HT201250 How do I reduce the 'Backups' Data on my Macbook HD and how to reduce the parameters of Time Machine?

My Macbook Pro is using 320GB on "Backups" and Time Machine is using 640GB. It just seems ridiculous, considering I everything else only takes up 77GB combined. How to I get rid of a good chunk of it from Macbook HD and also how can I reduce the Time Machine parameters, maybe so it starts deleting back up data sooner?

If you run TM you don't really need local snapshots so if you need the disk space you can disable them in Terminal by copying & p;asting this command at the prompt
sudo tmutil disablelocal
Press return. You will be prompted for your password, it will be invisible.
To undo this, rerun it with "enablelocal" instead of "disablelocal".
In TM preferences you can choose to exclude items to the backup.

My project in imovie says source unavailable after I moved the events to the backup drive. It is connected and shows up in the events library. I can see the pictures but they won't play without the source. What do I do.

I moved it because I did not have room on my hard drive to import my latest video. I take videos my grandkids basketball games then edit them as projects. I don't have room to move the whole events library back to my hard drive. Can I move part of it at a time.
I filled up my 1 TB back up drive so got a 3TB to move my video projects to. Do I have to move both the i photo videos and the projects to the 3 TB drive together some how. When can I delete them off the hard drive .
I moved all the i photo library to the 3 TB drive and deleted them out of i photo. That is 87 GB which I don't have room for on my hard drive.
I think when I use the export movie to my hard drive it works but will I still be able to edit it later if I want. Is it best to do quick time or i tunes if I use the export feature.

I have recently changed from a macbook to macbook pro and all my files were saved on time machine but some won't open. How do I open them?

Are you trying to open the backup files via the Finder or an application?  If so, that's not how you should access your backups -- use the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
How did you get your stuff on the new Mac?
It sounds like you may have skipped the offer to transfer it when your Mac first started up, created a user account, then used the Migration Assistant app instead.  If so, that may be the problem;  doing it that way means you end up with an extra user account, and can lose permission to files on other volumes, especially backups.
Please clarify just what you're seeing, and whether you still have the old Mac.

How do I back up my documents from my Macbook on iCloud? or can I only use time machine or external HD?
I think I have missed something in trying to read all of the pages on apple site about icloud.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't back up a computer to iCloud.
You can use any back up software, you should always back up to a different drive.

after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

  • Can somebody tell me how to transfer iPhone/iPod backup data from my old computer to a new one?

Is it possible for me to transfer the backup data of my iPod touch and iPhone from my old computer to a new one? I don't own any Macs, only PCs. My backup data are saved on a PC (desktop) which has Windows XP SP2 as its OS and I am planning to transfer my iPod/iPhone backup data to a laptop with Windows 7 as its OS. Is it possible? If so, can someone tell me the step-by-step procedure on how to do this, including how to find the folder where my backup data is stored. I would be very much grateful. Thanks a lot for those who may be able to help me with this matter.  ^_^
P.S. I am planning to use an external hard disk to transfer my backup data to the new computer.

Ah, I see. In that case your life will be much easier if you convert your library back into a portable format before you attempt to migrate it.
The normal location for the iTunes Library.itl file is the iTunes folder at <User's Music>\iTunes though it is possible that you have previously moved the library separately from moving the media folder, or you could have your media stored outside the designated iTunes Media folder.
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library is considered to be portable. You can rearrange things to make a split library portable by taking a number of small steps which don't break the library.
Before you start any media files that are outside of the designated media folder will need to be consolidated. N.b. Your iTunes Media folder location should be on the target drive that you are going to build the portable library on. If you have the bulk of your library is stored in a folder on an external drive that is not currently designated as the iTunes Media folder then change this property (Edit > Preferences > Advanced) before consolidating.
If the library is in the old style layout then it should ideally be be upgraded to iTunes Media Organisation (Library > Organise Library > Rearrange files in the folder <Media Folder>) to ensure that iPod Games, Mobile Applications etc. are brought inside the media folder.
    The basic non-fatal manipulations are:
You can connect to an alternate set of library files by holding down Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) when starting iTunes.
You can move the library files to a new location as long as the media stays put.
You can move the library files and the media together if the media folder is a direct subfolder of the library folder.
If you have already moved/copied the media content from a subfolder of the library folder to a different location then you only need to copy the library files for it to appear as if you have moved the entire library in the way allowed above. I.e. just copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder.
You can rename the media folder to iTunes Media (if it isn't already) if the media folder is inside the library folder.
iTunes uses the name of the folder holding the library files as the window title. Having made a library "portable" you may need to take a final step of renaming the library folder to iTunes or, if the library files have ended up at the root of a drive, moving all of the library files and content folders into a new folder called iTunes.
After each change you need to open, test and close the relevant library before attempting another change. If a change broke the library, undo it or revert to using the previous set of library files.
In essence all you need to do to make your library portable is copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder on the external/secondary drive and use the hold-down-shift/option-when-starting-iTunes method to connect to it. Other manipulations may be required to normalize the library so that the library and media folders have standard names.

