HT201250 Lost important files on Time machine it is decrypting now.

I recently had to install OSX lion I screwed up something with bootcamp, I deleted the partition and then lost a hundred gigs of space on my harddrive that I really needed. Before I did a clean install, I backed up three times with in an hour with time machine. I checked to make sure everything was there which it was.
After the clean install I plugged in timemachine it asked me for a password I typed it in, it asked me to set up a new timemachine and I did with out encryption it also kepted my old backups so i restored all the folders I needed and left it to run over night, when I woke up my timemachine disk was decrypting and I thought nothing of it.
When i got to work I noticed that a bunch of files from the last two weeks were missing and half my music collection and a bunch of other files that I didn't need as much as the work files.
I noticed that I only had stuff from two weeks prior.
My downloads folder was up to day from what I had on tuesday and except my documents folder and my music folder.
When I got home  checked my timemachine ever all those files are missing, I nearly passed out in fear knowing that I need this work files due by friday and I don't have time to recreate EVERYTHING.
I backed up on the 14th of January, and for some weird reason the files from that day that should be on my computer are not there either. Files I knew I had. Files that i could update intime for friday if they so happen to of been there.
It's almost like timemachine erased all those files I NEEDED just to **** me off.
Time machine is currently Decrypting the backup disk and it's at 35% which means it's going to take about 48 hours to get to finished based on the time it has taken to get this far.
I guess what I am freaking out about is not knowing if those files will be recovered once the timemachine has finished decrypting.
What's really strange is disk utiliy on the mac states the drive is open and not encrypted.
On the recovery HD it won't even let me look at the drive because it is locked.
diskutil cs list in terminal with lion shows this
Name:         T***************

This does not update or change as the decryption process gets farther along.
Does anyone know if once the decryption process completes my files will magically appear?
What's weird is if I go into the time machine on the Tuesday jan 17th to look at the backuplog file. It says it's locked and I can't even copy it to my desktop and open it with out saying it's locked.
What is also weird the farther along the decryption process goes, it's elimination my three backups of Jan 17th I am only down to one now...
Really FREAKING OUT....

Factory reset the TC and redo the setup.. any time you change network the TC needs to be redone.

Whether or not you are able to recover the data off the drive yourself will depend on if the drive suffered any impact damage in the crash. You can buy USB SATA or IDE adapters (Intel and almost all G5 use SATA) that will let you connect your hard drive to a computer (like a flash drive) to see if you can recover the data. If the drive has suffered physical damage if may not mount.
If you know someone who has one of these adapters you could try using theirs, otherwise you could buy one but you take the risk of the data on the drive being non recoverable. Regardless, both are much cheaper than $1699!
(Alternatively, if you know of someone with a Mac Pro or PowerMac G5 they may be able to install the drive in their machine and try to boot from or mount it and copy the data off.)

  • HT201250 Deleting Laptop Files with Time Machine

Is it OK to delete excess files from my laptop now that they are on the external back up drive using toime machine?

Time Machine is NOT an archive.  If the files do not exist on your main drive, Time Machine will eventually delete them from its backups.
If you need an archive, then get another external drive, plus get Time Machine to backup that drive as well.
You do NOT want your archive on the same drive as the backup because if the backup disk dies, you will have lost both the backup and the archive.
If you need space on your Macbook Pro, then try using a tool like OmniDiskSweeper to find where all your space is currently being used.  Focus on storage under /Users/...  Be careful about touching anything NOT in /Users/... as it is most likely important to the operating system, especially /private/var/vm where you will find huge files, but they are needed for paging and swapping by the OS.
If cleaning up stuff in your /Users/... folder tree does not give you the space you need, consider replacing your internal disk with a larger disk, or having your DVD drive removed and putting another disk in the DVD drive's space (there are kits for that, and companies that will do this for you).
But DO NOT use Time Machine as an archive, it will delete the data eventually.

  • HT201250 Time Machine backup then install new SSD HD + Pulling files from Time Machine from 'old' HD

    Hi Guys,
I currently have a mid 2009 Macbook pro and I decided to upgrade the current HD in it to an Intel 330 SSD. Which might I add was a *gongshow*.
Anyways before I did the switch I used Time Machine to back up all my information, and to be double redundant I backed up the REALLY important information on a 8gig flashdrive.
The removal and reinstall of the new drive went smooth, and once lion was installed I did all the usual system updates.
Once it came to importing files from Time Machine is when my hassle started.
The last backup I did on Time Machine with the old HD still installed was at 10:00 this morning.
I had the new SSD up and running and a new backup of that created by 1:00 (3 hours later).
When I loaded up Time Machine to grab some files off of my 10:00 backup, it would not let me. The current backups have a Grey/Silver snapshot, and the backups from the OLD HD were blacked out and I could not click on them. What can I do to get these files off my Time Machine from the old HD?
    Thanks

    Quick followup question,
If I do a migrate with the time machine will the system be updated to the version I had when I made it (10.8.6 I think) or will I have to do the system updates afterwards. If so, will that cause any clashes when applying the time machine migration?

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • How can I retrieve a lost file in Time Machine?

    Hi,
I'm using a Western Digital Elements 1TB external hard drive to back up my MacBook Pro.
One day, I noticed that one of my fiels were missing, so I went in to the time machine looked for it (roughly the time period when I created it),
    but it wasn't there.
Is it possible to loose files in time machine?
Is there any way to retrieve them?
    Please help.
    Thanks

Note: the User's Library is hidden by default. It's also hidden in Time Machine. You have to be in the User's Library in order to restore items from Time Machine.
Under Go in the Menu bar hold down the Option key and select Library.
    Scroll down to the 'stickiesdatabase'
If you don't see the file, open Stickies and create a new test sticky. This will create the 'stickiesdatabase'  file.
Once you see the file, select the file.
    Enter Time Machine.
You should enter in your User's Library showing the file.
Go back in time to when your actual file existed with your data.
    Select Restore.

