HT201250 My time capsule has failed a back-up

Having issues with my time capsule not sure what to do about it. The error message says time machine couldn't complete the backup to the time capsule (Mac mini.sparsebundle” is already in use). I don't know what this means or how to fix the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

It means that there are bugs in Mavericks.
The down and dirty fix:
Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten slowly
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes and try another backup
Please report on your results
Or, post back if want to try a bit more elegant "fix"

I have a home network and until yesterday all was working well with my back-ups through Time Machine onto my Time Capsule.  Now all of a sudden it's only backing up one machine and not the other, and none of my backups done previously on the second machine are showing.  How do I fix this???

  • Time capsule has failed.  How can I erase TC HD before disposal?

My generation 1 500 GB TC has failed. Is there any way I can erase its HD to prepare fr disposal?

OK. I plugged in an internet cable between the old TC (the one that I replaced with a new 2TB TC) and my MBP with the wi-fi turned off.  The old TC blinked amber and later changed to green.  It now shows up in Network Preferences, as being connected via ethernet, and with the name I formerly used for that TC.  I stopped short of configuring it.  It asked if I wanted to use it to extend my network, but I did not want to do that unless I had a good reason to.  In Airport Utility both TCs show up.  There was an option somewhere that I ran across to erase the TC when it shows both, but the HD it shows to erase is the one on the new TC (and not in the TC I thought failed).
If I can find a good use for the old TC I want to keep it.  If not, I would like to erase its HD.  Apparently I cannot get to its HD to erase it unless I configure it.  Not sure.  Advice?
Can you think of any good use (such as to extend the network)?  I really do not know what an extended network would do for me.

  • After I downloaded Mountain Lion my Time Capsule has virtually stopped backing up. It took 4 hours to back up 600MB out 68 GB

    Hi Everyone,
My last backup using my MacBook Pro to my Time Machine was July 23,2012 my OS was Lion. Then I downloaded Mountain Lion and it 4 hours to backup 600MB out of 68GB. I tried agian and noticed something I have never seen before, KB's. Before Mountain Lion I could backup 58GB in 4 hours. Whats going on and does anyone else have a similar experience?
    Robert A.

    Hi Pondini from Florida,
I am on my 5th hour. I took your advice and connected via an Ethernet cable . So far I have backed up 53.92 GB of 68.88GB. It's very slow but it appears to be working. I never had this problem when I downloaded Lion. At least it didn't t take as long and that was on WiFi. Thanks for your help and insight on this issue.

    Hello,
Thanks for your message, I have attempted to repait the permissions as tou suggested.  The first time this produced a long list of exceptions and took quite a while, however although it said "Permissions repair Complete" when I ran it again there were still about 20 exceptions, I have repeated the procedure and this is unchanged.  The Time Capsule now does not spend hours "Preparing", but the backup attempt fails after a few minutes with the error message "The backup volume could not be mounted."  Any further ideas would be appreciated.   When I use Disk Utility I can't see the Time Capsule volume, if I could I'd be tempted to re-format it and start from scratch.

"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
I have gone into Mac Help and followed this down to stage 4:
under shared it lists my time capsule and my husband's iMac - both use the time machine but we have switched his off temporarily.  Clicking on my Time capsule I get "Connected" and "Sharepoint" - I didn't have to enter connect or password
I don't understand stage 5: how and where do I select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups ?  How do I know which it is? My disk utility lists 160.04 TOSHIBA MK... with sub-heading Macintosh HD.  It also lists (with a "CD" icon) HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS22N
Under stage 6, how and where do I Locate your backup ? I try dragging my Time capsule from Finder to the Disk Utility side panel but it won't go.  What is my computer's name?
Please someone help!  I'm completely stumped.
    Thanks,
    Maggie
    Mac Help says:
If you back up to a Time Capsule or network disk:
Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and slide the switch to Off.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Disk Utility
Make sure the Time Capsule or network disk is turned on and available.
Open a Finder window, select your Time Capsule or network disk in the Shared section of the sidebar, and click Connect. If necessary, enter your user name and password.
On the Time Capsule or network disk, select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups. Depending on how your Time Capsule is set up, there may be one or more disks or volumes.
Locate your backup, and drag it to the Disk Utility sidebar. You can identify your backup by looking for your computer’s name in the backup’s filename.

