HT201250 My MacBook is full. I want to 'save' (backup) everything on my Time Capsule and then reset my MacBook to factory settings so it is empty again. Can I access my files on the TC without restoring the whole thing to my MacBook?
I also bought a WD My Book 2T external hard drive, but I think I wasted my money. The thing is not easy to navigate. I bought it because I didn't understand (and still don't really) how the Time Capsule works. I want to be able to basically 'reformat' my MacBook so it is empty, but have all my current stuff accessable so that if I want to find a photo or file, I don't have to restore the entire thing back onto my MacBook.
Then what you want is a Carbon Copy Cloner of your entire OS X boot partition which includes everything (OS X, programs and files) and is hold the option key bootable at boot up (wired or built in keyboard) this way you can boot from it or use Migration or Setup Assistant against it, or access it directly from any computer capable of reading the HFS+ format (Windows PC needs MacDrive installed)
It's like the ultimate backup system, just blows TimeMachine and TimeCapsule away completely in almost every manner.
You need another backup anyway in case TC wasn't doing it's job. With the clone you can check it out completely before erasing the original drive too.
Most commonly used backup methods
So you need a blank powered external drive formatted Partition: 1 option: GUID and format OS X extended journaled in Disk Utility, use the Erase > Secure >Zero (or middle selection in 10.7+) and allow that work, may take a few hours but it's good for all new drives to be done once.
Next download CCC and select your boot drive and clone it to the external drive, then when it's finished you hold the option key down (wired or built in keyboard) and while booting up (Startup manager) to select the clone to boot from and check it out.
Next you need to use Disk Utility (on the clone) and select the Macintosh HD partition of the internal drive and use the Secure Zero Erase (or middle selection) and allow that to work, it will scrub your drive of everything.
Next you install OS X again.

Next you install your free iLife and third party programs from original sources
Restoring your Free iLife (iPhoto, iMovie etc)
Then you can cherry pick just want you want off the clone drive.

Can i access my sync while on holiday without destroying the data
im on holiday with a new laptop but would like to access my sync'd data , when i set up my sync account i had to use a pass phrase but this is all changed now to a encrypted key ( which i cant get cause im on holiday ) if i get a new key will it really delete all my passwords and favs ? surely that does away with the point of having a sync system ?

Sorry, if you change your Sync Key all your data on the server will be erased. You should have setup Sync in that new laptop before you left home, while you had access to the device which was connected to Sync.
As far as the "point" of Firefox Sync, the way I see it the system is set up to synchronize your personal data as that data changes, and the next time you use a different device which is connected to that Sync account, the changes will be sent to that "different device". And changes made on that "different device" will be sent to the Sync server as changes happen there. Firefox Sync is not meant as a "backup device" or for long term storage of data or for giving the user access to that data from a web interface on a device that can't connect to the Sync service. Features like that may come along in the future. -
Backing up personal files to Time capsule and then upgrading to Leopard
Hi.
I recently bought the upgrade disks to Leopard from 10.4.11.
i also bought Time capsule.
I was advised in the store to save all my personal files (photos, I tunes library, work) to time capsule, then perform a clean upgrade to Leopard, the replace all my personal files to my iMac, then doing the complete system back up to the time capsule.
I have managed to get the iMac talking to Timecapsule, I can print so this is all cool, but how do I save all my personal data to the timecapsule? I'm sorry if this is too daft a question, but I have tried seeing if there was an intuitive way of learning this on the Mac but as these files are so important, I really don't want to make a mistake that would lead to me losing everything.

M.in the Finder use the Go command (top file menu) and in the window type afp://10.0.1.1 or whatever your TC ip address is, then you should be able to access that hard drive. you should use Airport Utility to assign a password to your TC hard drive.

An iPhone can only sync with one computer at a time. All of the music you want on your phone must be on the same computer. -

I have upgraded my ipad2 to the latest ios. shortly after this message came up: "ipad is disabled, connect to itunes". I have never synced my ipad2 to itunes and don't have any backup. Is there any way to bypass this without restoring the device? I have many articles on "iAnnotate" that can not afford to loose.
You can't bypass it, you will need to connect iPad to a computer's iTunes, and you may need to put it into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 - you should then be able to reset the iPad, which will remove all content from it.
You haven't been backing up to the cloud either, and/or keeping copies of important documents/files elsewhere e.g. on your email account, Dropbox etc ? -
How do I change/delete an iTunes Store account on the phone without restore
You know when you buy an App from the App Store it asks for your password because it's tied to the email of the account with your credit card info etc etc. Is this possible to take off/change without restoring the phone?

My friend's iPod touch 5th gen is locked somehow for 41 years and she does not have a backup. Is there a way to unlock the iPod without restoring it or loosing the pictures and videos from the camera roll, the applications can be redownloaded and she had no music. Your friend may have placed the ipod next to an object that repeatedly pressed the screen. Under certain circumstances this can lead to what appears to the iTouch to be failed attempts to access the system. After repeated failed attempts, the Touch increases the waiting time required for the password and may ultimately lock in the way you describe.

My 4th Gen iPod Nano isn't displaying a "Use iTunes to restore" message, but iTunes is displaying a restore message when I connect it. I have original music that I can't back up on my iPod. Is there any way that I can fix the iPod without restoring it?
It's not designed to work like this. When you sync, the iPod stores some information that basically says 'this iPod belongs to computer xyz'. Apple did this to prevent copyright issues (syncing someone else's music).
If you really want to do this, you'll have to at least tie both iTunes installations to the same account. Maybe have them sync with each other. -
Hi, I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to disconnect internet connection in Time Capsule and reconnect without restarting the whole device?
The thing is that as I have a dynamic IP address, everytime I restart the internet connection my IP address changes. I sometimes need it to change, so I need to restart the connection. I don't know another way to restart the connection than restarting the whole Time Capsule.

PD: the computer I use is Windows based, using the Airport Utility for Windows, but I also have a MacBook Pro I could use and an iPhone too.The utility in windows is very like Mac so the screenshots are from Mac as I don't have windows available now.
How this works depends on the setup of the TC.. which you did not tell us.. you cannot change anything if you do not have the TC as the main router in the network.
So on the internet tab you need to share a public IP address.
On the next tab where you set IP address.
Click the renew IP address.
It might work.. and it might not.. the problem is you are not disconnecting the network.. sometimes the hard disconnection is required before the address will renew..
What about unplugging the WAN port.. then click renew the IP which will fail.. then plug the wan back in again.
In the end it is easier and faster to power cycle the TC. -
I have my iPhone 4s backed up on my mac but it seems it was encrypted with a password which i do not remember is there any other option to retrieve to the backup without restoring the device as a new one. Also I do not have access to a windows system.
Sorry no, if you don't knnow the encrypted password, then you can't use that backjup.

I'm running iTunes 10.5 on my Macbook Pro and software 4.1 on my 2g iPod touch and having problems getting photo's to sync. Same error, "iPod can't be synced req'd file can't be found". Tried deleting the photo cache, restoring the iPod etc but to no avail.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files? When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them. See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.

Not sure what you mean. You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.
