HT201250 Infected time machine/capsule

How does one scrub the time machine/capsule that has become infected and start afresh?

Ray-Atlanta wrote:
Are there solutions on market to protect the time capsule.
Not that I'm aware of. TimeMachine format is very complex and the volume is normally locked which prevents anything from being manually deleted. Everybody I've ever discussed this with who found a way to delete a file manually ended up with a worthless backup having caused un-repairable damage to the index.
The only thing that makes sense is when an infected file is found on any computer being backed up to have the location of the file open in the Finder and enter TimeMachine, highlight the file, then select "Delete all Backups of "<filename>" from the Action menu (Gear) in the toolbar.
The only way an infected file on your Time Capsule can get loose is by doing a restore from it, so you could just ignore it and it will eventually be deleted over time. Just make a note of the fact that there are infected files and run a scan immediately after doing a restore to clean things up.
Also concerned that the backups on the capsule were not totally erased.
Don't be, if you erased it they are gone. If somebody wants to forensically analyze the hard drive they could possible be recovered, but there is no way it could be harmful to anybody, even if used to restore. Odds are several hundred thousand to one that they were Windows malware, anyway.

I cant seem to find my time machine=( i have an external harddrive, but i have to take backup maually, ive looked on apple downloads page, but i dont find it =(
    can someone help me?

    Hey!
Looking at your OSX you're running 10.4. (Tiger). For Time Machine/capsule you need 10.5(Leopard) which is available to buy from Apple or other Software distributors. You do not have it with Tiger.

  • Can I use Time Machine/Capsule more simply?

Every month, I plug in my external backup hard drive, delete all files from the last time I did a backup, and then copy my {user name} folder from my Mac to the hard drive. It takes awhile but serves my needs.
I would use Time Machine/Capsule if could be configured to be simple.
    1) I don't need all the program files off my laptop, just my data (I can always re-install apps).
    2) I don't need incremental backups (i.e. see the state of a file 3 months ago vs 2 months ago); I just need the last one I backed up.
Can I configure Time Machine/Capsule to do just this simply? I'm all about using Apple programs but would need it to be simple.
    Thanks.

Why? Why not let Time Machine back up your entire system? That's what it was designed to do, and will protect you best that way. Yes, the first backup will copy everything, so it will take a long time (connect your Mac to the TC via an Ethernet cable if at all possible for this).
But thereafter, TM's hourly backups of only what's new or changed should be very quick.
Then when your internal HD fails, one simple step will recover your entire system to the exact condition it was in at the time of any backup (see #14 in the FAQ Tip below).
And the configuration is a one-time process, and quite simple.

  • HT201250 My time machine is not backing up automatically to my time capsule since my upgrade to Moutain Lion.

Since  I upgraded my iMac,my time machine is not backing up automatically to my time capsule since my upgrade to Moutain Lion.

I have a similar problem.  On my iMac, I swapped out (at Genius Bar) my HD via Seagate replacement program.  Ever since my time machine won't backup.  I get a error msg that says:
Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "[my time machine name]"
The backup disk is not available.
    Any suggestions.

  • HT201250 my time machine has stopped backing up on time capsule. It is plugged into my network

My time machine is set to back up my mac using time capsule.. It has stopped backing up. When I check the icon, says "skip this back up". Before that it said it could not back up. Not sure what changed.
Said it has not backed up in a month. I cannot access anything to tell me what is going on. Please advise.

says last back up was Dec 5. Ugh.

  • Hi! how can I set the time machine/capsule back-up intervals? Heron 2

    HI! EVERYBODY,
HOW CAN I SYNC 2 TIME CAPSULES INSTALLED IN TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS, MAIN HOME AND SUMMER HOME?
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

To use different backup intervals use TimeMachineEditor 2.5.3. I do not think syncing two Time Capsule to one another is feasible or possible. For all things Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ

  • Cannot back up with Time Machine/Capsule after new drive installed in MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.8.5.
I just had a larger hard drive installed by Tekserve. This is to be my first back up since installing the new drive. I have 2 back ups: one to my Time Capsule via WiFi, the other to an external Le Cie via USB.
Time Machine just gives me preparing to backup but goes no further, just stuck in that mode. I suspect that it can't find my old drive, which it backed up till now. But I cannot find a way to correct this possible snafu. I do not see an option in Preferences.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Just so we are clear.. were your files all recovered from backup after the install of the disk?? Did you supply one of the backups to the company who did the installation so they could do the recovery?
You do want to be careful not to damage the old backup.. it might really be better to start over a clean new backup.
TM should be reset. It sounds like they did recover your settings.. Please check Pondini here.
    A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Also use A1 to check what the log is saying about TM.. the old backup will need to be fully indexed and checked if you intend to keep using it.. and that will take several hours to the TC if you use wireless.. The problem people expect fast starts but that is not possible unless you are doing a new backup.
You can also check some of the other help files there eg D1 long preparing for why that happens.

