HT201250 My time machine is giving me an error.

My time machine is giving me this error: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Steven C's Time Capsul/Linda’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.It had been backing up fine for years and now all of a sudden it is not. I'm not sure how to fix it. Thanks

The possiblility of recovery according to pondini is remote.. You history is history.. You have no choice but to start over.
I would actually recommend an erase of the TC.. and use the one pass low level format to ensure the drive itself is still good.
Read over Pondini's reply again as he has already answered your questions.

•If your backups are on a Time Capsule’s internal HD, see the green box in  #Q6 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.  The "archived" backups will still be marked as damaged, but you may be able to view and restore some things from them.
ie it is possible but unlikely as they are damaged beyond recovery.. You can run a repair and see if it fixes it.. I would consider building a sand castle to hold back a tidal wave would be equally useful use of your time. If you want decent backups.
1. Use ethernet.
2. Or use local backup disk.. not network. A local disk is cheaper, faster and more reliable than network.
3. Use Crashplan or CCC or Chronosync etc. Keep a disk image of whatever setup you want.. and do not add incrementals to it. They become less reliable when you add more than an image. Use a backup that can produce a bootable image.. and you will then have the ability to recover your computer.. TM can then add the bits you are missing.
Other backup software is not as good as TM at keeping files that you need in many version. They are less complicated but more reliable.

Time Machine keeps giving me an error message when I try to back up to my Lacie drive. It won't back up and I can't find where to fix it.

I was having the same problem with my LaCie hard drives, both of them had errors like that and wouldn't eject properly. They would be fine after turning off and then remounting and so on, but then it would start again after a while. So I looked on LaCie's web site for any software updates and I found a usb firmware update from last October and applied it to both drives and now they're perfect. Sorry, I can't find it on their web site right now, but you might want to remember this if it persists and apply the update if you haven't.

  • Time machine is giving me this error;sparse bundle could not be access (error-1)

The time machine is giving me this error; Disk Image"/Volumes/Data/adminstration Mac Book Pro (2).sparse bundle" could not be access (error-1)

Restart the TC.. ie pull out the power.. count to 10.. plug in power.
Still have issues restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. TC.. clients. 2min gap. Any other network clutter.. restart in order it is connected..
See C17 for more info if you still have issues.

C12 is most popular problem.. but C17 is close second.
I would also read C9 as your naming is perhaps a cause of the problem.

  • Time machine keeps giving me an ERROR message

I got time machine in late December and it does not work all the time.
Lately, Especially, when I click onto the icon in my top "toolbar?" it keeps saying LATEST BACKUP DELAYED and then;when I click onto those words; a box comes up and says LATEST Backup FAILED, (in RED letters). I then click on the red dot that has the white I in it and I get the message " TIME MACHINE ERROR Backup Volume not found."
This does not happen all the time and SOMETIMES I can do a manual back up but not always.
I have even told it to not back up all but a few necessary things but----!
    What do I do?

Were you not plugged in via USB to begin with?
I would recommend performing some resets just to be on the safe side. Unplug the external HD, and try these steps:

You’re running an outdated copy of Safari on your Desktop. That won’t work.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Check that the Safari application is in that folder. If it is, use it, and delete the copy on your Desktop. Never move or copy built-in applications.
If you've deleted Safari from the Applications folder, back up all data, then reinstall OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • WEIRD "Time Machine could not complete Backup" error

So this started back in Leopard 10.5.
I used Time machine once and didn't like it so I turned it off and unhooked the external drive.
Ever since that time, I get a Time Machine could not complete Backup error window that pops up every  2 hours or so it seems.
I updated to Snow Leopard and still got this problem all the way up to 10.6.8.
I have now updated to Lion and I STILL get this stupid annoying error.
My TM is OFF and there are no drives selected anywhere.
    What should I do ?

Very true, I didn't even tink about that... but.....
I did have TimeMachineEditor but it was already set to OFF.
I also had another program (Time Machine Scheduler) that was also set to off.
****, I would have loved it to be that !!!

I keep receiving the error message Unknown error - error code -43 everytime I try to open my time machine and it won't back up... I can't update to Lion and I'm getting really freaking frustrated!!

Don't rely upon just TimeMachine as a sole backup system, it's problematic and very hard to manually recover from if there is a problem.

  • HT201250 After Time Machine has backed up my files, can I delete my originals from my Mac and do something in Time Machine to ensure it will never automatically delete them from the backup in the future?

I'm new to using Time Machine - I'm making my first backup right now - and I have a few concerns.
So let's say my precious photos are taking up most of my Mac's hard drive space. I back them up with Time Machine on an external hard drive. After that, I want to delete my photos from my Mac because I want more space and my photos are now stored in the external hard drive. I have a few questions about that.
First, does Time Machine's backup system follow the same concept as having extra storage (so would this be a reasonable decision to make)?
Second, if it does, then could I access/open these photos from Time Machine's backup anytime I want?
Third, would I need to use the restore backup function of Time Machine every time I want to open my photos are there alternative ways of accessing my photos, like through opening directory paths to the photos?
Lastly, when the external hard drive becomes full and Time Machine wants to delete my oldest backup files, what can I do to ensure that these photos will never get deleted unless I manually do it? Like, is there a way to lock and secure these files? Or, is it like if these photos are the only copies saved in the backup, I can rest assure that Time Machine will never delete them?
    Thanks

Since my new external hard drive is have a lot of space, I'm thinking of splitting it for Time Machine and external storage.
This is a common mistake and I highly advise against it.
1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.
3: The storage drive might become a portable need, with it being on the TM drive, now your increasing the risk to the TM backup that something could happen to it along with the storage drive, due to increased movement.

  • HT201250 Using Time Machine as an external hard drive

I backed up my iMac with an external hard drive using Time Machine; can I delete all the data from my iMac now? My real goal is to use the 1TB external hard drive I just got to store all my music, photos, and other files on. I want to clear all the space off of my iMac, and may by a new Macbook. I want to be able to access all the files from my original computer on either, while cleaning out the iMac. Was it pointless for me to use Time Machine? Thanks so much for the feedback!

You cannot use the files in the Time Machine backup and while it is possible to partition or otherwise use free space on the Time Machine drive as external storage Apple does not recommmend it. Your best solutions are either replace the existing hard drive in your MacBook Pro with a larger capacity drive or add a bus powered external HD. A 1TB USB 2 or 3 drive runs just a bit over $100 and the internal drive about $20 less. In either case remember the Time Machine drive should have two to three times the space of the drive(s) it is backing up.

To add to Niel's comment bear in mind that if you have a backup copy on an external HD and later delete the orignals on your Mac HD you will then only have one copy - so no backup.
If the pictures are precious you should have at least two copies, and ideally another copy kept off site,
