HT201250 time capsule problem with comcast

I have tried to Power down and back my Comcast cable modem and my Time Capsule and still can't connect to  my T.C. wirelessly anymore.
I swiched from AT&T 2wire -----> Time Capsule
To:     Comcast's   SB6141 -----> Time Capsule
Thanks

Here is the power sequence for cable modems and routers.
Router - Time CapsulePower off.
SB6141 - Cable modem
Power off.
Wait 30 seconds
Power on and wait for all lights except the bottom one which would be your T.C.
Router - Time CapsulePower on
There is nothing to configure on your SB6141 cable modem. You might try a different Ethernet port in the rare possibility that the current port has gone bad. These are rock solid cable modems. Have the single-port SB6121.
You will need to run Air Port Utility. My Internet connection screen is set to Share a public IP address. And on the Internet tab, Configure IPv4 Using DHCP. Let the cable modem populate all the addresses on this screen and the DNS servers. Set up your LAN within the DHCP tab. I used 1 day for the lease. In Advanced -> IPv6, it is set to Link-Local only.
I gave my Airport Extreme a Name and intense password. Setting time automatically. Did not allow setup over WAN. Wireless Mode is Create a wireless network. Radio channel selection is automatic, and WPA2 security is up. I am running two wireless networks: 2.4Ghz 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n, and a 5Ghz with wide channels.
Don't forget to update the Time Capsule.
In System Preferences >Network, you may want to remove the wireless service and recreate it. On the Wireless > Advanced Screen, you will want to add the Time Capsule SSID to Preferred Networks, and select Remember networks this computer has joined. Then Apply.
If all of this hasn't helped, ask Comcast to ping your cable modem and see if there are any network issues between you and their head end. Occasionally, Comcast gets DNS amnesia and nothing works until they restore it.
Hope this helps.

  • HT201250 Time Capsule Problems - Flashing Amber

Hi, I just purchased Time Capsule to use as a storage device for Time Machine. This was my first attempt to use Time Machine. I tried connecting via AirPort, but ultimately couldnt get the restart to work...so i just went with the ethernet cable. I believe its working (i can see the back-up'd files in Finder), but the light continues to flash amber. Problem? How do i fix it?

  • Time Capsule - problems with file sharing

Time Capsule is working great with Time Machine, but I can't copy files to it even after enabling file sharing in AirPort Utility. I'd really like to move my iTunes library to it since the external drive it currently lives on is full and the TC has about 1.96TB still free. Any thoughts on what the problem is? I see it under "shared" in Finder, but all I can see is the "data" folder and I get warnings that the drive is read only. Thanks for any help you all might be able to provide!

Not Bob .. but it is fairly simple.
When we say external drive we mean a drive plugged physically directly into the Mac.
It can then be backed up by TM.
Just open the TM preference and click on the options.. it should automagically include all disks connected to local machine. You can exclude a drive though. Make sure nothing is excluded .. if it is uncheck it.
TM cannot backup a Network drive but can use a drive as long as it is correctly formatted and accessible to Mac OS as a target for the backup.
I would also recommend you do a straight backup of your disk. 500GB drive is cheap. Get a USB holder and do that direct file copy or use a software like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. The later can make a direct copy of the disk in the freeware version. IMHO it is a lot easier to recover.. the increments if you already have the bulk.

  • Time capsule - problems with directory

I have got time capsule running about two weeks ago and everything worked well Tuesday evening it came up with a message saying it could not access the directory on my Macbook pro - still doing it so switched it off - any suggestions?

Here's something weird. Another annoying issue I've had with TC is that it slows down the network over time. I'm on Uverse at 10/1.5 and after a week or so it's down to about 2.5 to 3 down. A reboot of my Mac and TC and the problem goes away. So while I'm musing about the problem with the directory, I notice I'm starting to slow again. I reboot, and guess what? My directory is back all the way to April when I set it up.
I'm beginning to suspect that TC/TM doesn't play well with a couple of other applications. One of the companies I'm working with uses a P2P system to send around some monster video files and I'm using something called Azureus (which is also hook up with an application called Vuez that seems to be a YouTube sort of thing). I run Azureus overnight as do most of the development guys I'm working with so we can send around some big video files and have them ready for review and discussion in the morning. I didn't have anything coming in or going out last night and didn't launch the program after the reboot and everyhing is fine so far. It's my first suspect. If not that, then something else maybe is fighting TM for resources? Anyway, I'll keep an eye on this and post if something becomes obvious.

    Can anyone help?

