HT201250 G Drive Mini Space missing

I only have about 400gigs stored on my 1TB G mini hdd yet it only shows 200gigs as being available. Why?

It can be that easy assuming your backup is either a TimeMachine backup or a clone. Two things to consider - at the moment it looks like 128GB is plenty for you but remember that by default your computer is the repository for your iPhone apps, music, video etc. Also your music and video collection is likely to grow. There's nothing worse than a portable computer tied down to an external drive. So consider the 256GB model.
Second you'll need to reserialize most (all?) of your software and Office is one of those 'activated' programs so you may wind up having to call Microsoft to get the activation transferred to the new computer. It isn't painful. Also before you make the switch go through your iMac and deactivate iTunes, the App Store, and any other activations that can be done manually (Adobe).
Your iMac may be worth more than you think. I put my wife's 2007 iMac up for sale on the bulletin board at the local grocery for $500 earlier this spring and within a week I had two buyers. It went for my asking price - that's a 24" iMac that had never been upgraded since its original purchase!

  • Hard drive space missing?

There seems to be hard drive space missing on my yoga 13.
The C: drive had a capacity of 97,2 gb and the D: drive has a capacity of 3,99 gb, which adds up to just over 100 gb. But the computer is supposed to come with a 128 gb SSD - where is the rest of the capacity?

I found the extra four partitions, and am not hard over the extra 20G. I see (from other posts) where the partitions belong to. But a question I asked on another thread (New-to-Yoga-11s-How-to-start), perhaps not as eloquent; should I use the OKR HOTFIX? Will it give me some of the 20G back? Will it mess with the OKR system?

  • Bad File Descriptor in /dev/fd/3, and 94Gb of disk space missing

I noticed a few days ago, possibly as the result of a recent kernel panic, that I have a large chunk of hard drive space missing. The Finder reports that I have approximately 89Gb of free space, but using "df" reports that there is approximately 178Gb free. Using "du" doesn't report any unexpected huge files, so I tried running GrandPerspective. In addition to the usual file usage and free space, this shows a single 94Gb block of "miscellaneous used space".
I then booted into Single User mode to run fsck on the startup drive. This reported several errors, and took 3 passes to repair the directory structure, but didn't recover the missing space. I have subsequently run TechTool Pro and DiskWarrior on the startup drive (both of which found various minor errors), but the 94Gb still refuses to show itself.
I then tried using "find" to look for single large files, using "sudo find / -size +94371840" (anything larger than 90Gb), and I get the following errors:
    find: /dev/fd/3: Bad file descriptor
    find: /dev/fd/4: Not a directory
    find: /dev/fd/5: Not a directory
After searching Google, a "Bad file descriptor" error points to an inode issue, that fsck cannot fix, but I don't know enough (read: anything) about inodes to risk running the clri command to zero the problem inode.
Short of blanking the startup disk and installing from scratch (not an attractive option), is there anything I can do to fix the broken inode and recover the missing space?
    Any help appreciated.

This is not an error and always happens with find unless you exclude the /dev hierarchy from the search. (Interestingly this seems to have gone away with 10.5??)
To locate your missing space, try WhatSize. Another alternative which I have not used personally is Disk Inventory X.
As an additional point, with 10.4 it is actually better to use Disk Utility, since it does more than fsck: Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck, quote:
Note: If you're using Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you should use Disk Utility instead of fsck, whenever possible.

  • Will the G-Drive Mini work with the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter?

I'm closing in on buying a new MacBook Pro, but the lack of FireWire on the new retina models is worrying me. I've seen a lot of negative responses in regard to the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, specifically in regards to the G-Raid mini - most of them noting it's the dual drive that's the issue.
So would any of you happen to know - does a G-Drive mini work well with the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter? I will be doing a lot of heavy video editing if that makes any difference.

I found out after purchasing a Retina MacBook Pro that you can in fact use the G-RAID Mini, the way to do it is to have two Thunderbolt to FireWire adapters, plug in the first one to the drive and the computer, wait for the drive to start clicking, and then plug the other cable between the computer and the G-RAID on the second port.
This obviously only works if you have a rMBP as you need the two Thunderbolt ports.