  • Time Machine/Capsule Password stress-PLEASE HELP

I just bought a Time Capsule and am trying to set up my first back-up on Time Machine. The problem is that when I am prompted to enter my username and password to "access the file server", I plug the info in and it says that it's invalid! I went back and reset everything and checked all my username and password stuff and nothing works. I even re-started in "safe" mode and then started again and nothing. I would call into Mac Support but the iPhone 3G came out today and they are swamped with phone calls. Can anyone help me? I don't want to sit on the phone for hours on hold... :o(

Nope, it didn't change anything. I am getting really frustrated! Any other suggestions? I have also made sure that I am teh administrator on the computer and checked all my passwords and user names to be sure they are what they are supposed to be. sigh

  • How to drag and drop files in Time Machine Capsule?

    Hi, all
I have recently bought a Time Machine 2 TB. I have backed up my MacBook Air over the Time Machine. I was trying to copy or drag and drop files in the time capsule, but it wont allow me. It Neither does allow me to create any new folders in the Airport Time Machine. If i try to drag and drop files in it, it says, click to Authenticate, however, there is no place or tab to authenticate. I am the administrator.
    Please advise.
    Thanks

It sounds like you are trying to copy / paste files to the Time Capsule Finder icon, when you should be copying / pasting to the drive on the Time Capsule, which is named "Data" unless you have changed it.
Open any Finder window and look for the Time Capsule icon under the Shared heading on the left side of the window
Click on the Time Capsule, which will display a folder to the right named Data, unless you have changed the name of the drive
Double-cllick on Data to mount the drive on the desktop
You can drag / drop or copy / paste files onto the drive icon, or open the drive and drag files into the open window.
The first time that you do this, you may be asked for the Time Capsule device or disk password.

  • Time machine/capsule not working - Error 111.

    I love my mac...
But right now I'm ready to throw it off the balcony!
Even since upgrading to lion, I've been having small issues arise, but they normally seem to sort themselves out.
HOWEVER, for some reason, my computer won't connect to the time capsule to back up (can still use it to connect to the internet though)
This is the error message I get:
"The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/computernamehere.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 111)"
Any ideas?? I can't find anything on these support forums about this problem.
I'm not overly techno-language literate, and I am sorry for that, but I really need to get this fixed, because I'm sick of seeing that message pop up every 5 minutes!!!
    Thanks in advance

    Same problem here.
After some backups my Time Capsule (or my Time Machine, I don't know which one, really) stopped work fine. Then this message appears when I try do a backup: "The backup disk image could not be accessed (error -1)."
I think this happened after I did not make backup for a week. Before this, while I was backing up all day, I didn't have problem.
I believe that is a Time Machine software problem, and not a Time Capsule issue. Buth I can't solve it, like others. Any help will be very usefull for all of us that experiencing this problems.

  • HT201250 Is Time Machine Scalable?

I have a MBA with about 150GB of files and a TIme Capsule.  It looks like this is too much for Time Machine to handle.  The initial backup takes 2 days and the hourly backups take more than an hour.  While the backup processes are running my MBA occasionally becomes unresponsive for a minute at a time.  This means that if I keep automatic backups enabled it is difficult to use the computer because of all the interruptions.  When I turn off automatic backups and only manually backup files Time Machine periodically tries to perform a complete backup which takes 2 solid days.
I did some digging to see how Time Machine works.  It looks like Time Machine mounts the remote drive and performs all comparisons as a local file system operation.  This means that to check which files have changed Time Machine has to read information about every file on the remote disk across the network.  During this operation Activity Monitor shows that my wireless network is saturated--note that I have an Air which does not have an ethernet port.  This appears to limit Time Machine's/Capsule's scalability.
I have been digging around to see if I can make this purchase useful, but it does not apear that there are very many tuning options with Time Machine.  Any suggestions are welcome.  Otherwise I will have to return my Time Capsule and look for a more scalable solution.  Any recommendations for alternatives would be welcomed as well.

