I have just got a new Macbook and want to transfer the photos from iphoto on an existing iMac onto it.
I have the iMac backed up to Timemachine but don't want to clone the new Macbook from the iMac settings/files, just copy across the iPhotos.
Thanks for any advice you can provide.

  • How to restore files without TIme Machine

Help! Anyone know how to restore files on tiger? I lost my WHOLE library of photos! And I don't have back ups. :'(
I was running short of disk space, so I decided to clean up some unnecessary files on my disk. I once imported all my photos from iPhoto to Aperture. Since I usually use iPhoto, I decided to delete all the photos from Aperture library. But the next time when I opened my iPhoto, I found the photos in iPhoto library were also deleted!!! Now there are only thumbnails of all the photos!
Please! Anyone know how to restore the photos on Tiger? I can't afford to lose all my photos. :'(

    Try Subrosasoft's FileSalvage.
If that doesn't work try Prosoft Data Rescue II
If that doesn't work, take it to a professional such as http://www.drivesavers.com/
And in the future always keep backing up your data as my FAQ* explains:

  • How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks

How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks. I know the data is there but seems unaccessable because I may have changed the Computer or Owner name. Is there any way to fix that now?

    Hi Linc,
my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD.  February 7th  2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

  • HT2966 I changed a repeating event and this ****** DELETED 10 events. How to restore this from timemachine backup?

On the iPhone you can change how many times an event is repeated. I changed that number from 10 to 11 and it automatically deleted all my 10 events and replaced the valuable notes with *nothing*.
I do daily backups with timemachine, but cant seem to find a way to restore the events - since I already made a lot of changes today.
next question: is there an ical alternative, which is actually safe to use for business?

For anyone else that may be in a similar situation, I can confirm that this does actually work.
I am unsure why I was not able to mount the original sparseimage that I copied to the USB drive before, but I have gone through the entire process again and I could successfully mount the TM sparseimage onto my MacBook and restore files from within it using TimeMachine to my Mac.
This is a Disaster Recovery solution only needed for if both my NAS and Macbook get stolen or damaged so I am happy with this solution for now.
I will try the restore process several more times from my monthly backups to reassure myself that the first failure to mount the sparse image was an anomaly.
This is the process that I have tested:
Configure MacBook to backup to TimeMachine Service running on QNAP NAS device.
Perform regular backup of QNAP NAS Device (Linux) including the TimeMachine backup data to an external USB drive with encryption enabled and store this device safely off-site
In time of loss of both NAS and MacBook, Time Machine data can be recovered to another Mac without the need of the NAS  using the following process:
Mount the external drive containing the backup of the NAS filesystem (ext4) which is encrypted onto a Linux host so it is readable - use the cryptsetup luksOpen options to access the encrypted filesystem then mount it.
Mount a n empty HFS+ formatted USB drive  on the Linux host
Use Rsync to copy the sparsebundle from the external NAS drive backup disk to the root of the USB Drive
Insert the HFS+ formatted USB containing the sparesbundle into the Mac's USB port
Double click the sparsebundle to mount it onto the Mac as a Volume
Using Alt button and the TimeMachine icon, select use alternative backup disk and you should see the TM backup in the sparsebundle
Enter TimeMachine and you should be able to restore any/all files
Hope that helps someone else and thanks to LaPastenague for pointing me in the direction of some of the answers I needed.

  • How to restore files to crashed iMac without Time Machine.