  • G-Drive Mini disconnects itself

    Hello everyone,
This has happened a few times, too many to ignore. When I leave my MBP on and go away for a while, when I come back and take it out of sleep mode, or just the screen saver, I get that message when you unplug a device without properly eject it first. Always with the G-Drive Mini. But when I open a Finder window, it's still there and I can use it.
Do you have any idea what might be causing this?
    Thanks a lot.

When i do, its only showing my big gdrive, a connected server, and my hd. But not the mini.
One other detail i should add, if it changes anything, is last night i tried hooking up the g-drive mini to my airport express just to see if it would work wirelessly (after soon finding out express doesnt support that). Having to use a USB cord, I needed to plug it into the wall with the ac-adapter.
Thats when I went to plug it back into my laptop and wouldn't mount from that moment forward.

  • G-drive mini and mobile don't mount

For some reason the G-Drive mini and the G-Drive mobile bus powered drives do not mount on my Power Mac properly. I connect them directly to my Firewire 800 port and they always act up or freeze up. I plug other bus powered portable firewire drives (like my LaCie rugged) and they work fine. I only have this issue with the G-Technology drives. Again, I'm plugging directly into the computer to try to get a direct current. Does anyone have an idea why this is?

  • Link to Network Drive with Spaces

I need to create a link in SharePoint 2010 that points to a network drive with spaces in the title. SharePoint substitutes %20 for spaces, but I need the space character.
    For example:
    file:///\\company\foldername   works
file:///\\company\folder name   does not work, it becomes
    file:///\\company\folder%20name
Has anyone run into this issue before?

    Hi Andy,
20% represents space in url encoding and it is hardcoded. I don’t think it is better to remain space character in the link.

  • G-Drive Mini won't mount

    Hello all,
    A little back story:
I used a 160gb G-Drive Mini with my 15 Al Powerbook G4 (w/OSX 10.4.11) extensively for a couple years with a firewire 400 cable. One day the drive's firewire port crapped out, and since the machine doesnt have the power to run the drive on USB, I figured out that hooking up both USB and firewire cables worked for mounting the drive. (I assume the firewire port was powering the drive and USB was working for data transfer) Time went on, got used to using the drive like this, got fed up, one day decided to send it in for repair, got my drive back and it still wouldnt mount when using just a firewire cable, sent the drive back again and they sent me a brand new one which i just got today.
Drive still wont mount with just the firewire 400. The drive powers up just fine. I can hear it spin when plugged in, but never mounts. It's also not present in disk utility or system profiler. Tried different cables.
Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks.

Hi, roland, and welcome to AppleDiscussions. Sounds to me like insufficient power from the FireWire port alone. That's a rare problem with FireWire drives and Powerbooks, though it's much more the rule than the exception with USB drives and Powerbooks. If you choose to keep using this particular brand and model of drive, you'll probably have to use both the USB and FireWire ports to get enough power to it. It apparently requires considerably more power than most bus-powered FireWire drives do, and/or your Powerbook is putting out considerably less than most other Powerbooks.

  • G-tech G-drive mini external h.d. won't turn on

I have a new G-Tech G-Drive Mini (500 GB) external hard drive which was just fine the first time I had it connected to my iMac. I got it all set up, backed up some files, put it away and that was that.
Today I got it out, turned the power switch to ON but nothing happened. It won't turn ON. Connected to the computer by an 800-firewire or not, it won't turn ON. No green light, no nothing.
I realize this isn't a Mac question per se, but I bought it at an Apple Store (it's now past the return date) and it's the weekend and G-Tech is closed. And I am VERY frustrated.
    Any advice?

  • G Drive mini External Drive

    Hi,
I just bought my first external drive... a G drive mini portable and it seems to work fine.
I just had a question about noise. Is it normal for these ext drives to make noises all the time. It seems to constantly be making small static-like noises, sometimes more , sometimes less.
    Thanks alot.

If there isn't a fan in the enclosure it shouldn't make much noise. Is it a 7200rpm or 5400rpm drive? The 7200s due make a little more noise.
I would contact g-tech support about your concerns.
