HT201250 once time machine starts running, it never stops. what could cause this?

Using WD, My Passport for Mac, 2TB with Time-Machine. Updated software on MacBook, now once time machine starts running an update it does not stop untill  cancel it!

1. The first time takes very long always, after that it will only do changes very hour and you will not notice it. The drive must be correctly formatted, Guid Partition Table, Mac Os Extended (journaled).
2. If you installed any of the 'smart' software that came with the disk (specifically with the WD disk), you have to uninstall it completely immediately, because it will cause data loss and speed at the minimum: in macs you do not not need such additional software, just make sure that the disk is correctly formatted. If you had such software installed, and now uninstalled, you better reformat the drive, restart the mac, and then start all over again with TM.

Since installing Snow Leopard and then Lion on my Intel-based iMac two weeks ago, my iTunes program seems to open at will whenever the computer is on.   It often begins playing music, as well.  What is causing this and how do I make it stop?

There are ways to minimize, mitigate, and help avoid a lot of problems.
    Bootable backups.
Zeroing a drive twice before using, and format it with SL DVD Apple Disk Utility for sure.
Even a clean install should import old apps without having to reauthorize.
If you must do an upgrade, do it from the SL DVD, after repairing the drive and be sure to use the SL version of Alsoft Disk Warrior (4.2).
Wait six months before jumping on a new OS.
10% is still too many. Yes, it is more sensitive to RAM and hard drive errors, doesn't like some controllers; most ext hdd cases; and enough software to make for test-only status. And it only IDs some known incompatible applications, drivers, extensions, etc and does not remove even those always in best manner.
Plus, there are problems with the new Rosetta and the cache files it now uses. So some apps and plug-ins will cause more trouble. Not all are ready. Good reason to hold off for the months it takes.
Other devices act different as far as on/off behavior.
(Migrating from G5s to Mac Pro can cause all kinds of problems, weird behavior, sluggish system, and why anyone that went down that road was strongly recommended to NOT use Migration Assistant for any of their applications, and to ONLY do clean/fresh installs of any apps. If you skipped that day, didn't read the Guide to M.A., or didn't want to do fresh installs then, your system could have been on borrowed time. If you did do clean install of applications, great.
Installing SL can result in a corrupt directory - I think and it "seems" to be happening, but no real proof, just gut feeling and instinct (underlying file system problem? weak sectors that pre-existed waiting to happen?).
Remember all the "there just aren't a lot of 64-bit drivers" for Vista and XP? it's come home to roost.
... my guess is not enough incense and offerings. To hop into TimeMachine and SuperDuper backup images and pull the 1TB for another day (week, month, year).

What could cause the lock in my preferences to seemingly to click open on there own,I use my home wifi network which is private and have never given out that password either for my network or preferences password.....help,Thank you

    You're welcome.
Voicemail is left at your carrier's server. That will continue to work unless you report your iPhone as lost or stolen with your carrier.
You may never find it again and you can't if the iPhone remains offline or out of service which means the iPhone is powered off or doesn't have cellular reception.

  • Time Machine calculating changes and never stops

I have a 27" iMac and I have an intermittent problem with Time Machine.
It will work great and then it will get hung on calculating changes and the only thing I can do is turn off the external drive to make it stop
I have fixed the permissions on the c:\ drive and run repair disk on the external drive
I am a Mac newbie so I don't know what else to do.  Any ideas on how to proceed to solve this problem?
    TIA

Error writing to backup log.  NSFileHandleOperationException:***
-[NSConcreteFileHandle writeData:]: No space left on device
Check with airport utility.. is there any space left on the TC. if not it cannot work.
You will need to delete something or erase the drive after an archive..
The former TM should do itself.. but it is better IMHO to take action yourself.. not to delete files but to archive and start again. Still that is my opinion only.
Are you plugged in by ethernet? If not it will either take forever or not work.

