HT201250 Lion server not backing up to time machine.

Manual backups work.  States next scheduled backup but it never runs.  Any clues?
Running latest OS X Lion and using an external hard drive as time machine backup.

No hacks installed, only had server running for 4 days.  I waited and watched this morning for the 7:29 backup but nothing happend. No errors or status messages.
The only entries in the ;og files at this time are ...

Does your external hard drive have it's own power supply?  It should.
Is your external hard drive formatted with the NTFS file system?  It won't work.
It needs to be formatted either with Mac OS Extended or FAT32.
(There are drivers available to add NTFS support to OS X but their quality is unknown, especially the "free" ones.)

I just fix my macbook air because it was kernel panic. They changed the hard drive. I could not back up with Time Machine, because it did not work and I had over Adobe creative suite 5 design premium student. But I finished my studies last year and I'd like to know how to get the serial number for me to reinstall Adobe creative suite 5 design premium when I am no longer study because I would still like the used? It is not fair if I do anymore because I really need.

You can download Creative Suite 5 here:

  • How can I restore stickies which were not backed up on Time Machine?

I accidently deleted some text on a stickie note.  That note was not backed up in Time Machine. That text is also gone from the Stickies Database.  Everything that I read online leads me to believe that I can find this deleted text in this file... com.apple.Stickies.plist.  Is that correct?
If so how do I retrieve this text?  Is there a tutorial somewhere?
The notes online say that I can open the file in Omni Outliner and then use NVU to convert it to text.  How does that work?
When I open the file in Omni Outliner, I get this...
Now what do I do?  Any help, or suggestions on how to recover this data, either using the method described above or otherwise, would be helpful.
    Thank You.

  • My Lacie external hard drive will not back up on Time Machine. Says there's not enough space. This has happened with every single external I've purchased. Thought TM was supposed to delete old backups??

My Lacie External backed up on Time Machine after the first back up but now says there's not enough room. I thought TM deleted old back ups to save new versions. What am I doing wrong. This happens to me constantly. Every single external hard drive I've purchased for the MacBook Pro (5 of them) has not worked either initially or at the second back up. It either isn't formatted properly so I have to go to Genius bar to help me set up for the first back up, or after the first back up, it says there's not enough space and I have to go back to Genius Bar. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?

I just purchased 2 external hardrives. a LaCie Minimus and a G Drive. Each 1 TB. The guy at Apple told me that would provide 2 good TM backups for me. My internal HD has 750 GB capacity, of which I'm using 700 GB. Perhaps the ratio is not great enough. I do wish they would have told me this before I purchased the two Bummmmer! I even had them format and get the first back-ups going because of issues I've had in the past. I also just bought a 750 GB for photos.
So, I won't be able to buy another bigger external since I've just purchased 3. Ugh. Well, I'll just exclude some files and divide things up. Eventually, I just want my 20,000 iphotos on one of the 1TB externals, and a TM back-up on another so that iphoto will function once more. It really hates how many photos I have and is brutally punishing me for it.I seriously need to do some housecleaning!
Thanks for the advice. Just moved from US to Australia last week and was hoping to upload a few photos and the domino effect has lead me to this. Just went to Genius Bar in Perth today and they told me how to reformat drive to transfer iphoto library over, but I got stuck at trying to back-up my TM.

  • Are Notes backed up in Time Machine on 10.8?

Notes app is no longer contained in Mail in Mountain Lion.   I can't seem to figure out how to restore a note from time machine anymore.  Before, they were just like emails and it was easy - open Mail, enter Time Machine, choose date, restore email or note.  Now, I'm not sure where they went.  Does anybody know?

Necro-ing this because this thread helped...
Go to "Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes/" normally (outside of Time Machine). Then, enter Time Machine. It should take you straight to the "Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes/" folder. Then, restore all the files in this folder from a legitimate backup. Restart. Your Notes should reappear (did for me).