  • I am getting this error when time machine tries to back up to a time capsule.  "The backup disk image "/Volumes/JUDY ARCENEAUX's Time Capsu-1/JUDY ARCENEAUX's MacBook Air.sparsebundle" is already in use."  Same time capsule has worked in the past.

First, restart the computer and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this should solve the problem.

  • How can I be sure that the back up to my time capsule has backed everything up as when I enter time capsule and interogate the back ups i can't identify individual music or picture files?

How can I confirm that the back up to my time capsule has backed everything up as when I enter time capsule and interrogate the backs ups I can't identify individual photo or music files?

You cannot browse a Time Machine backup with the Finder. To restore individual music files or any other files normally available in the Finder, open your Music folder then "Enter Time Machine" using the Time Machine icon.
Restoring individual photographs is slightly more cumbersome. Apple recommends restoring the entire iPhoto Library, but if you want to locate an individual photograph you could use Time Machine to restore the old Libary. Restore it to an alternate location to avoid overwriting your existing one. Open iPhoto while holding an Option key, open the restored Library, find the photo you need and export it, close iPhoto, re-open it with your usual Library, and import the photo.
Time Machine depends upon a number of sound engineering principles for reliable operation, one of which is "faith"
Your files will remain intact until your Time Machine backup device becomes inoperative.

Sorry we are unclear as to the external hard drive and its connection to the TC..
For instance the light that blinks.. is that the TC or external hard disk or what.
Did you try just rebooting / restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router / TC.. external drive.. clients with 2min gap between each.
Are you actually running Snow Leopard as the profile states?
    How old is the TC?

  • Looking for a back up drive for photos and videos that works with time machine, prefer wireless. Time capsule has poor reviews and already have BT hub

Looking for a back up drive for photos and videos that works with time machine, prefer wireless. Time capsule has poor reviews and already have BT hub that serves as a good router. 3gb or 4gb capacity preferred but 2 would suffice.

Plug a NAS into the BT Hub that does TM. Look at Synology.
You just use the wireless of the hub.
But the cheapest solution is still the TC.

  • MacBook Pro logs out before Time Capsule has finished backing up

I can't seem to get the initial back-up done, my MacBook Pro logs out before Time Capsule has a chance to finish backing up, approximately 95GB to complete and it only gets to 12 or 15GB. Any ideas?

  • Move external Time Machine HD to Time Capsule.  FAIL.

Mac has a USB port. Time Capsule has a USB port. External hard drive can plug in to either. Apple doesn't seem to have anticipated that someone might want to move a disk from one to the other and expect their Time Machine backups to continue to work.
It tries and fails to to an initial full backup, instead of an incremental.
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.01 TB but only 763.51 GB are available.
This device has had way to many FAILs.
The cure, as usual, seems to be to start all over using ethernet.
    Any convenient solutions?

Maybe too late to try, but the following would be the basic steps to transfer a Time Machine (TM) backup from a local attached drive to the Time Capsule (TC):
o Within TM preferences, select the TC as the destination for backups.
o Start the initial backup to the TC.
o As soon as TM completes the “Preparing backup” phase and before it starts copying data, move the switch to Off.
o Using Finder, navigate to the TC volume. Look for the disk image. It should be named something like Your Mac's Name.sparsebundle. Double-click this file to mount the disk image.
o Drag this disk image to the Trash, and then, be sure to empty the Trash.
o Drag the Backups.backupdb folder from your previous TM backup's (external drive) volume to the disk image where you just deleted the folder in the previous step.
    o Eject the disk image.
    o Switch TM back On.

  • First Time Capsule HD fail, after exchange, 2nd TC Wifi Failed.

