  • How to restore a Time machine backup and get a recovery partition?

    Hi,
    I'm quite confused!
I restored from a Time Machine backup and then setup boot camp (and removed that partition a while back) and now I don't have a recovery partition. (Can't enable File Vault and
    bash-3.2# diskutil list /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD

       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            87.4 GB    disk0s2
My new MacBook Pro didn't come with any CDs.
Apparently I need the recovery partition to reinstall Lion from the internet.
"Recovery HD offers on-disk recovery tools, allows you to restore from Time Machine backups, reinstall OS X Lion over the Internet..."
The recommended solution from Apple seems to be reinstall with your OSX 10.6 CD (which I don't have) and then upgrade to Lion (which seems like a PITA).
    Info from : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
What process should I follow to restore my recovery partition and apply the current state of the machine from a backup?
(the process should not involve anything I don't have, like USB memory sticks, Lion CDs, etc....)
Supplementary questions which are only relevant if the answer is "you can't" (which would seem to be a major bug!) :
Or is there a clever method to install a recovery partition onto an existing disk (which clearly has space for it)? I have searched for it but all the results I found have either not mentioned that it works without reinstalling but look like it's needed, or do say "reinstall".
If I install Lion to an external disk, can I boot from that and use the recovery disk assistant tool to restore the partition to my internal disk? (Which I assume I'll need to do to get FileVault to work) ?
    Thanks,
    Max

  • How do I use time machine backup to restore onto a different computer

I am trying to troubleshoot the best way to back up my Mac.  I have been a mac user since 20009 and always used a time machine.  The two times I have needed it for backup, my computer did not read the portion the backup was.  You could tell under disk utility the space was used.  Just before the need of backup, it was backing up.  So, I am wondering if I  need to use a different method.  I lost all of my Christmas 2015 movies.  My computer did some weird thing with passwords and it needs some resetting I had to do with the support team on the phone.  The support person could not figure out how to access the back up on time capsule.  I noticed the password resetting made my computer name different by putting a 3 behind the name I assigned it.
One thought that has crossed my mind is can you use the time machine backup and open it up on a completely different computer? If so, I should have been able to someone access my information.  I would like to know the answer and how do it so I know in case this ever happens again and so that I can rely on this expensive back up machine I have purchased two different times on two different computers and never been able to actually use.

Are you running Yosemite.. because it is the cause of loads of problems.
As to opening the TM backup from another computer.. yes you can.
Please read our TM expert Pondini.
    Q14-17 on restore here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Particularly as you will see Q17 and it will reference the prior info you need.
I have gone through this with several people.. and I have a post showing a manual file location and restore.
Can't access old files on time capsule
But not from Yosemite.. it has its own bunch of bugs.. as mentioned. Good luck with those.
I also strongly recommend people use a secondary backup method.. there are excellent third party.. I use Carbon Copy Cloner.. it is reasonable price.. $40 based on standard rsync.. and will create either bootable clones to a local drive or sparsebundle on a time capsule etc.
The bootable clone is the ideal way to recover files. since it is based on a simple computer reboot and then access of files that are in exactly the same place as you left them.. TM backs up in a most complicated manner.
See how tm works here. The top couple of articles and how it is different to clones. As Pondini suggests.. using both is no bad thing.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
This is also useful for yosemite.. it is not working as TM used to.
    Find files in Yosemite.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6681850?searchText=time%20machine%20yosemit e#27139370
While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
I am not sure why your previous use of TM failed.. In the midst of all its problems it does still work ok.. as mostly people can recover stuff they do.. albeit it needs a lot more messing than is typical Apple.

  • How to restore a Time Machine Backup onto two Hard Drives?

    Hey guys,
    configuration as following:
I got a SSD, which contains all system stuff as well as apps. Further there is a HDD on which all kind of Multimedia is stored. I've put a symlink from my Home Folder to that Multimedia-HDD: Users/IceThunder -> Volumes/Multimedia.
Before my Mac crashed - I still don't know what was causing that - i backed up everything, so now I find two folders (System and Multimedia) in my .backupdb folder. If I use Time Machine to restore the state before it crashed it only offers to restore everything(?) on one specified disk, which is not what I want to.
Is there a way to get back an exact copy of the former state? How can I tell Time Machine to restore folder "System" on my SSD and folder "Multimedia" on my HDD?
    Thanks in advance
    IceThunder

Time Machine should restore to the disks from which the backups were made as long as each has the same name as before. For more help on this see Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help.