Excellent. I did contact my ISP and cross-referenced their list with the bestselling cable modems on Amazon.com. Looks like the Motorola SB5120 Surfboard modem works great. It also has an ethernet port and cable so I guess that'll connect easily to Time Capsule since you said I only need an ethernet cable.
I guess I might have to make sure the initial setup goes good, in which case I might be back here to make sure I did that right.
Thanks for the help though. At least I'll know that I'll have the right hardware that works with everything I have.

  • Apple tv & time capsule problem with ethernet

hi there. my apple tv and time capsule are working just fine on wifi. i want to stream movies stored on the TC faster via ethernet. i plug in the ethernet cable which works fine on other hardware and i cant access the movies. connected via DHCP and also tried a manual IP - still no joy.
    HELP.....

I'm not exactly sure what an orange live box is, assume it's a router, is this the router that you mention or another box. What is apparent is that you have at least 2 routers and maybe three (no big issue - I have 6), what is important is that only one of them is issuing IP's.
You can do this either by DHCP or manually (I choose DHCP) from the first device in the chain, ie the one that your telephone cable plugs into, all other routers should be set up in bridging mode (or maybe WDS, but I doubt it from what you have told me)
Can you confirm this is your set up.

  • Getting invalid IP address with Time Capsule in new Comcast setup

Today I just got hooked up to Comcast. I was using Qwest. I have a Arris TM722 cable modem that is going to a switch. One of the connections in the switch comes to my office. From the port in the office I have a Ethernet cable going to my first generation Time Capsule. With a cable from the TC to my laptop I can get online and the light on the TC is green. My IP address on my laptop is 1xx.xx.xxx.xxx. This is the same numbers if I hook up the laptop directly from the cable modem.
In the Internet tab in Airport Utility I have Connection Sharing set to "Off (Bridge Mode). DHCP is set to manually. If I had DHCP enabled I am not able to get online using a Ethernet cable.
I have Lion 10.7.2 on the laptop and the firmware is 7.6 on the TC.
When I connect to my wireless network that is set in the TC I receive an invalid IP address 169.xxx.xx.xxx.
I have reset the cable modem and TC twice and still cannot get a vaild IP address when I connect wirelessly.
Any suggestions on how I can get this to work would be highly appreciated. I had no problems wirelessly when I used Qwest DSL service.

When you had Qwest, you likely had a gateway device, which is a combination modem/router in the same package. If my guess is wrong here....you need to pretty much ignore everything else below.
Bridge Mode would have been the correct setting for the Time Capsule in this type of configuration since the Qwest device was handling DHCP assignments for all devices on the network.  The Time Capsule was simply passing through that information to connected devices.
It appears as if you now have a simple cable modem.....which can deliver only 1 IP address. Then you have the cable modem connected to a switch. You cannot insert a switch between a simple modem and a router (Time Capsule). (You can if you have a gateway device).
The switch must come after the Time Capsule, not before the Time Capsule in this type of setup.
The Time Capsule is getting the IP address from the cable modem via Ethernet and passing it through in Bridge Mode when you connect a computer using Ethernet.
In order to connect the computer using wireless, you would need another IP address. But.... the cable modem is already delivering the only IP address that it can provide, and that is the Ethernet connection for a device.
My suggestion would be to completely reset both the modem and Time Capsule again and then connect the modem directly to the Time Capsule.....not to the switch.
The Time Capsule should be configured to "Create a wireless network". When it does this, it will also choose the Connection Sharing setting of "Share a public IP address" because it is now the main router that must supply the DHCP info and IP addresses to the network.
The Time Capsule is going to supply IP addresses that look something like 10.0.1.2 etc. to connected devices on the network.

  • Time Capsule & Airport with a new modem WiFi

I have a MacBook Pro and a Time Capsule with Airport.  I have a new modem from my Comcast Internet provider that has WiFi Built into it.  If I use the modem for my WiFi, will my Time Capsule connect with my MacBook through the modem Wifi?  And how can I know which Wifi will be the stronger?

Plug the TC into the new modem with a decent length ethernet cord.. a few meters..
Then simply setup roaming network.. so both the TC and the new modem will reinforce each other.. the setup is easy.. Bob at least says it is.. automagically from the new v6 utility.. but it is not hard to do manually either IMHO.
    The basic rule is simple.
    TC in bridge.
TC creates a wireless network. Same SSID.. ie wireless name Same security .. ie WPA2 AES = WPA2 Personal.. same password.
Voila there it is. although using different channels can be helpful.. if you run into problem.
Now you don't have to worry about which is stronger.. the MB will connect to whichever is stronger.. without human intervention.
    Ask Bob to elaborate..

BTW the roaming network document is a help.

The fact that you have one apple and one non-apple router here makes no difference except in terminology.