I'm very upset with Apple that such a product with obvious defects would be released to the market. I purchased a TC 500GB last Thursday, setup it up on Friday morning, after 1 hour of use, I plugged in a NTFS HD drive. Obvious, the TC was not compatible with this, so I unplugged it and rebooted the TC. After that, the internal 500 GB drive was no recognized and nothing I did could restore it. I tried restoring factory settings, and power cycling it. Nothing worked. So I returned the unit and exchanged for another one.
The second time around, I was able to get everything set up that way I wanted. All ethernet ports were connected, a USB hub was use to connect to a canon printer and external HD drive. I transferred about 250 GB of windows data to my external HD overnight and use Time machine to back up my mac book pro. The next day, I ran a virus scanner on my external HD from windows vista. After a few minutes, my network went down completely and I had to reboot TC, but this time, I can't get any wireless device to connect to TC. Wired connection worked, but Wireless became useless. I tried everything I could think of to get it to work. I rebooted, check for updated software and firmware from a wire connection, restore factory settings, enable/disable wireless security and I still couldn't get my Macbook Pro to connect.
After much frustration, it became obvious that Wifi is broken. So within 4 days after purchase, I had 2 Time Capsule 500GB fail on me. The first one had a Hard drive failure and the second one had a Wifi failure. I'm an IT admin guy so I have a good idea if the problem is software or hardware, and it is very clear to me the TC has hardware issues.
In the end I returned my TC today to the apple store for a refund. I'm going to wait another month to buy the TC again. It is really a great product with great features for the price, but the initial production of TC is flawed. Please correct this Apple ASAP.

There is a bug in Lion and made worse rather than fixed in Mountain Lion that causes the disk in the TC to disappear.. exactly what you found.. worse by wireless than ethernet.
Apple have not yet acknowledged there even is an issue.
I don't even have a work around.. it simply doesn't happen on Snow Leopard.. which is rock solid network wise.
A few things I can suggest.. clean install much better than upgrade install of the OS.. certainly problems on laptop wireless can be partly attributed to upgrade install.. if that is what you did.
I would reset the TC full factory settings.
Use all SMB compatible names.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
That is for TC name.. wireless names.. put a different name for 5ghz.. and hard disk name.. which should be data but has sometimes default to Time Capsule.
Lock the radio channels. So use manual settings and try 1, 6 or 11. And using different name for 5ghz you can set the laptop to prefer 5ghz if it is in range.
    Use WPA2 personal security only.
Use very short lease time for DHCP.. 20min is good value and will cause almost no extra network traffic but should keep things updated. You can also use dhcp reservation to keep everyything using the same IP.

  • Time Capsule: Connection Failed on Mavericks

    Hi Everyone,
After updating to OS X Mavericks Time Capsule has started working very unusual.
When Macbook goes to sleep and when you wake it up after hour or a bit more I can't access to Time Capsule's drive: Connection Failed.
If you try reconnect to TC it doesn't help at all. Only the restart of TC helps to solve it.
Meanwhile if you try to connect TC drive with FileBrowser on iPad / iPhone there is no issue.
You can connect at anytime without problems.
Please help me with that question, it make me crazy

Try resetting the Time Capsule. I have done a reset and a full reset (page 28) many times and it has always straightened out the Time Capsule.

28 Chapter 3 Tips and Troubleshooting
If Your Time Capsule Isn’t Responding
Try unplugging it and plugging it back in.
If your Time Capsule stops responding completely, you may need to reset it to the
    factory default settings.
Important: Resetting your Time Capsule to factory default settings erases all of the
current settings and resets them to the settings that came with your Time Capsule.
To return your Time Capsule to the factory settings:
mm Use something pointed (such as a ballpoint pen) to press down and hold the reset
button until the status light flashes quickly (about 5 seconds).
Your Time Capsule resets with the following settings:
ÂÂYour Time Capsule receives its IP address using DHCP.
ÂÂ The network name is reset to Apple Network XXXXXX (where XXXXXX is replaced
with the last six digits of the AirPort ID).
ÂÂ The Time Capsule password is reset to public.
If your Time Capsule still isn’t responding, try the following:
    1 Unplug your Time Capsule.
2 Use something pointed to press and hold down the reset button while you plug in
    your Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule has limited range - Airport Extreme worked fine. Solutions???

I have used Airport Express with my 2 Macs - Mac Pro (near the AE and modem, and MacBook Pro, normally used about 25 feet away, in another room. No problems. UNTIL I added Time Capsule. My access to the internet on the laptop is very, very slow. So bad, in fact, that I unplugged the TC, and am now using the AE once again. I really need to have everything backed up, which is why I bought the 2TB Time Capsule. Does anyone have solutions for this?

    Duane:
I'm getting closer, but still have a problem.
AE has only one channel to work with, and it's set on Channel 1.
However, Time Capsule has two radio channel selections. The 2.4 GHz channel can be set on Channel 1, which I have done. But the 5 GHz channel 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161
I'm going through trial and error with the higher number channels, but have had no success when I move the laptop away from the Time Capsule unit.