  • HT201250 How can I find a file on Time Machine.

The file was on my Desktop at one time but has been deleted. Typing it's name in the TM Spotlight field and clicking the Back Button (per the TM tutorial) doesn't work. Has anyone found a specific file on Time Machins that is no longer on the Mac?

First of all, I don't work for Apple and neither do most people who post here. This is primarily a user community.
The documentation is correct, even if you didn't have any success. I prefer to use mende1's suggestion, so I don't use Spotlight in Time Machine.
I understand you are frustrated, as I would be if it didn't work. Computer frustration isn’t one of my favorite pastimes.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

On your iMac launch iTunes and at the top next to the Apple symbol click iTunes > Preferences > Devices and tell me what you see. You last sync should be there showing only a device name. If you have an older backup it will be there as well the difference is it will be the device name with a date and time stamp. Sync and backups are two different things and there is a chance iTunes made a backup the first time you hooked up your iPhone 5.

lost word document.  time machine no help. suggestions?

Need more info. How do you think you lost a Word Document?
Try Easy Find, Search program, and search for *.doc*. That will turn up all Word Docs with both the .DOC and .DOCX extension on your complete hard drive.
If it is truly lost, Deleted, then you are basically SOL. Unless you do have a recent TM backup that has that file included.
As for recovering it from TM do a search for Pondini TM FAQs.

  • Can i upgrade to 10.6 snow leopard then restore files with time machine?

I have an early 2006 iMac with 10.5.8, and I am having hard drive problems.  I want to reformat my drive, then install 10.6.  Can I do that, then restore my files with Time Machine?  Will it restore applications?

Yes, you can use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant. When you launch SL for the first time it will ask if you are migrating from another Mac, select yes and then indicate the TM drive. Connect the TM drive to the machien and let it migrate what you want (Settings, Apps, Data etc..). It's important to connect the TM drive via USB or Firwire, DO NOT select Wi-Fi.

  • How do you retrieve individual files from Time Machine?

If a file original is lost or becomes corrupted, is there anyway to retrieve that individual files from Time Machine? If so, how?

Time Machine finds that file, and not other files that meet the criteria. BUT...
That's not what TM was doing. My search criteria was "by filename", however when I try to go backwards in TM, that limit is lost and it appears to be returning every file in the rolled-up weekly archive. This is especially odd, because I have since determined that the file was actually corrupted before TM was running, so there should be only one version of the file in TM's archives.
No, it was a file sitting on my disk. Email was mentioned, because the fact that every email in every junk folder appears as a separate item to be restored, which is what triggers that little "too many files to show you at one time" issue.
So your name search returned lots of junk mail items. I shudder to think what the file name was that you were searching for! <g>
Also: you can tell Time Machine to ignore your junk mail if you've filtered the junk mail in Mail into a different folder/box.
I figured that one out. I had used Spotlight to find the junk mailboxes, but couldn't, only the messages "labeled" junk. I had to use 'find' in Terminal.app to actually find Mail's junk & spam folders.
Yeah, it's hard to find stuff when you don't know where it is <g>. In general, though, for these kinds of things, always think: "Library" which is where SO many pieces of programs are stored. Of course, there's lots of Library folders, so your first job is to decide: system or user level? Realizing more than one user account could have email setups, you can assume the path you need starts at the User level. So, you start at Home[UserName]/Library. Scanning that Library folder, you see a Mail folder (aha!). Checking out that folder, you might first suspect the Mailboxes subfolder, but you'll soon see that it has the mailboxes you've defined for sorting your mail; so, you continue to scan the Mail folder and you see a folder with your email address on it (or multiple folders, one for each of your emails). Open one of those and, ta da! You see something labeled junk.mbox.
You've already found your Junk mail, of course, but I'm suggesting this as a general approach, especially for other readers of this thread, who might not want to touch Terminal.
But, back to one of your initial problems: TM seemed to lose your search criteria. Do you think it was related to the high number of " hits"? Does it work for you otherwise, when you search for something less general?

Since you haven't upgraded your iPhone from 4.3 there will also not be an iCloud back-up.,,, so.....
So there is no way to restore it, but before you start rekeying your contacts you should.
    1.  Back it up on Itunes (11.0.1) and a computer, it will help you upgrade your IOS (6.0.1) at the same time.
    2.  When complete ensure you have a back-up.
    3.  Set-up iCloud and iCloud back-up
    4.  Start keying....
    Sorry in advance..

  • Delete outlook file from time machine?

am trying to install a back up of Outlook Main Identity from time machine. it stops running midway, saying there is a read/write error (Error code -36) and that the offending file is ###_#####.olk14MsgAttach, which appears to be an attachment to an email. Can this file be deleted from Outlook on the backup disk, with out messing up the overall reinstallation of Main Identity? Thank you.

    Ewen,
Let me make my self more clear.
Because of the Apple KB article regarding Aperture and Time Macine, that's exactly why i chose to EXCLUDE my aperture.library file from time machine.
Please don't read any negative tone in this, i'm just trying to explain myself.
But hind sight is 20/20, so i was looking for a way to delete the old previous version of the aperture.library that was sitting on my backup time machine drive (useless taking up space)
I apologize for not searching out that KB article, but i didn't think i'd have to do that. I assumed Apple would know how to have Aperture play nice with Time Machine....
Any way all is good. we're all educated now
