HT201250 light is amber, no dns on my time machine

my issue with time machine is it says another network is using my id. Now amber light is continous evenafter restartins, and says I hve no dns help please

DNS stand for Domain Name Server, it's a server your ISP (usually unless it's changed) uses to resolve a Domain Name like Apple.com into a iP address like 94.174.85.343 (only a example) this way your computer can connect to that IP address.
Because the IP address can change and keep it's smae name, like a business can change location yet still remain the same name, the DNS is updated to reflect these changes so your connecting to the correct site.
Your signature says your on 10.6.3, this is outdated, I hope you have at least updated to 10.6.8 under the Apple menu > Software Update. Applying security updates is important.
When you say another computer is using your id, that means something is wrong that another comptuer on your local network is using the same local IP that your machine is using.
You seem to have a lot of issues and perhaps don't know a whole lot about computers and networks, it wouldn't be a bad decision to call in a local professional to resolve your problems and secure your network, look for trjoans (Flashback) you may installed on your machine by accident.
I suspect this is what has happened, as the DNS is changed. It might be your ISP DNS server is down, you might want to wait.
Why your TimeMachine drive is not funtional is another strange issue. Perhaps you have it confused with something else?
More information is required and we may be able to assist.

  • How can i configure a dynamic dns at a time machine

    Hi All,
I have a time machine at home, with Airport Utility version 6.1.
I'm currently trying to configure a dynamic dns at the airport itself but I don't have any luck in finding the functionality to do so. Couple of questions:
      1) Do I really have to install the previous versions 5.6 Airport Utility to configure DDNS?
      2) I assume if I can't use the previous versions of Airport Utility then I would need to use a Dynamic Update Client. My No-IP Dynamic Update Client doesn't seem to be running on MAC OS X Mountain Lion. Is there any other developers that provides a domain for free and the DUC is actually working on OS X Mountain Lion? (E.g. I heard that DysDNS doesn't provide an entirely free service anymore)

I think you mean Time Capsule not time machine.. TC is the hardware .. TM is the software backup program in the computer and has nought to do with DDNS.
There is no DDNS client in the TC.. never has been. Apple must have some private system for icloud to work.. but no access is allowed to it by users. As with all things apple it is designed to ensure you are able to use icloud or nothing.
I am not on ML or even Lion.. good old SL is fine to me.. and far better networking.
I presume some of the dyndns providers will offer a client for ML now..
All of the free services are trying to sell you something.. and constantly harras you.. no free lunch in this world.
The easiest method and to escape the upgrade cycle.. just get another router.. almost every router in the world provides several dyndns clients built in. The router is where this should be done. so the computer can stay off. Just bridge the TC and port forward to it. Simple and cheap.

  • HT201250 Can I back up multiple volumes using Time Machine on Snow Leopard?

I have a fault with my time machine software where it is no longer able to perform incremental back ups of the volumes (partitions) I have created on my internal hard drive - every attempt results in a full back up. However incremental back up of the Mac HD is working. I have had it working perfectly in the past. I'm backing up to a dedicated external hard drive.
I have just been told by an apple support manager that Time machine on OS 10.6.8 is not designed to back up multiple volumes (partitions) on my internal hard drive, only the current Mac HD drive - is this correct? He said it shouldn't be backing up the other volumes and the reason it is doing so and has done so in the past is because of bug!
Surely this is not the case?

I would read and try this.  Pondini is very knowledgeable about Time Machine:

  • HT201250 old data transferred to new computer via time machine, is external hard drive still usable

I set up my new macbook from an old macbook via time machine and an external WD Harddrive.
The setup partitioned my macbook to two user id's, now I need to back up.
The old user id is backing up everything again and the new user id wants to create a new backup to my WD Harddrive like it is not used.
I don't believe that my WD was partitioned.
Help!  How can I continue using my WD and backup both user id information without losing anything?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • HT201250 How to retrieve external drive backups from time machine on hard drive without external drive connected

I am keeping my work files on an external drive which are backed up using Time Machine onto my computer's hard drive. I set it up this way so I can take my actual work drive with me if I need it. However, I just noticed that I can't see any of those files in time machine if the drive itself isn't plugged in, which makes this method useless. Is there any way to get to those, or do I need to reconfigure my backup system? I always thought if something happened to my hard drive I'd have a backup, but that won't work if I can't get to the files.

See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

  • HT201250 Any ideas on how to recover my Time Machine backup with a lost password?

I am trying to migrate my Time Machine backup to a new Macbook, but lost the Time machine administrator name and password.
My old Macbook still connects to Time machine, so the information (administrator and password) is in that computer somewhwere - I just can't find it.
Is there a way to find that information in my old machine or otherwise get into the Time Machine files?
I am using a Seagate external drive connected to a wireless router.

    I have a similar problem.

Did you ever find out how to reset the Time machine name and password? I would appreciate hearing from you.

Better to Partiton the TM drive (you won't lose your data), and use the 2nd partiton for the MBA

  • HT201250 is there any way to retrieve deleted time machine backups?

is there any way to retrieve deleted time machine backups? it has now deleted the oldest, but most important backup. It was made right before before upgrading to mountain lion. Because I had some issues with placing the files back the way I wanted, I had to connect my hard drive to my mac several times. Result, everytime I did so, a backup was made. Like today, when I was transferring everything from that specific backup. But in the meantime Time Machine made a new backup, deleting the old one I was using.  Ironically, I lost everything while I was transferring the files back to my mac. Please give me good news.

Once the external hard drive that you use for Time machine deleted its oldest backup and overwrote it, the ability to retrieve those files disappeared.  They are gone for good.
    Hope this helps

  • HT201250 how do i save selected emails to time machine?

how do i save selected emails to time machine?

Don't put emails you want to save into the Trash. In the mail sidebar you should see an "On MY MAC" section below the Inbox, Trash, Junk, etc., mailboxes. You can create mailboxes in this section for emails you want to save. (I suggest you check out Mail help & at least read the overview info.)
Also, there is no point in looking for individual email files in Time Machine backups (or for that matter in the Mail folders on your HD). They are stored with names that won't make sense to you & cross-linked with database & other files Mail maintains.
You are making this harder than it is. Just let Time Machine back up everything & it will take care of the rest of it.

  • HT201250 Recover previous data on HHD after run Time machine

Hello, how can I recover the data which were on the external HHD and that have been canceled after having run the time machine for the first backup? I had all my pictures on it .... :-( Thanks for your help !!!

If you continue to use your machine it will be impossible to recover anything. You might look into data recovery software or take it to data recovery service. Could prove to be very expensive.

  • HT201250 Should I reformat a external drive for time machine to work?

I am setting up a new time machine for a new MacBook Pro and am going to use a drive that I previously used for backing up a windows computer. Will I need to reformat to drive. I assume I will have to.

Yes.. Time Machine requires Mac OS Extended (journaled)

  • HT201250 How can I find a file on Time Machine.

The file was on my Desktop at one time but has been deleted. Typing it's name in the TM Spotlight field and clicking the Back Button (per the TM tutorial) doesn't work. Has anyone found a specific file on Time Machins that is no longer on the Mac?

First of all, I don't work for Apple and neither do most people who post here. This is primarily a user community.
The documentation is correct, even if you didn't have any success. I prefer to use mende1's suggestion, so I don't use Spotlight in Time Machine.
I understand you are frustrated, as I would be if it didn't work. Computer frustration isn’t one of my favorite pastimes.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