  • Replaced HD in my imac, had external backup drive that had everything i needed, but i only transfered a few of the files before Time Machine started a back up before i could transfer all files over, now i no longer see the old files on my external drive

My external drive looks like i still have all the info(taking up a large ammount of data on drive) but i cannot see it.

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • I just started to Firfox 3.6 to watch Netflix movies and watch one and the next day went to watch another one and no sound what could cause this?

I have a new windows 7 computer and started to have problems with Explorer 64 bit with silverlight and could not keep it working so I went Firefox, however after watching one movie with it the second one I had no sound. Could my problem with silverlight effect the sound on Firefox? I can not get any sound out of it.

We actually have two time server PC's (half the banks on each). Of the two error modules, one is on each PC. There have been no changes to the PC other than anti-virus updates passed down from IT. AS far as network routing, to the best of my knowledge it hasn't changed. The IP's, gateway, DNS are all the same settings. It's always possible for IT to change out a switch or server somewhere in the infrastructure. I asked and they had not done so since the time this problem started occurring.
If we reboot the timserver PC, the FP2015 still maintains the 2028 (at least for the several hours we let it run after the reboot). The only way we can find to get rid of the 2028 date is a reboot of the 2015 module. Within 24 hours, the problem returns.
I didn't know there was an upgrade for just the time server software. I can check into that. Thanks. However, I'm not sure how much that will help. After all, 22 modules are working perfectly with only two experiencing problems. I'm tending to lean towards the belief that there is just something wrong with the modules themselves, even though I'm not sure what that would be.
Tonight I think I will try letting one module run with the net disconnected. Both modules have errored again today and I need to go fix them. After doing so, I think I will pull the plug on one for 24 hours to see if it has a 2028 date on it when it is reconnected. This might give me more insight into whether the problem is on the PC side (the time server or interface app running there), on the real time app (running on the FP2015), or perhaps some kind of fault with the hardware.

  • My MacBook Pro has started to shutdown by itself recently, what could cause this?

I need some help, please.  My MacBook Pro {running on 10.7.5} has started to become sluggish recently, and just yesterday it shutdown itself twice.  I have noticed that when am surfing the web, openning another application or especially using Yahoo Mail, the cursor turns into the color wheel and just spins for a while.  I ran Sophos Anti-Virus and nothing was found.  I did have a problem with memory a while ago, but then I just moved things over to the external HD, and everything ran smoothly again.  My first thought is that it is a problem with the memory again, but the self-shutdown got me worried. Any thoughts?  Thanks

Nor will it, so abandon that line of thinking.
After it restarted, did you see a dialog box resembling this one:
If so, next time it occurs click Report...
Before you send it to Apple, copy the text of the report. Paste it in a reply.
Remove or obscure any personal information, should it appear.

Then, if there's any data on the drive that you want to keep, you have to back up before you do anything else -- assuming it's still possible.
    Basically you have three options:
    1. Install a copy of the Mac OS on an external hard drive, boot from it, and copy the data from the internal drive.
    2. Start the problem Mac in FireWire target mode (command-T at startup) and connect it to a working Mac with a FireWire cable. The internal drive will mount as a FireWire device.
    3. Remove the internal drive and mount in an external enclosure on another Mac.
Once you've backed up, follow the sequence in the support article linked below. The article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running Lion) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

  • External WD Passport won't recognize after Time Machine start.

I bought a WD passport 500 gb drive and when I initially plugged it in time machine saw it and when I asked it to use it- something happened and now NO icon appears in order to be selected nor does an icon show anywhere to even select. I changed the drive and the new one does the same. Cycles continously and never mounts. Did the usual- changed ports and changed wires. It just isn't recognized no matter what. What to do?