  • How to restore a time machine backup from a corrupted disk

    Hi.
I have quite a problem. I recently downgraded to os x 10.5.4 due to the requirements of Digidesign's Pro Tools. I did so with a clean install in order to have the most optimized computer possible without loads of unused data. I had backed up my data using Time Machine on an external hard-drive (LaCie, 1 TB) so I wasn't worried about losing important data.
However, when I inserted my external hard-drive after the clean installation it turns out to be corrupted in some way. It is only recognized in Disk Utility, it doesn't mount on my desktop.
Disk Utility is unable to repair the disk. The errors are:
    +Verify and Repair volume “Kristoffer's back-up disk”+
    +Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.+
    +Invalid node structure+
    +Volume check failed.+
+Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.+
I went out and bought "Data Rescue II" at once to try to recover my data. It works fine with the stuff I've manually dragged to the disc but the Time Machine backup folders seem compressed in some way (It's only about 86 MB). And when I click a file restored from one of the Time Machine folders it seems like it's just a shortcut to an "original file". I get this error when double-clicking such a file:
+The alias "filename" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.+
Is there some way for me to get Time Machine to understand the back up disk even though it's corrupted? Or some other way to retrieve my data?
I have TONS of extremely important data on the disk so it would cost me a huge amount of work to format the disk and start from scratch.
    ANY help is greatly appreciated

no, that's quite impossible. you may try using Disk warrior on that drive. it's known to be able to fix the kind of error that DU is reporting. if that doesn't work your only hope is data recovery. If Data Rescue II doesn't work you can try other data recovery software like Filesalvage or try professional data recovery services (those can can a fortune).

  • 2nd External Drive - how to restore from Time Machine backup?

I have had Time Machine configured to back up my photos and videos on an external drive. My Time Machine backup is a separate drive attached to my MacBook by FireWire. I have Leopard OS. I have in the past successfully retrieved deleted photos from the Time Machine backups using iPhoto.
Now, unfortunately, the external drive with the photos and videos has developed a problem (possibly power-related) so that my MacBook no longer recognizes that drive. Obviously, this means that iPhoto can't find/open that photo library. Which means that iPhoto can't access the backup via Time Machine. Help! The photos must surely be on the Time Machine backup but I can't figure out any way to retrieve them.

    callipygia600,
This one's easy. Purchase a new drive to replace the one that went "belly up." Format (erase) it using Mac OS Extended, and give the volume that will be created the exact same name as the bad drive. Navigate into the new (empty) volume in the Finder, then open Time Machine from the Dock.
You should be able to navigate "back in time" and see the backed up contents. Select everything you see, and click "Restore." It will all be restored to your new external drive. The key is to use the same name for the new drive.
In the meantime, your backup can be accessed in the Finder if necessary. Using the Finder, navigate into the "Backups.backupdb" folder on the backup drive, then into the latest backup. You will see one folder named for your startup disk, and another named for your secondary/external volume. Within that second folder you will find the items that were stored on the bad drive. You can safely copy these to another volume using the Finder, but do not attempt to move or modify them otherwise (do what you like with the copies).

  • HT201250 How do I use Time Machine to back up an External Drive to another External Drive?

    Hello,
I have two 8TB Western Digital External Hard Drives with Thunderbolt ports.  I have already set up a 500GB G-TECH Mini to use as the Time Machine backup for my MacBook Pro.  Now, I would like to set up one of my 8TB drives to be the back up for my other 8TB drive, yet I seem to only be able to back up the MacBook Pro with Time Machine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Connect both 8TB externals to the computer, then do the following:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the 8TB drive to which you will copy. Source means the 8TB drive you will copy.

  • How to restore a Time Machine Backup from ML to Mavericks

Due to a failed install of Mavericks, I had to do a clean install. How do I restore an iPhoto Library contained in a ML Time Machine backup to Mavericks iPhoto. I'm almost to the point of opening the iPhoto Library in Preview and saving the files and re-importing them.

I think what you are saying is you have a backup that was done on Mavericks and want to restore it to an installation of Mountain Lion, is that correct? If so no that will not work as you are finding out. If I am still not understanding please tell me what version of OS X is installed on the iMac (Lion, ML, Mavericks etc..) and what version OS X you created the TM backup with.

  • How to continue use Time Machine backup after migration?