  • How do I upgrade to snow leopard and then restore my files from my time machine HDD backup...without losing any data or reinstalling leopard (10.5)?

How do I upgrade to snow leopard (from leopard 10.5) and then restore my files from my time machine HDD backup...without losing any data or reinstalling leopard (10.5)?

Hello, it's great you have a backup, but 10.6 should just Install 10.6 system files over the top of 10.5 system files, & leave all your data intact on the drive.

  • HT4847 How i can download my backup data? And how to manage the data on i Cloud?

How i can download my backup data? And how to manage the data on i Cloud?

You can't download an iCloud backup, except to restore it to your device should you ever need to.
iCloud data can be managed within the apps on your iPad.  Any changes to the data within the apps corresponding to the data you are syncing with iCloud will take place in iCloud.  You can also manage some of this data on icloud.com from your computer.
This article explains ways to manage your iCloud storage space, should you need to reduce you iCloud storage: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847.

  • How can I transfer/merge the backup-data of one iphone onto another iphone?

I have two iphones and want to merge the backup-data from one to the other without destroying any data on the new one. How can I do it and will this data be replaced automatically or merged?
    Thanks for your help!
    Toni

As long as you use the same account, you can sync the same apps, contacts, music and other media content. Set up at least one contact and event on your new phone, to be able to merge your contacts and calendars. You can't transfer settings of your 3rd party apps, because this data is stored in your backup, and restoring from your backup will erase your new phone's data.
    See also: "About backups" http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
You can also transfer your mail account settings using the option in the info pane in itunes, as well as the option to replace contacts, calendars, bookmarks and notes during the following sync.

  • I forgot the backup encryption password in iTunes how can I get my backup data back?

I forgot the backup encryption password in iTunes how can I get my backup data back?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • How can i view my iphone contents on PC. How can i view my backup data in itunes. How can i see my SMS and contact on PC

    Hi,
Can anybody help me out on the follwoing questions
how can i view my iphone contents on PC. How can i view my backup data in itunes. How can i see my SMS and contact on PC

The data isn't actually stored in iTunes.  iTunes is like a card catalog that allows you to access information from the various places that it's stored on the computer.  SMS and contact info will be viewable in whatever program you sync contact information.  The backup actually keeps the files, but doesn't make them viewable, I'm pretty sure.  You can only see the info you've actually synced.

  • I just plugged my iphone in to download some pix to my computer and my phone is now showing a plug with the itunes icon and its telling me I have to restore my phone and will lose all my data. *** is going on and how can I go back?

i just plugged my iphone in to download some pix to my computer and my phone is now showing a plug with the itunes icon and its telling me I have to restore my phone and will lose all my data. *** is going on and how can I go back?

"I have logged in to my itunes account on a different computer and none of my purchased music is showing up."
Correct.  it does not magially appear in other places.  It will only be where you put it.
"I also have plugged my iphone in to get updates but it says I will lose all media and apps if I don't update on the computer where  I sync everything. "
Correct as well.  Iphone will sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content.
You need to copy everything ( itunes library/contacts/pics/calendars/files/docs) from the old computer, or your backup copy of the old one, to the new one.

  • How can I access my backup Data on my Time Capsule HD?!

I have 1.77 TB of Data but cannot access!?
After having problems with several programs crashing, I had do do a complete reset, on my macbookpro.
I erased everything on my macbookpro's HD and did a complete reset begininng with reloading OSX-Maverick.
I have also manually reinstalled all my apps, hoping to avoid reinstalling to problems causing the crashes.
Everything seems to be working fine now... with the exception that I can't seem to access the backup data on my Time Machine.
I have tried using the disk utility also, but after a 1 min of trying to access the disk, it stops reponding and I have to force quite Disk Utility.
I need help! The back up data is my life!;-0

Did you use TM since you upgraded to Mavericks??
That could cause damage to the TM backups.
I am really unsure how to advise you on this one.. but if you need the backups you have to take heroic measures..
I would not use Mavericks.. if the backups were done under Mountain Lion.. get an external drive for the computer and load ML on it.. then get another disk and do a full restore of the backups to a different location.
See the restore info in Pondini for help.
    Q14-17 here.
Or boot with the original DVD and use TM to restore .. as per instructions here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Use Setup Assistant .. or if all else fails use migration assistant.
It may even be worth archiving the TC before you begin so you know all the data is preserved and Mavericks is not just going to wipe it out as soon as TM starts.
