HT201250 My new external drive is not asking if I want to use it with Time Machine?

How do I get Time Machine setup on this hard drive?

Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences and set it up.

I have a Seagate Freeagent 1TB external drive that ejects it's self in the middle of the time machine backup, then disappears and can't be found unless I turn it off and back on again. Any ideas?

Hmmm.. sorry to jump in but...
I Wish I had seen this before I got mine.
Mine has been doing this auto eject stuff too.
I think I just plugged it in and TM let me select it but is it possible
I should have reformatted it with DU first, like with all the WD drive problems ?
Is it too late for that ?
Or just try to return it or get rid of it ?
    TIA

What do you mean it isn't' compatible?  What isn't compatible?
There is no limit to the number of iPods you can sync to one computer, iTunes library, or iTunes account.  Simply connect each separate iPod/iPhone to your computer and configure each to sync whatever content you wish to.

What IP address does the TC have and what IP does the computer have?
We need more info as we really have no idea what your network looks like.
Modem router, model, type of broadband?
TC setup as bridge or router?
Is the computer getting internet via the TC?
Are you using wireless or ethernet?
Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

  • My 750GB Maxtor external HD will not mount on my iMac 10.7.5 for Time Machine

This external drive has worked in the past; I had used it to successfully back up the same computer I'm using now. After attempting another long overdue backup, it aborted mid-way. I discovered some chew marks on the power cord and replaced it. The replacement power cord is the proper one, and the light on the Maxtor is on indicating power. I've tried two different USB spots, both of which work on other devices. However, now the Maxtor will not mount. My intention was to completely erase the Maxtor and start clean. Never got a chance. I've verified that the Finder Prefs have external disks checked.  Finder doesn't "see" it. Disk Utility doesn't "see" it. Time Machine doesn't "see" it. My desktop doesn't "see" it. Another external I have (WD My Passport Ultra) does mount. Is OS 7.5 the problem? How do I verify that the Maxtor is just plain busted before I throw it out the window?  Or have I already proved that? It was never used enough to fail, it seems to me. Anybody?

Rats. Thank you for the quick reply, rkaufmann87. I'm not awash in other USB cables of this type, but will hold out hope until I get my hands on one. Time to shop for another external probably. Thanks again. [sighs]

  • I'm not bald yet, but will be after messing with Time Machine

Intel iMac Rev B. Two external drives, both less than 6 months old, one less than a week old. Maxtor 750GB, Seagate Freeagent Pro 1TB (bought last week).
Per previous support posts, Time Machine stopped working smoothly after my update from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3. After working that issue out, it seemed to be working again.
Long story short, I can't get TM to work on either drive. I have erased, re-partitioned (in the correct format for the Intel iMac), restarted TM and I get a multitude of issues. Sometimes the initial back up goes through, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the backups work as they should for a week, and sometimes, stop working after the first incremental backup.
I went out last week and bought the Seagate to confirm the problem wasn't a hard drive issue. I'm finding it next to impossible that I've got two bad drives that won't work with Time Machine, so I clearly think this is an Apple Software issue. As now I've got the Maxtor drive partitioned and doing A and B backups with SuperDuper.
It's getting expensive buying external harddrives. What other support for Time Machine is out there?
**Note - I have not applied the latest 10.5.5 update yet....anybody find that Time Machine works better with that update??**
    Thanks.

  • I have a Seagate 3TB external hard drive and was using it with time machine on my old system with Snow Leopard and it was working smoothly. I have now upgraded to Mavericks and when I tried setting up time machine again, it did not work.

The OS does not detect the drive when I start the system, but Disk Utility shows the disk as an external drive. I seem to be going around in circles. Please take a look at the following screen grabs for the errors I am getting.

But When I verify The sub-partition in the Disk (disk4s2), it asks me to repair disk. When I try to repair disk, it gives me this error.

  • Very elementary doubt, but... can i use the rest free space of Airport Time Capsule as a Hard Drive (copy and paste files freely, from my MacAir SSD to the Time Capsule), besides use it with Time Machine at the same time?

Cant find it clearly in tutorials...