  • Time Capsule Hangs with USB Drive Connected after installing 10.5.6 update

The 10.5.6 update basically made my External USB Disk connected to the Time Capsule unusable. I've repaired the permissions as suggested in other posts - this did not fix the problem.
I was unable to perform any incremental backups initially after the 10.5.6 update, so I archived my sparsebundle and created a new one by doing a full fresh backup - which completed successfully. However, after the backup, I was unable to connect to the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to the Time Capsule via Finder - when trying to connect, my computer hangs and I'm forced to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND the Time Capsule, if I just restart one or the other the problem persists. If I let the connection attempt run long enough I get an "Error Code: -8072" message and still have to do a hard restart. After the hard restart of my computer and Time Capsule I'm able to connect to the Time Capsule and the USB drive connected to Time Capsule just fine. However, once the Time Machine backup runs again - the same problem returns, I can no longer access the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to Time Capsule via Finder and have to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND Time Capsule. This 10.5.6 update has been havoc, anyone have the same troubles or ideas for resolving this? Before updating to 10.5.6 my system was working flawlessly with Time Capsule and the connected USB drive.
UPDATE: I've just verified that this problem only occurs with my external LaCie Hard Drive connected to Time Capsule via USB. If I disconnect my LaCie Hard Drive from the Time Capsule and restart the Time Capsule everything works fine (backups, access to Time Capsule Disk from Finder). If I connect the LaCie Hard Drive via USB to the Time Capsule, I am able to access the LaCie Hard Drive in Finder UNTIL the next Time Machine backup. After the first Time Machine backup with the USB drive connected, I can no longer access the USB drive from Finder - Finder hangs and eventually produces "Error Code: -8072". If I disconnect the USB drive, then plug it back in - Finder no longer hangs and I can access the drive connected to Time Capsule until the next backup occurs.
Anybody have ANY ideas? This worked fine before the 10.5.6 update!

I am having a similar problem. Never tried it before installing 10.5.6, but have a Time Capsule (500GB) with a 1TB WD MyBook Essential Edition connected via USB. Hardware is password protected by authorized users of network and needs separate login to access. When I initially set it up, it worked fine (though too difficult to set up). The WD storage drive showed up in Finder window as a subset of the Time Capsule after clicking on the Time Capsule icon. I had an "-8072" error message yesterday that I ignored, but then the file contents of the WD storage drive took forever to be viewed in Finder (though video files could be accessed wirelessly). Today started having a problem... coincidentally?... after a Time Machine backup, and got the message: "The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -8072)." Now I am unable to get into the WD drive when I click on "Connect As" on the Time Capsule icon in the Finder menu... I just get the -8072 error. I no longer even see the Time Capsule disk as a subset of the Time Capsule icon in the Finder Toolbar.
    What is going on???

  • Time Capsule shows with wrong name on Time Machine

I changed the name of my Time Capsule using airport. However, Time Machine still shows the old Time Capsule name, with the new name underneath. When I try to back up using this disk, it shows the following error message:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Old Time Capsule name/My laptop name.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)."
I don't know how to fix this. I have looked everywhere. I deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist file in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, and even made sure to do a secure empty trash. I even did a soft reset of the Time Capsule to the factory configuration, and renamed the Time Capsule all over again. I restarted the computer several times during this process, and yet no luck, it still shows the old Time Capsule name.
Does anybody know how to fix this? Thank you!

Ok, the MacBook is backing up now. Here is what I did:
After manually changing the name of the Time Capsule Disk as above, Time Machine was still not able to back up. I kept getting the error message
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Old Time Capsule name/My laptop name.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)."
The problem is that "My laptop name" Time Machine was using is wrong. I had changed the laptop name in Network Perferences>Sharing before, but it still kept looking for the wrong .sparsebundle file in the Time Capsule. I don't know why, and I even deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist file again with no success.
I entered the Time Capsule from the Finder menu, found the .sparsebundle file with the wrong name, and manually deleted it. Finally the MacBook was able to backup. However, although the MacBook name is the same as it used to be before, and even though there was already an old .sparsebundle file with the correct name, Time Machine created a new .sparesebundle with the same name, and began an entirely new backup. I am just letting it do this backup, and then I will manually delete the old backup, so it doesn't take space on the Time Capsule. I don't need the past backups (and hope I won't swallow my words), and I am tired of dealing with this, so this will be it.

  • Problems with Comcast

Has anyone encountered problems with Comcast when sharing Internet on OS X 10.8? The Comcast's technicians stated that they are having problems with OS X Mountain Lion, and they are charging me $80 to send a technician to resolve the problem. Mac X 10.7 from my MacBook worked well for this function, using Comcast's Internet connection.
Given Comcast's massive coverage area, this is a huge issue that needs the attention of Apple senior management.