Question?  Do you have a Virtual Machine running on your Mac (VMware Fusion, Parallels, VirtualBox) with a guest OS installed?  Any changes made by a guest OS in their container file will result in the entire file being backed up.  This can increase the backup time a great deal.  The same effect will occur if you have any very large file that is always changing, such as a huge log file that has items appended to its tail end on a regular bases.
With respect to scheduling, there are utilities available to change the scheduling anyway you wish.  Search over at MacUpdate.com
Regarding the relative efficiency for Time Machine versus rsync, there is no comparison between the two.  Rsync is hands down more efficient in terms of CPU and network usage.
A well working Time Machine WILL be more efficient that rsync (and I am a heavy rsync user, as well as a Unix file system developer during the day).  Time Machine uses Spotlight to keep track of changed files, so that when it is time to do a backup Time Machine does not need to look for changed files, it has a list handed to it from Spotlight.
Rsync needs to scan the entire file system on BOTH the source AND destination system reading every file's metadata to get the modification date and compare that between the source and destination system.  That in and of itself is very demanding on the disk drives of BOTH source and destination systems.
I use rsync to backup my Mom's system across the internet, I use rsync to backup several systems at work, I rsync to transfer software trees to build servers, I use rsync to keep my personal scripts and utilities in sync on multiple systems.  Rsync is great, however, it is not as efficient, and most definitely not as easy to use as Time Machine.
So if you are having problems, there is something else going on, as most users do not experience what you are seeing.  Including me, as I also use Time Machine on several systems.
For example, as mentioned above, huge files that get modified on a regular bases.
Since you are going over a network, it is possible you have network interference that is reducing your effective trasnfer speeds.  Using 802.11g vs 802.11n w/5GHz frequences.  A network sniffer (iStumbler, KISMac, ...) would be able to tell you if you have neighbors using the same channels, or a channel that is within 5 of yours that might be causing interference.
As for shutting down vs sleeping your Mac, I do not know if that would or should affect your Time Machine backup performance.  I would be looking at other things.
However, I might speculate that maybe Mac OS X thinks your Time Machine container file stored on the Time Capsule is damaged, so its is running 'fsck' when Time Machine mounts the volume.  This would consume a great deal of time.  You could run Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and see if there is an fsck_hfs program running while your excessively long Time Machine backup is in progress.
Finally, if you prefer rsync, you can always just use the Time Capsule as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) and backup using rsync from your Mac to the Time Capsule.  You could even use Carbon Copy Cloner which is a very nice GUI wrapped around rsync, and as a bonus the CCC developer always ships the most recent Mac OS X compatible rsync as part of the CCC distribution.  If you want rsync AND you want the multiple generation incremental Time Machine backup features, you can either roll your own using the rsync --link-dest option, or find one of the Unix scripts, such as rsnapshot (or similar) that wrap a script around rsync --link-dest (almost as good as a Time Machine incremental backup).
Bottom line.  You have a problem.  It is specific to your situation.  I have listed several possible reasons for what you are seeing, there could be more.  If you could provide feedback on some of the things I've mentioned, maybe we could help figure out what is going on.

  • HT201250 Why time machine returns an error message that says "unable to open version"?

I am using Neat for Mac (a scanner software), but it looks like time machine is not doing the backup for it. Every time I open time machine and I have that application opened time machine shows a message that says "unable to open version". Does anybody know what this mean?
    Thanks

No, sorry I haven't heard of it.. but there are several softwares around that cause TM issues.
Is the scanner on the network? Or are you backing up to a USB drive and the scanner is also plugged in by USB.. Expect issues anytime you have an application that is going to take control of the port that TM requires for the backup..
It might be easy to solve by simply using another device that plugs in differently.. ie FW800 disk instead of USB.. or instead of Time Capsule if it is network issue.
Or simply buy a different backup software. Since Mavericks.. Time Machine is troublesome.. that is far from the only backup choice.. or even the best one.
Carbon Copy Cloner is my current favourite.. but others are certainly readily available and doubtless work fine.

  • Time Machine/Capsule and Duplicate emails

I recently got a Time Capsule. Even more recently, I've started getting tons of duplicate emails -- emails that I've already read show up as unread (usually one or two, this morning 4 new copies). It makes me feel very popular to see that I have 315 new emails, but it's a pain to have to go back and re-delete them. Help?

    eroomekim wrote:
This is happening every Thursday when TimeCapsule runs.
Do you mean you only do Time Machine backups once a week?
I would say that it's when TImeCapsule does it's weekly compressed file, though that is a shot in the wind.
There is no such thing as a "weekly compressed file" in Time Machine. All TM backups are the same. The only difference is, when "thinning" expired backups, TM keeps one per week for as long as there's room; the first of each day for a month; and all others are deleted after 24 hours.
Would love it if Apple would respond to this issue as it's a serious time waster and annoyance.
Apple does not respond to posts here. This is a user-to-user forum. If you want to contact Apple, try Canada technical support at (800) 263-3394.

  • Time Machine/Capsule backup

I have searched the manuals and this site and I do not see my problem.  I keep getting an error "unable to complete backup Error creating backup folder". I have selected my time machine. I have two external hard drives but they are not selected. I have unplugged, and reset, and still get the same message. The problem started when I switched location of my backups from an external hard drive to the time capsule. After a week, I deleted the old backups from the external drives so I could start using them for something else.
Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

I tried unplugging the external hard drives, but the error still appears.

  • Time Machine/Capsule Continually Failing Back-up

    Hi,
I have been having this issue for weeks now but whenever I attempt to back up my iMac (Mid 2011 Model, with Mountian Lion 10.8.3) it constantly fails and I have been running around these forums like crazy trying to find a solution. I bought my Time Capsule with my iMac, 2TB version. I also back-up my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 Model) All of this started when for some reason Time Machine stopped working and I wipped everything and started again.
It is connected wirelessly to my router and to both Macs (Too far away for me to hard wire).