You can do it.. should you do it is another question.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. Think this out very clearly.. how and to where are you going to backup your files. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • Confused - Using Time Capsule as External HD and Using TC With Time Machine

    Hello,
I've been using my Time Capsule for about a month now and I am very pleased. I have only been using it as an external hard drive as I wasn't really worried about backing EVERYTHING up. Yesterday my macbook's internal drive messed up and after reinstalling all my apps I've decided that running Time Machine would be a good idea.
So, I currently have 120 GBs of stuff on my 500 GB Time Capsule. Can I simply create a folder on the Time Capsule and set Time Machine to make backups to that folder? Also, is there a way I can limit how much space Time Machine will take up without partitioning the drive?
    Thanks in advance,
    Josh.

time machine will make a sparse bundle in your TC - so no need to make a folder.
"Also, is there a way I can limit how much space Time Machine will take up without partitioning the drive? "
no, you can not limit the space, and you can not partition the TC drive unless you physically take it out of the box, put it in a firewire enclosure, partition, than put it all back.
for this reason, i use superduper for my backups.

  • Map shared network drive from a Win XP pro machine to use with Time Machine

I have an external USB hard drive connected to a Windows XP Pro computer. The drive has two partitions that I created on my mac. One is a formated for Time Machine and one formated in fat for windows.
When connected by USB to the mac I can access both partitions and Time Machine works great. When connected to the XP I can only see and access the fat partition but Time Machine does not see it.
My goal is to have the external drive connect by USB to the XP machine (because it is always on and connected) and use the external drive to backup the pc by USB and the Mac with time machine over my wireless.
Can I do this and where am I going wrong?

Tech support advised me that this will not work. Time Machine can not backup to an shared network drive unless unless it is connected to Time Capsule. No doubt this is a marketing strategy and not a design flaw.

  • I bucked up my files with Time Machine, but I am not able to see my pictures from the external hard drive

    Hi all,
When I open the iphoto library in my hard drive, its says that I have to open iphotos with the "control" option. So I did it and opened a "different library" and try again to do it from the extrenal drive, but again, its says the same thing. Please help! I would like to be sure all my back ups pictures are there and be able to watch them
    Thanks in advance!

A Time Machine backup of the iPhoto Library is not useabel by iPhoto until you Restore it with Time Machine.  To restore the library go into Time Machine, go to the date you want, located your Pictures folder, select the library and use the Restore button.
Be warned that this will overwrite your current library so if it's just a test select Save Both in the window that comes up.

  • Backing up an external storage hard drive with time machine

I have a setup with an external hard drive on which I store photos etc. I also back up my desktop with time machine to a separate external. I want to back up my photo drive to this external through time machine and a tech at the apple store showed me how to remove the external drive from the excluded list and include it in the regular time machine backups. When I go to set this up with my own computer however, the - symbol is greyed out and I am unable to select the hard drive. If anyone has any solutions I am all ears!

If it's listed in gray, not black, it means the disk isn't formatted +Mac OS Extended,+ and Time Machine cannot back it up.
You'll have to copy the data elsewhere temporarily, reformat the drive (see #1 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]), then copy it back.

  • Help using connect hard drive with Time Machine

My iMac and the two wirelessly connect apple laptops all recognize the Western Digital MYBookWorld 500gb external hard drive. We can all write to it and retrieve files. We are using a Lynksys router to which the iMac and WD drive are connected directly while the laptops connect wirelessly.
We are trying to use it with TIME Machine, but when we try to set up time machine, the drive does not show up as an option for the back up disc.
I have read through several old discussions about not recognizing the disc at all, but this is not our problem. Anyone with ideas?

Hello Taxi Driver and welcome to Apple Discussion!
In short to use the External HD for the current backup and TimeMachine you will need to repartition it creating a partition for each. The down side at this point, is that in order to repartition the external the current data on it will be erased. When setting up the External for TimeMachine set the Partition Map Scheme to GUID Partition Table and the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    A couple of options:
    1. Backup the current files on the External HD to one of your Mac's, then repartition it with 2 partitions, then use the 1st for TimeMachine and copy back the files to the 2nd partition.
    2. Safer and easier way is to pickup a second external and set it up for TimeMachine.