  • Dropbox folder not backed up by Time Machine - part 2

    Hi,
Below is a sum up of the previous discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/25398587#25398587)
I unintentionally checked the "this solved my question" button but the question is not solved yet.
    So :
    - I have a DropBox folder which is backed up by Time Machine
    - Everything works well except for one folder (which is often used)
    - There are no exclusion rules in Time Machine preference settings concerning any DropBox folder or files (I double checked)
    - The folder is shared with two other mac users, and I am the owner of the folder
    - The folder permissions are the same as the other folders - I did an Onyx automation with permission repair
    - No system error displayed when backing up with Time Machine
    - The folder is backed up with no problem with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner
    - I tried the tmutil removeexclusion command with no error but no results
Did anyone already experienced this bug?
    Thanks for your help

Sorry for the delay.  I have been out on the water fishing for two days.  Hah!  No internet.
So; although I am not sure when you say "remote" exactly what you mean.  I have two homes. My house on the water is on Comcast cable internet, my condo in the city is on Verizon Fios. Dropbox does it's thing on the internet or "through" the internet.  There is no difference to being in the same LAN, although I do have that turned on.    When I bring my Mac Book to my house where my Mac Pro is, no difference. DB is synching files over the LAN or the internet.
So I have no problems with missing files and I have an additional complication. I use a DBase software called Devonthink Pro. I use dropbox with a syncstore setting to keep my Devonthink files files in sync on both computers.  The files themselves are NOT synched to DropBox. That would be several gigs.
So; here is my point.  If you're using anything similar to that; you will NOT see an updated version on your local Mac until you Open the application and it syncs once.   Is it possible that is what you're seeing.
Again  I am having zero problems with Dropbox syncing between basically three Macs (one; is my wife's Air- she doesn't do the same things I do but some files are synced across, such as 1Password vault)  in different physical locations plus two iPads.  Plus doing a slightly more complex set up with a sync store.
Is it possible you have a preference setting different on the two Macs, or you are using an app that only uses a syncstore?

  • IPhoto Library not backed up by Time Machine

I recently reformatted my hard drive and restored everything from my Time Machine Backup. Everything came back except for my iPhoto Library. I have searched and searched through my Time Machine backups (which go back about 6 Months) and there is no iPhoto library at all. What did I do to exclude iPhoto from being backed up by Time Machine? What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know what might have unadvertantly excluded the iPhoto Library from the backup but you might try the following:
1 - open the TM preference pane
2 - in the Options section add the Pictures folder to be excluded.
3 - close the TM preference pane.
4 - open the TM pref pane and take the Pictures folder out of the excluded status.
5 - start a TM backup and check to see if the library is included when it's done.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Restore Lion Server Postgres database only from Time Machine Backup

I just transferred our server from one box to another, and in the process, seem to have dumped our Postgres Caldav database, but not to a file, so it's gone.  I know have no calendars and no way to access them.  I do have a recent Time Machine backup of the server, but am not sure how to get my calendar data back so I can properly export it.  Honestly, I'm not that sure how to properly export it either once I have it back.  I'm afraid the previous postgres dump command I use will just do the same thing.  Anyone have experience in the matter?  Thanks!

I was helping you out with this in a thread last week: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3890595
In that thread I pointed you to Charle Edge's blog at Krypted where he goes into detail how to backup and restore your iCal database. I also told you this in my instructions:
These instructions assume that you have a backup of your caldav database sitting on your desktop, and it's called 'caldav.sql'.
So you we're supposed to make a backup of your database as the first thing that you do. dropdb wipes out your database completely, it doesn't restore it. You were supposed to make a backup of it first (instructions for this were at the link I gave you to Krypted).
Did you make a full backup of your server before you ran this command?

  • How do I make Lion Server support more than one Time Machine disk?

Under Snow Leopard Server, I had two disks set up for Time Machine backups. This came about as I'm running a Mac Mini with the 500 GB internal drives which turned out to be insufficient for one of the connected Macs which uses a terabyte drive. I then added an external 6 TB drive and made it a Time Machine destination too. Worked beautifully. When I upgraded to Lion Server the external large drive was no longer available for backups and the interface for configuration within Server only allows for one drive to be in use at a time. Any suggestions (short on reverting to Snow Leopard) as to how to re-enable having both drives available for networked Time Machine access?
    Thanks!

