you are using for Time Machine.

If the Mac's firmware was updated, you can try this Internet Recovery:
Hold down Command + Option + R during restart or bootup; hold until you see a spinning globe (takes up to 10 minutes). Once in the Utilities window, use Disk utility to wipe the drive, then return to the window and choose to reinstall OS X. If that works, the OS will be installed without being tied to an Apple ID.
FWIW, if the firmware was updated, you will not be able to use the Snow leopard disk to install - I just did several tests and it does not work. You can, however, possibly install the SL onto an external drive and then clone it to the internal or (if you have a clone), boot from that and clone it back - I just tested that as well.
If the firmware was not updated, then you can use the SL install disk.

  • HT201077 Is there a way to delete files locally, on iPad, after they have been backed up in iCloud, without losing any files?

Is there a way to delete files locally, on iPad, after they have been backed up in iCloud, without losing any files? Because iCloud is seeming like it actually doesn't back up anything.. Just clogs up all storage space on every device with duplicate images/videos. I am looking for a delete when backed up feature. Does that exist?

  • Switching back to delete file from PC?

I recently selected a few files that I wanted to remove from iTunes, but didn't want to delete from my hard drive.
Now I want to switch back and delete files from my hard drive, but when I select a track and click 'delete' it doesn't give me the choice of deleting from iTunes or from hard drive.
How do I get the option to delete from my hard drive back?

  • Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original location - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it

Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original locations - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it - also, when transferring large amounts of files it becomes a very large problem remembering which files were transferred and which not.

You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them.

  • Can't delete files backed up in Time Machine

I use Time Machine to back up my MacBook Pro to NAS on my home wifi. I have a large file in my downloads folder that I have moved elsewhere and I don't need backed up. When I enter Time Machine's 'Star Wars' window and select the file and choose to delete all instances of it from the drop-down from the 'cog' icon in the Time Machine Finder, then I OK the warning that I can't undo the delete. Then - nothing happens! The file remains there! My question is: how does one delete files from Time Machine?
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

... Can anyone recommend a brand of NAS, such as Synology, that works properly with TM backups?
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected either to the source Mac, or a Mac on your local network.
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using third party NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless in the dire circumstances in which they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

  • IWeb '08 will delete files from .mac. BACK UP your custom files!

...obliterated everything in Web/RSS and Web/Sites/iWeb.
Just a word of caution if you keep roll-back versions of hand-customized HTML in there with your site files.
By the same token, the new file structure & naming scheme is less hideous. Single folders for scripts and media, etc. (at least for the podcast layout)

No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted.

  • How can I get back deleted files to my iPod?

First of all, I tried to upgrade my iPod's iOS 4.2.1 to 5. I followed the steps in the following page: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4972. Unfortunately, I unsucceeded as the iOS stayed the same but I lost all of my downloaded music and video files. So, my question is how to restore deleted files? I could get my files back by adding manually them from my computer to iTunes and then to iPod, but the thing is that I've changed my computer and all the music files in my iPod were from my old computer. I've tried to find a solution on my own, but it has been hopeless so far. Please, any kind of help is appreciated!

    Which iPod do you have?
Some iPods can only be upgraded to 4.2.1