    Guys,
Bob is not the only one. We have the exact same problem here. MAJOR slowdown in speed with Comcast and we're not over ethernet we're over wireless.
Comcast came out and dug their heels in trying to find the problem 3 times. I then asked them to bring a windows laptop (of course on the day I brought mine from work too) and they hooked it up with their own router, and we put a mac and the laptop on the router. Mac's test speed was 1.8-2.3Mb/s windows laptop was 7-9Mb/s. This is just CRAZY.
So I went upstairs fired up my Intel iMac and the work Laptop and did the same test over wireless. SAME results.
This is NOT a network issue with comcast (for once), and this is not a router issue or a modem reset issue.
There is something on our macs that is causing this. We have 4 Macs in this house and they ALL exhibit the same problems.
I even went as far as changing the connection on the Airport Extreme's wan connection to 10-baseT Half Duplex and we get the same results.
We're at a loss and this sure ***** big time.
I even installed the optimizer packages available around the web, same results. I ran rman, nothing new to report.
    10.4.6 blows.

  • Time capsule slow with macbook pro

    Hello,
    I'm using a  Time Capsule 2T with a MacBook pro 2.0Ghz Intel Core i7, 8GB ram, OSX 10.9.2.
I have a 10mbps internet plan and it works perfectly with my iphone or ipad mini using the wireless signal.
But with my macbook pro, the speed goes down to 1mbps, at maximum...
I've reseted my modem, the Time Capsule, macbook and nothing changed...
Does anyone know what could be happening?? Tks!!!

Have you tested with ethernet? From the specs of your machine it should still have ethernet port.
That is the first test.. with wireless off.. as it helps to establish if the issue is just wireless or is some network problem. If it is still slow post back without doing anything else.
Next test.. copy a file to the TC.. use a big file, a system update or some such.. copy it from the computer to the TC.. and TC to the computer. What speed do you get??
That establishes if the problem is wireless overall or is it wrongly setup somehow.
Test with wireless should be about 3-5M from the TC.. no need to be right next to it.
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local in wireless setting on the computer.
Do the wireless diagnostics, which is built into the OS. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5606
Follow all the wifi best practice.
No luck post back your test results.

  • Will the wifi function of time capsule interfere with my existing router?

Will the wifi function of time capsule interfere with my existing home network via my Cisco router?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The routers will only interfere if they are working with the same channel. Time Capsule sets up automatically the channel, so you shouldn't have any problem with both routers

  • Will an older "Time Capsule" work with Mountain Lion?

will an older "Time Capsule" work with Mountain Lion?

It should do. Depends on how you define an 'older' TC. As long as your SW is up to date and the TC has relatively recent Firmware etc then there shouldn't be an issue.
Are you having a problem with yours or just curious before you upgrade the OS?

  • Weird: why would a network drive named "time-capsule-de" with an icon of an old-fashioned PC monitor appear on my home network?

Weird: why would a network drive with the name "time-capsule-de" and an icon of an old-fashioned PC monitor suddenly appear on my home network?
It happened shortly after I'd set up a new Time Capsule with our iMac and had transferred the configuration for it over from my old Time Capsule.
I'd just taken the old Time Capsule into another room and powered it up with my MacBook  to confirm that Airport Utility's wiping of its settings hadn't affected the old Time Machine backups still stored in it.
I was in the process of tinkering to see how I could use the old Time Capsule, when Airport Utility offered to "extend" my home network, so I tried that setting, and then got a warning that the old Time Capsule and its wifi networks were not yet secure or private.  While I was working to fix that, I noticed that in the Finder sidebar and in my Network settings, this mysterious "time-capsule-de" (with an odd old-fashioned PC monitor for an icon) had appeared.  I tried to click on it, but could not access it.  I also could not eject it.  I shut down my old Time Capsule and my MacBook.  When I turned the laptop back on, "time-capsule-de" was gone.
What do you all make of that?  Should I worry about the security of my home network?  I live in an apartment development, so there are more than a dozen stray wifi signals pouring in from other units.
I'd welcome any thoughts or suggestions.  Thanks!

What is the name of your old Time Capsule? Did you change the name to the new one?
It appears in Finder .. that is to be expected.. it is after all a network drive.. and it has PC symbol more than likely because you are using Mavericks which defaults to SMB network.. ie the computer thinks it is a windows computer.
There is nothing bad or sinister going on.. but you certainly need to ensure your own wireless network is secure..
    That is otherwise all fine.
If the TC shows up again, check that it is also in the airport utility and check its MAC address with the label on the bottom.. It will show in the Utility .. then you can compare and check you are reading the right thing.