    Hi Adam,
Before I even realised that the Server app had a setting for TM, I just configured TM backups on my (SL) clients as I had done in SL.
I shared the drive(s) on the server I wanted to use.
For each client, I mounted the appropriate shared drive containing its sparseimage file, then set TM on the client to use that drive.
Then I unmounted the shared drive and started TM.
It mounted the remote drive (without displaying it in Finder) and opened the sparseimage, showing the "Time Machine Backups" volume on the desktop.
So you could use any drive attached to the server to backup any client.
    It worked fine for me.
In the end, I changed my clients to use the (single) shared "Backups" volume which Server.app creates because I can fit all my stuff on one drive.

  • External Hard drive not backed up on Time Machine

One of my Seagate external hard drives has failed. I thought that the Time Machine was backing up its contents onto my other external hard drive - I set it to back up everything including the external HD. However I've looked into the Time Machine & gone back to before the HD failed, & there is no sign of it. Surely its contents should have been saved on there even if it has now failed? I don't understand the Time Machine anyway; it seems to only show me certain parts of the computer contents; it's really hard to see all of what is on there.
Second question; what is the best brand of external HD to buy? I thought Seagate was reliable but I no longer trust it after this failure. Someone on this forum recommended OWC Mercury ProElite series?

    Thanks all,
This is helpful. I am 100% certain I set it to back up everything except the HD it is backing up onto - I remember specifically telling it to back up the other HD -  but strangely, when I open the TM window I cannot see anywhere to specify the folders etc to back up; please see screenshot. All it shows is that the TM back-up drive is excluded. I don't understand where all the preferences have gone? I got this window by clicking 'options'; the only other choice was 'select disk'.
Anyway, if as you say they are not included even if you expressly tell it to back them up, maybe including them has no effect. I will try the shift-command-C thing & see if that helps.
    Thanks.

  • HT201250 How to retrieve back up from time machine to a windows machine

    Hello,

Your windows machine will not be able to read it.

  • Folder not backing up in Time Machine

(I'm continuing a previous discussion in this new thread, because the old one was marked "solved" and referred to a file instead of a folder. I think this is the right URL for the thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9023461 .)
Here is my problem: I have a folder that only shows the current ("Now") version when I "Enter Time Machine". I do not see any previous versions of that folder, and so have no access to its contents from the past. I have not excluded this nor any other folder from backup. Either this folder is being backed up but old versions are not kept, or (more likely) it's not getting backed up.
Any ideas on correcting this, avoiding it, and detecting it when it occurs?

Here is the best candidate I could find from Time Machine Buddy. It was listed as Feb 11 2009, 10:07:08. I don't think it explained what happened. (I'll add that using TMB is tough because there is no searching, and TMB resets to the most recent activity when I close & open the Dashboard. It is also tough to use Console because it doesn't seem to display all the data at once, and the "Earlier" & "Later" buttons can't choose a day or be very specific. I can filter on backupd I'd like the filter to show all days.) Anyway, here's what I have from TMB.

  • Why is my external drive not backing up in Time Machine?

I am running Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro.  I have my photo library on an external drive.  I have a 2nd external drive which I use for my Time Machine backups.  I keep the photo drive connected when I backup to Time Machine.  The photo drive is NOT excluded in Time Machine preferences.
While I have the photo drive connected, it appears in all of the Time Machine backups.
However....when I disconnect the photo drive (as would happen if it was lost, stolen, damaged, etc) and then I enter Time Machine, the photo drive does not appear and neither does my iPhoto library that I keep on the photo drive.  Does this mean it is not backing up?  What would I do if I lost the photo drive?

Does this mean it is not backing up?
    No.
What would I do if I lost the photo drive?
    This.

  • OS X Lion does not boot when my Time Machine disk is connected

Everytime I boot or reboot my MacBook Pro I am stuck at the grey screen and OS X Lion will not boot. When I disconnect my Time Machine disk (external disk connected via usb) I suddenly get the loading screen and OS X Lion boots properly.
Pretty anoying I think, does anyone have a solution for this problem?

Have a look at the boot log messages, using Console.app (also with the "dmesg" command), and see if there's a clue there, or, set the boot process logging to "verbose" (i.e., using TinkerTool System) and find out what's really going on live at boot time.  (Also, do you have BootCamp setup, or any ofther bootable partitions?)
    Hope this helps.