My iMac crashed and I am about to try and recover it with the Recovery partition.  A month ago a pet somehow knocked my Time Machine disk off my desk and I hadn't replaced it.  I have my files back up via BackBlaze as well, but don't know how I am going to incorporate (restore) those files in the proper places later.
Best practices or a utility is what I am looking for.
    Thanks,
    John

Reinstalling OS X is easy. But unless you have a restorable backup of your files there's little you can do to restore them. Read your BackBlaze documentation to find out how you restore a backup made with it.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

Hi I'm helping my friend.  We backed up her old laptop's hard drive  to a new Canvio 1Texternal hard drive, but backed up the whole system.  The system is now defunct.  It ran Win 7. This is three weeks later and we have a new 17" Toshiba laptop running WIN 8.1. I can't seem to find a way to restore just her FIles and Folders to the new system.  I do not want to overwrite the Win 8.1 operating system so do not want to do a full restore. Her Files and FOlders are important to her so I would appreciate your adice as to how to restore just that data. I can't find anything in HELP or on this forum that addresses this issue.

  • How open a file and not showing window?

I write a script to do some work automatic,
for Indesign script, its application open method could open a file and not showing window,
the open method has a parameter [ShowingWindow] (if true, show the document window).
That is good a feature for me.
But with Illustrator, the application open method hasn't the same feature.
    Open
    (files as String,
    [documentColorSpace as AiDocumentColorSpace],
    [options as Object])
and for OpenOptions properties, there is not useful information for me.
Is there any other methods could do that?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank for your reply.

  • How to restore files from Trash

    Hi all,
Somehow there does not seem to be a "restore button" in my trash. I can copy my files manually from the trash to another folder, but I will have to remember which folder that was. How can I restore the file to it's original location automatically?
I could swear that the restore button was once there. Or am I confusing OS X with XP?
    Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards, Hans.

If you press COMMAND-Z (Undo) immediately after placing a file into the Trash, then the file will be returned to its original location. However, the undo function is only applicable to the item most immediately placed in the Trash, otherwise it will not work, nor will it work for items placed there previously. In effect it's a one-time deal.
There are some third-party utilities that may add more to the undo Trash functionality, and you can look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How to restore files from Carbonite

My computer crashed and I had to reinstall my software. I previously had not backed things up on Mozbackup, but Carbonite backed my files up. now, can you tell me the procedure to restore my addresses and other files from carbonite's backup?

You'll need to restore the Thunderbird profile from the backup.
Check this article for more information on the profile location for MacOS.

How exactly this is done with Carbonite I have no idea.

  • How to restore files after mavericks install

Hi I just installed the mavericks on my mac book pro. But before that, I backed up my files using Time Machine in an external HDD. Now, I how do I restore all my documents? Is there something I missing here? Or should I say goodbye to all my documents?!!!

    Hey erwinoliva,
Thanks for the question. I’m glad to hear you backed up your files using Time Machine, that’s always a great practice. If you need to restore your files from Time Machine, see the following:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Restoring your entire system from a backup
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
Hold down the Command and R keys at startup to start the computer from the Recovery system. The Recovery menu that appears includes the option to restore from a Time Machine backup. If you are using Mac OS X Snow Leopard, start your computer from the installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.
Note: If "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac" appears when restoring a backup that was made on a different Mac, follow the onscreen instructions. If you are trying to restore your backup from one Mac to another Mac, use Migration Assistant to transfer data from the backup instead, as described in the next section.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Clean install- how to restore files

After originally upgrading to Mavericks, I realized that I had many old files still in the System/Library from prior operating systems.  I decided to do a clean install to clean things up and remove potentially problematic old software.  I made an bootable USB drive, wiped my hard drive and did a clean install of Mavericks.  I then used my Time Machine backup and Migration Assistant to restore Documents and what I think was labeled as something like Settings.  I manually installed the applications.  I think this may have been a waste of time.  When I look in the home Library folder, it has all the application files and preferences from apps that I did not re-install.  So I don't think I actually ended up doing any cleaning at all.  This is frustrating and I don't understand what happened.  Was it the Settings choice that brought all that stuff back?
PS- The clean install did not install the three iWorks applications that I thought were a free part of Mavericks.  Why not?

I checked and this is even stranger.  There is a second account, and that one has all my old applications (including ones not installed with Mavericks), but not the restored documents from Time Machine.  How did those apps get there?  I specifically told Migration Assistant not to install applications.