No. The drive is not reflected in any window. Not on my computer or disk utility. It initially was shown just before Time Machine started. It was then I escaped from time machine and I eventually returned the first drive after reformating it to fat 32 (on a windows machine) and it still wouldn't show up the MAC. The second drive now does the same as the first (doesn't show and cycles) but never showed up in any form on the MAC.
If the MAC has a register then my guess is some information about any external disk has been altered and I should need to to return it to it's original setting. That is because the second drive is doing the same as the first. I just don't know how to do that or even look.
If it uses the MBR (Master Boot Record) partition scheme, for Windoze, TM may have started to reformat it to GUID, but had that interrupted when you cancelled. If DU can't see it at all, there's not much you can do from your Mac. You may need to reformat it on a PC, then do it over on your Mac, via item #5 in the FAQ.
There are reports of problems with some WD drives having not working well on Macs. You might want to check their website support/forums, etc.

  • How Can I Speed Up My MacBook When Time Machine is running on Time Capsule

My Macbook starts to run really slow and I consistenly get the color wheel when trying to do other tasks when Time Machine is running in the background.  I am connected to Time Machine on a Time Capsule. Given this runs every hour its really annoying.

    Plus to pondini..
If possible you can use ethernet.. that speeds things up greatly.
If you are close to the TC make sure it is connecting via the 5ghz wireless.. Check the actual wireless link speed. And transfer rates.. if rates are too slow.. then look at relocating the wireless or putting in some sort of wireless extender.
I guess the other question is what is slow.. the disk on the computer, internet, just overall feel of the computer.. perhaps give a specific.. what is slow.

  • Since upgrade, Time Machine starts and stalls.  Waited 24 hours. Formatted disk-no change.

Since upgrade to Mavericks on Mini, Time Machine starts and stalls.  Says "292 Mb of 147.68 Gb", wheel spins. Waited 24 hours, no change. Formatted disk-no change.  Tried every solution found in threads; no fix.  Doing manual backups. Help!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • Airtunes hangs when time machine starts

    Hi,
I have got one time capsule with one airport express. On snow leopard (10.6.2), I've configured time machine on time capsule. As soon as time machine starts (every 1 hour), airtunes hangs. I guess this is due to some QoS misconfiguration. But I haven't found anything about it. Does anyone has got any idea/fix to limit those hangs ?
    Regards
    Marc

I'm having a very similar problem and it is detrimental.
Here is the scenario: I have a 1TB Time Capsule as my primary router. I am able to perform backups on all but one of my machines. My iMac backs up via 1GB ethernet to the TC, my MacBookAir (60GB,SS) backs up via wireless N (270mb) and my other MacBookAir (80GB,IDE) also backs up via wireless N without any problems.
I used to use a 500mb external drive to backup my iMac but outgrew it, so I started backing up to the TC instead. No problems at all.
I also used to back up my Intel MacMini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.5 to a similar external hard-drive but haven't in a while.
I decided it finally made sense to backup ALL my Mac's to the same 1TB TimeCapsule but it's just not working out!
On the MacMini; I turn on TimeMachine, the TimeCapsule has been chosen as a backup location, it prepares backup for a moment, mounts the backup drive and then appears to begin backup up... No...! First I get a message the the TimeCapsule closed the connection, next I lose Internet connection across my entire network both wired and wireless and then the TimeCapsule light turns amber, flashes and essentially does a completel crash / reset and then comes back to life a few moments later. I can backup any other computer except the MacMini to the TimeCapsule without "crashing" it and it makes no sense! Every computer is completely up to date with all the latest patches and the TimeCapsule is running 7.3.2
I sure hope this gets resolved, seems like other people are pretty disgusted with the performance of the TimeCapsule with problems that have no resolution.

  • HT201250 My time machine only sometimes recognises my external hard drive, and when it does, it freezes and does not transfer any data. What is going on?

I changed hard-drive. Time machine started hopefully and mid-way through the whole thing froze. Since then, back to the same problem

I bought a new one yesterday to check - it went to 15GB, then suddenly all collapsed again. Would that be sheer coincidence that two hard-drives blow up when trying to use time machine?
