HT201250 I interrupted the initial back up...

...as I didn't realise how long it would take. Now TIme Machine will only back up as much data as it got from the drive in the initial back up.  How do I start over to get the full drive backed up and have I lost any data?

Hmmm,
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imagine something not being covered there.

  • Time Machine won't back me up anymore after the initial back up.

I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but I couldn't find any other topics with this. I have a problem with Time Machine backing up to Time Capsule. We just got a 1 TB Time Capsule this week. My initial back up went great and the speed was surprising. After that it did 2 more updates Tuesday and 3 or 4 more Wednesday. However ever since then it won't finish backing up. When I tell it to back up or it backs up automatically it has about 1 GB to update. It will start to back up very quickly up to 43 MB then it craws up to 54 MB and quits saying, "Unable to complete back up. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." I've tried things like plugging in an ethernet cable between Time Capsule and my Macbook but it doesn't help. I anyone has any helpful ideas they would be appreciated.

So I thought that fseventsd must be involved somewhere as it records the changes for TimeMachine to use to create the backups.
    Correct, most of the time.

I don't think the earlier messages indicate much, if any, of a problem, but this one likely does.
Jul 1 20:15:45 falstaff fseventsd[38]: bumping event counter to: 0xeb6dc3a6 (current 0x0) from log file '00000000eb6cafa8'
Yes, something wrong with the event log still/again.
    Ideas?
It does look like something going wrong with the event log. Just what isn't so clear.
I'd start by booting from your Leopard Install disc and repairing the internal HD, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
While you're at it, you might do the same on your backups, just to be sure they're ok, too.
When you reboot and run the next backup, Time Machine should log a UUID message about your internal HD, and do a "deep traversal." That will ignore the event log, instead comparing everything on your system to your backups, to be sure they match. That should "catch up" anything missed earlier.
Subsequent backups should revert to using the event log. Keep an eye on the messages (see #A1 in Troubleshooting for a handy widget); if the event log errors continue, something else is clearly wrong.

  • A silly thought on the initial back up.

maybe im thinking about this to much....but it seems like the initial backups i have done really slow down every hour. is time machine trying to do an hourly back up during this looooooonng process?

You might find useful advice in this Web page:

By the way, you either used the "Ask your question" field on this discussion board or you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum.  In either case, you typed a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future, use the "Start a discussion" link on the right, then just type a short summary of your post into the first (subject) field, then type the whole message into the field below that.
Also, you don't seem to have declared any of your system details in your profile or didn't select your details to be included in your post.  Those can help people give you correct advice.  To update that, click on "Your Stuff" near the top of a window on these discussion groups, then on "Profile".  Scroll down to "My Products" and either edit an existing one or add a new one.

  • HT201250 Why is the initial time machine backup 13GB when my HD is 22GB used?

    Hi,
I setup time machine to backup my mac but for some reason the initial backup is 13GB (it says backing up 13GB).
When I click on my hard drive in Finder and do show information my disk usage for my mac is 22GB.
How is this possible when time machine uses no compression and I am not excluding any folders?
Bit worried I wont be able to restore my mac if the time comes

    Howdy,
I started the initial backup of my MacBook Pro to my TimeCapsule, and it now says that it has backed up 4.1 GB of 159.5 GB. But the internal HD of the MacBook Pro is only 80 GB, and 31.4 GB are free!
Does anyone know what's up with this?
My primary user account is encrypted with FileVault.
I don't use FileVault, but I suspect that is the culprit. Since FV can only be backed up after you log out, it might be causing the problem. I know from reading the posts that FW and TM do not play very well together. It might be calculating your home directory twice. Just a thought.

  • How do you do the initial back up with ethernet cable

I'm trying to do a Time Capsule back up for the first time and it's painfully slow. It's telling me it's going to take 77 days! So I figured I'd just plug in an ethernet cable and do the back up via ethernet. Trouble is Time Machine refuses to find Time Capsule any other way than wirelessly... keeps launching Airport Setup Assistant to confiure it. Help.

It sounds as if you might have configured your Time Capsule to "join" your wireless network, correct?.
In this type of setup, the TIme Capsule simply becomes a wireless hard drive and the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled.
If you could consider connecting your Time Capsule to your main router using a permanent Ethernet cable connection, you would have the option to backup using wireless or Ethernet.

I have a 2008 iMac 21.5" using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard with VM Ware 4.1.3 supporting Windows 7. Initially ML OSX refused to install due to Back up on HD which I removed to trash. It then proceeded but froze up in the initial stages with 33 mins remaining. I was lucky enough to quit and restart using 10.6.8. With all the problems on this chat line, it appears it may be best to leave Mountain Lion well alone, and cut losses rather than tempt fate.Has anybody anything positive to say or help with?

  • After I search using Google in Firefox, and hit the back arrow button to return to the main homepage I use, the browser won't take me there. Instead, I'm left at the initial results page from my search.