    Hi,
I just purchased a new mac and migrated using my Time Machine backup from my NAS.
This went smooth but now I would like to keep this backup as base for my new mac.  Unfortunately, this does not seem to work as my mac tries now to create a new image.
As I have pretty important documents on my previous backup, it would be nice if there would still be a way to continue using this one.  I saw somewhere that the migration assistant should ask if we want to continue based on this backup after migration but I did not receive this question.
Is there still a way to solve this?
Thanks in advance for your input!
    Kind regards,
    Fred

    Hi Leonie,
Thanks for your link!  I am migrating from Leopard to Mavericks.  If I understand correctly, this is the reason why I cannot inherit from previous backup.
The procudure to tweak seems pretty complicated though... not sure I will risk it.
    Thanks anyway!

    Fred

  • HT201250 How can I use Time Machine to reinstall Itunes 10.7? Itunes 11 is just horrible.

Itunes 11 was installed by accident. I hated it instantly and after two hours with it, hated it even more. I removed it but didn't know that this terrible software is a virus. It infects dozens of files in the OS and you can not go back to an earlier version.. Any version I install won't recognize either of my Ipods and gives me all kinds of errors. There must be a way to clean my system of this terrible malevolence and get me back to a good version of Itunes. I have talked with two technicians at Apple. One didn't know what to do at all and the other told me to erase my hard drive. In other words, they have no clue what this viral software does or how to deal with it. I know there are people out there who know more than Apple technicians. That wouldn't be too hard. Can anyone help me rid myself of this nightmare?

I'll tell you why. It is not only the library that is altered by 11. I was told by Apple support that it alters root files deep in the system making it virtually impossible to remove completely. What is a virus? It is unwanted software that buries itself in the system so you have to get special tools to remove it. And a virus often also alters other files to make them ureadable and causes strange sustem errors. I have all of these problems
I was updating other software that had nothing to do with itunes when this happened. A window came up saying my software needed updating. I thought the window came from the software i was trying to update but apparently it was the Apple Software Update. Why it came up I do not know. I went ahead with it and it installed 11. Itunes 11 is not a "needed" update at all. So, I have software that is not wanted or needed that buries itself in the system, causes sytem errors, alters files to make them unreadable and can not be removed. That's a virus.
I don't care about the library. I can replace that anytime. What I want is a detailed procedure from Apple developers listing what files were changed and how to safely remove and replace them to give me a working version of Itunes 10.4 that I was using before.
This Itunes 11 update is terrible beyond words. I should not have had this forced on me and neither should anyone else. Apple had no right to create this monster that has caused hundreds of people to lose data by being forced to go back months to an old OS system that isn't infected by the Itunes 11 virus.
Thank you for the response. If I am forced, I suppose I will have to restore. A drastic step for something that was entirely the fault of Apple Computer.

  • How to restore from Time Machine Backup?

I've used CleanMyMac to remove Aperture from MBP today. I think, that this almost destroyed my Mac. It seems that some fonts are missing, since some of the alert messages seems very strange. Further the dock is not appearing and generally it works very slow.
I need to restore my Mac from the lastest backup. Unfortunately, I do not have a Snow Leopard disc and cannot use the "Restore System from Backup" utility: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15638.html
Will I need to get a Snow Leopard disc or are there other ways to do this?

    Good call.
Very strange event here. I was replying to an alleged current post on Bootcamp or MacBook pro sections of these forums.
Might something from  "The Twilight Zone" and it isn't even close to Halloween yet.
More likely an iCloud "brain ****" event which we will have to become familiar with.

  • HT201250 when restoring a time machine backup to a new computer, does it affect the new operating system on the new computer

when restoring a time machine backup to a new computer, does it affect the new operating system on the new computer?

That depends on how you do it.
By far the best, easiest, most reliable method is to use Setup Assistant when your shiny new Mac first starts up, to transfer your apps, users, data, etc.   That doesn't disturb either the OS or basic Apple apps that came with the new Mac.  See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion.
There is a facility to restore an entire system from Time Machine backups, including the version of OSX on the backup, but that's for use when your internal HD has been erased or replaced only.  It's not a good idea to restore the full backup of one Mac to a different one.  Depending on the circumstances, the installer may not allow it.  Even if it does, the Mac may not start up, or may kernel panic, or not work properly.

    Thanks,

Thanks for your help on this. I was trying to restore from a new drive. The problem I have is that Time Machine will not let me do so, so far.
When I go into 'Restore from Time Machine Back up) I can access the Time Machine HD ok. But then when I go onto next page (Select a Back Up) the 'Restore From' option only has the greyed out name of my crashed HD (this seems wrong?). If I continue the process to erase starts and then stops, message says:
An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk.
it only seems to want me to back up to my crashed HD which I have no intention of using
