HT201250 How can I tell when a backup is complete?

I don't keep my Time Machine external HD connected to my computer all the time.  I only connect it every other month.  When I do, I activate the Time Machine back up process.  I can see the many desk top images going back in space through infinity (very cool).  Just wondering, is there any thing that indicates when a backup cycle is complete?  Also, can I do research and send emails while the Time Machine backup is taking place?

all you need to do it right click on the time machine icon once your external hdd is connected and select backup now.  No need to actually go into time machine.  You will see when the backup is complete, just right click again on the time machine icon and it will tell you when ti was last backed up.  And yes, you can use your mac as normal when running a time machine backup.

To check that a backup was made correctly, open System Preferences > Time Machine and check the hour when the last backup was made. You can do the same selecting the Time Machine icon on the menu bar

If there is a legal issue I am sure Apple would properly respond if the records were subpoenaed, but short of that I do not know of a way.

Try a Reset - hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 15 seconds.
Have you read the User Guide?
Unless the charge indicator has bee turned off you see the percentage charged in the top right of the screen.

  • What is iMovie doing after update?  How can I tell when it's done?

"Updating" a whole lot of old iMovie events to the new iMovie 10 library.
When I tried to trash the old events the OS warned that they were "still in use".  No problem, I thought.  Shut down iMovie, and then trash the old events.
Well, when you try to shut down iMovie it tells you there are still "tasks being completed in the background" and that if you shut down they won't ever be completed.
    so......
What are these tasks?  (iMovie 10, after a big import, is using about 20-25% of a CPU continuously, according to Activity Monitor)
If I do shut down despite the warning what are the consequences?
How can I tell when it's done and I can safely shut down iMovie? (I guess I sould wait and see if it ever stops warning me).

Did you read the manual? It's usually explained on what does all this stuff mean on the screen. I don't think the manual that comes with the Micro isn't the player's guide but if you install the software I think, you can look it up by going through Start>Program Files>Creative>Creative Zen Micro>User Guide. This is the default directory.
Anyway, yes your Micro is charging and if you want to play your music on your MP3 player while it's charging you can use Nomad Explorer to play the music on your computer or use Creative Mediasource to play the music and hear it from your MP3 player. You can't control your MP3 player so just use your computer. It's not that hard to learn.

how can I tell when a txt message has been received and opened ?

Correction: How will I know when a SMS or MMS text message has been received and opened when the person I'm texting has an Android phone ? My last phone was Android and had a setting that notified me when my sent texts were received by someone. Just got my iPhone about a week ago.  Totally different.

  • How can I tell when a video has captions?

Is there a way (an icon or something) to tell when a video has captions? I've paid for several videos only to find out that none of them has captions. How can I tell whether a video has captions before I buy it?
A related question-- Are there any videos in the store now that do have captions? How can I find them?
    --Gil

I have the exact same question. One of the main reasons I pre-ordered Leopard for launch-day delivery was that I thought that iTunes and the new iPods would now be able to play captioned videos. I know that it is supposed to work, but I can't find anything in the iTunes Store that says that it has captions. Is there some way to tell, or are there just no videos available yet in the iTunes Store that have captions?

  • How can I tell when my monitor calibration is "right"?

I have had good success with the built-in Mac calibration routine in the past with my Viewsonic CRT. It seems to work OK with my 20" Cinema Display, and another flat screen, but I have trouble with the first step of the calibration settings - there isn't any position on the left slider that looks right. I recently got a Spyder 3 Pro monitor calibrator and the results are SO different from my Mac calibration I don't know what to do next. I had good results before.
How can I tell if the Spyder profile, or the Mac profile is "right"?
Does the Spyder work properly with the Cinema Display?
With the Spyder I am using 2.2 and 6500 as starting points. I have important projects going to press so I need to know that I am sending out good files.
What is the final standard of "rightness" when it comes to monitor calibration?

There is not one standard because it depends on your output. For you, it sounds like the standard is that your screen gives you a rendering as close as possible to the press proofing standard that your company and your clients sign off on. In other words, a neutral gray and certain colors look the same on screen and on the print on your proof under your standard lighting. Your starting points sound OK, but for example, they would be wrong if your lightboxes are D50.
It's highly unlikely that the built-in profile is better than the Spyder. A hardware sensor is far more objective and accurate than the human eye.
I'm mostly repeating stuff I read in Real World Color Management so if your paycheck really does depend on this stuff you might read it or any other color management book. ColorWiki and the Chromix newsletter are other good resources for this.

  • ITunes 12-Please please restore side bar functions for playlists -and how can i tell when and if it is safe to "eject" devices after synching

    ITUNES 12-4points

    2) How do i know when devices can be ejected following synch--no visible drop down ?
    3) How can i change the fonts and font sizes of the library-over and above the noddy large/small toggle in preferences
    4) Look forward to a proper Apple update which includes  full functions of iTunes radio. Hurry up with the latter-Spotify is overtaking you guys!

How do i know when devices can be ejected following synch--no visible drop down ?
I can only tell you based on what I see w/ my iPhone...
When I plug in my iPhone I get the following icon on the top bar:
If I click on that (that's when it turns blue), I get a sidebar.  At the top I see this while it is syncing:
The circle-arrows spin.  Once the sync is finished, I see this:
I then know the sync is over and I click on the Eject icon that replaced the circle-arrows.
    Are you seeing something different?