Assume I start at Google as my homepage. I search for Federal Reserve. Google then brings up a number of selections for Federal Reserve. I can scroll through to more search results on page 2, 3, 4, etc. Now suppose I want to use the back arrow button to go back to Google as my homepage. I’ve found what I was looking for. When I try to get back to Google, the furthest back I can go is to page 1 of the search results. The browser won’t take me back to the original starting page which was Google. Also, it doesn’t matter what the starting page or initial page was. The browser will only take me back to the initial page after the original homepage. By the way, I did not install any new software or applications prior to this problem occurring. My guess is that it may have something to do with the function keys at the top of the keyboard. But I can’t figure out what the problem is with the function keys. It’s only a guess.

using Google toolbar for searches?? disable instant search (click the wrench to the right of the tool bar, untick enable instant, and hit save. worked for me

  • PC crash... getinng back an InDesign CS6 version, which was an upgrade from a CS3 product... looks like the serial number I have is for the initial CS3

I had InDesign CS3... which I upgraded in 2012 to CS6... two days ago my PC crashed... and I need to reload InDesign... I downloaded from Adobe.com InDesign CS6... but when entering my serial number, I got a message saying that my serial n° is valid but that there is no eligible product on my PC... I suspect that my serial n° is related to the initial C3 version I had bought... I guess that I could download CS3 from Adobe.com... and use my serial number... but how I do get back my CS6 upgrade? Thanks a million for any hlep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    OK, here is the situation:
    * I am an Adobe customer
    * I bought in 2008 CSInDesign CS3 and I have the serial n° [removed by moderator] in my Adobe account (shows as Adobe InDesign, version = CS3, platform = Win)
    * In 2012, I upgraded my CS3 to CS6 and I have a serial n° [removed by moderator] for that in my Adobe account (shows as Adobe InDesign, version = 8.0, platform = Win)
After my PC crash, I downloaded InDesign CS6 and use my serial n° of 2012. It doesn't work, as it says my product is not eligible.
So, here is where I stand now...
    * I downloaded CS3 and used my serial n° for InDesign CS3. It works. I now have CS3 on my PC
    * How do I get back my 'upgrade from CS3 to CS6?
    * I have the serial number for that upgrage and I guess I need to download an "upgrade" file somewhere from Adobe. But I cannot find it, I found pages with upgrades, but there are so many different files, I do not have a clue which one to use;
This is now my key question... can someone give me the link to access the file(s) I have to download to upgrade my InDesign CS3 version to InDesign CS6

In the SETTINGS page, when i press MAIL,CONTACT , CALENDARS the page back to the initial page and do not open the page requested..

    Tks for the help

A reboot should be enough to make it work.
    Just restart your computer.
Otherwise, make sure you're an administrator - as if you're not, it could be that the administrator put a restiction.

  • How to refund back the initial deposit?

    Re: Renting Rooms
    Hi
A customer has to pay an initial deposit so that he/she may start renting room.
The customer has to make a monthly invoice payment for the rent. (AR module)
At the end of his/her stay, i have to refund back the customer the initial deposit. (AP module)
can somebody advise me how to proceed?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Roshan

    Hi Roshan.
By dummy account i mean an account that can be any one and also many people called it Clearing Account. Let me try to explain better.
My Set of Books has 8 segments:
    1-Company
    2-Account
    3-Reporting
    4-Cost Center
    5-Intercompany
    6-Product
    7-Blank
    8-Blank
I defined an account to deal with refunds - to which i called 'Refunds Control' - and it is defined this way: 01.2682082.0.0.0.0.0.0
    1-01
    2-2682082 Refunds Control
    3-0
    4-0
    5-0
    6-0
    7-0
    8-0
Whenever i want to know if there are refunds that i have not processed, i just have to query the account.
When you create the Debit Memo this account will be credited and when you create the Standard Invoice it is debited, so if it has a balance different from zero, something is missing (normally to create the Standard Invoice).

  • HT201250 The initial backup is taking 2 days.  Can I stop and restart without any issues?

Just got an iomega external hard disk backup and the initial backup is said to take two days.  Can I stop and restart without any issues?

On a big backup, the initial estimate is often wrong and gets better after a little while. But, yeah, there is a "Stop backing up" command in the Time Machine menu, right?  That is safe as far as I know.

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • Error message on iphone 3GS when initiating back-up for the first time "icloud backup failed - how to fix

When initiating back-up of my 3GS to icloud for the first time, I repeatedly receive an error message reading:
    "iCloud backup failed
There was a problem enabling iCloud backup"
I cannot find a solution to this problem amd no amount of checking and rechecking account settings etc. has made any difference. Does anyone have experience of how to overcome this issue. The iCloud back-up initiated on my iPad without any problem so I do not think the problem is account related.
    Thanks.

    Same problem here...
I just upgraded my 3GS to iOS5 and signed into iCloud using my Apple ID...
Every time I click "Back Up Now" in the iCloud preferences on the iPhone, I get "There was a problem completing the backup.  Please try again later."
On my wife's iPhone 4, I just performed a back up and there were no errors.  I tried this also on my wife's iPad 2 and it worked perfectly.
    I have tried the following:
    1. In iTunes, when my phone is connected, I selected "Back up to iCloud" on the summary tab
    2. Reset my phone using the steps in the above post
    3. Deleted the iCloud account on my iPhone and logged in again
    4. Tried to backup from 3 different wireless networks
None of the steps above fixed the issue which has been going on all day for me...
Any other help would be great - thanks!

When migrating from time machine to my new hard drive, it migrates the first back-up I made several years ago. How can I migrate the latest back-up ? I need time machine to migrate the latest back-up. Should I delete the older back-ups ?

As noondaywitch says, it should use the latest backup.
Where are your backups (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?
It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set.

  • When working in Premiere (all versions), it will crash and revert back to the initial project file.

Even though I auto-save every 5 minues, when the Premiere crashes, it reverts to the initial project file that I opened. I lost 5 hours of editing yesterday. Any thoughts?

i dont know if there is a global restore original audio command...   when i right click the edited audio file in premiere, i have an option to "restore unrendered", which restores the original audio. would still have to select them all and do this, or use the Find tool with the timeline window active, and search for "extracted" to find them one at a time. can also setup keyboard shortcuts for find next to speed the process up.
