I have an external drive I have used with time machine. I now have purchased a time capsule. Can I move the backups from the external drive to the new time capsule?

Use Time Machine to simply backup the attached drive so then you'll have the backup of the backup drive. It will end up using all that space on the Time Capsule so I hope you'll have enough left over for your regular backups.

Powerbook G4 OSX 10.5.8 Time Capsule Questions

I just purchased a a TC, and am excited to use it. I have a few questions:
I only have 16gb of my 120gb? hard drive left to use. Will the Time Capsule "mirror" my hard drive or can I "move" some of my large files (iTunes and iPhoto) over to the TC to free up space on my G4's hard drive?
I also have an Apple TV. Will this be a problem being connected too?
I am a little confused as to how to do this. My G4 is getting pretty sluggish, and I want to clean it up some. What program can use to help get rid of the old programs I have that are not using and trash them? Do I just drag them to the trash?
Thanks to anyone who can help me out. I'm saving up for a new MBP, but don't want to lose my very important iTunes and iPhoto stuff in the meantime!

If you use Time Capsule with Time Machine, almost all of your computer's disk drive contents (except what you exclude) will be backed up to the Time Capsule disk. If you don't use Time Machine, you can put whatever you want to on the Time Capsule disk.
You can also attach an external USB drive to your Time Capsule and move anything you want to that.

For the most part, dragging programs to the trash will eliminate all but "preference" files. To locate those, look in <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences.

Time Capsule question from a Mac Newbie

I have a weird question. I plan on buying a new laptop for my switch to OSX. I was planning on getting a time capsule so I can use time machine, get N wireless and use it as a network storage device (store video files so it's accessible between my desktop pc and laptop).
2 questions:
1) I saw PC's and non-leopard users can use the TC as a external HDD, just wanted to confirm leopard users can do the same. I assumed it would be possible, but assumptions are the mother of all you know what.
2) I saw some people stating they are using a TC and a external HDD connected to it. The only reasons I could come up with is the TC does not provide enough space or my assumption of being able to use the TC as a time machine backup device and networked external hdd is incorrect. Just wanted to ask if there are any other benefits / reasons one may choose a setup like that?

Leopard can absolutely use the TC HDD.

Firstly, TC isn't readily partitionable, which is a major drawback. If you are planning on using TC as the TM destination, you shouldn't stick your PC stuff on it, in case you ever need to erase the HDD. However, you could simply plug a USB HDD into the USB port and Viola! you have another NAS! Also, there is an Archive feature on TC that allows the entire TC HDD to be quickly backed up for Archive purposes.

Time Capsule: Questions Re: PC/Mac, ITunes, General Backup

Hi, very new (renew really) back to the Mac community. Just bought a MBP and a TC. I've added them both to a PC home, which is to say I have a PC desktop and laptop, both running off a wireless home network (FIOS if that matters). I've just now set up the MBP and the TC successfully, in the sense that they are both running, connected to the home network (TC by wired by ethernet to wireless router, MBP by wireless to same), and I've done one back up. Great, that works.
Now, here's what I want and need guidance on:
1)   my non-mac laptop has tons of digital photos on it that I want on the TC as both back up and creating space and also so I can then access from any other computer connected to the wireless home network. this will be similar to next question, but ideally I want more than a backup, i want the TC to serve as an external network hard drive for both space and convenience purposes.   Is there some trick to this? I haven't tried, but I note that while my PC sees the drive on the network, it also views it as inaccessible. I haven't d/l'ed the airbook to the PC yet.
2) I've seen this ITunes question asked other places but not sure I understand the answers and what to do exactly. So I now have a desktop PC where most of our Itunes library resides. I also have three Ipods, two Ipads, and now a MacbookPro. Is there a good and effective way to get the music onto the the Time Capsule in one place that all can benefit from and use, at least as a library from which to draw?   We use most of the devices in the home for music but not always, and want our music when we travel.   what is the best way to do this ??

Those are two very different things. You do not want your only copy of anything important on the TC; when (not if) something awful happens to it . . .

You can do that, but it's a bit tricky, since you cannot partition it. See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.
It's a bit cumbersome, and I'm not entirely certain it will work for everything you want (I don't do Windoze); your best bet might be to connect a USB drive to the TC for the media files.
Since Time Machine cannot back up from any network location, you'll need another app to back the USB drive up to the TC. The Chronosync app might be good for that; you might want to create a disk image on the TC (per #Q3) for those backups.
You'll need yet another app to back up the PC, if that's what you want to do (I read about one called WinClone that might work). Depending on what you can find, and space available, you could put those backups on the TC or a partition on the USB drive.
If necessary, you can connect multiple USB drives (and/or a printer) to the TC, via a powered USB hub.
Many possibilities . . . food for thought.

Time Capsule Questions

I am considering getting a Time Capsule to do both Time Machine back-ups and to use as a NAS drive for multiple computers. Before I buy, I have a few questions that I've been seeing different answers on, so I figured I'd ask them all here in one thread and see what you experts have to say.
1) Am I able to back-up data from a Mac and a PC on the same Time Capsule at the same time? (Mac via Time Machine, PC via some PC back-up program)
2) Am I able to use that same Time Capsule as a NAS for storing/accessing files from both the Mac and the PC?
3) Will the above things work if the PC is running the Windows 7 OS? I've been reading weird things about that.
4) If I expand the Time Capsule with a USB connected hard drive does it expand Time Machine storage area or just add additional NAS storage? Will any brand USB hard drives work? Is a USB powered hub necessary as a go-between or can I hust use a self-powered USB drive?
5) My current cable modem set up has a coaxial cable running into a Netgear wireless router. The Time Capsule will be a better wireless router, so I'd like to get rid of the Netgear box, but the Time Capsule doesn't have a coaxial cable in like the Netgear does. How do I connect the two without the Netgear wireless router that I don't need anymore?

Yes, you can!!
But you can do that on any NAS with time machine extensions not just a TC.
At the same time btw means it will run at half the speed.
Will it always be running at half-speed or just when each computer happens to be backing up things?

Yes, and Yes.. although win7 might take a certain amount of setting up it does work.
Having said that.. TC is not a NAS. It is a sealed device unserviceable by Apple.. no fix available for dead power supplies or dead drives.. plus no backup internally .. it is a backup destination for files on the computer not a NAS. Using it as such will one day cause you a moment of extreme heart puplitations as your 2TB or 3TB of data is rendered useless. (mostly by Apple's desire to look nice and have zero cooling).
What exactly is a NAS then? Perhaps I'm using the word wrong. I just want a wireless hard drive for accessing/storing files.

It will add storage as a separate drive. And will go as fast as Treacle in Jan.. (definitely a northern hemisphere phrase as it is hot as **** in jan in Australia).
Speed on USB over network is half that direct to your computer which is still slow.

You still need the netgear.. it is the modem.. you need to plug the TC into the netgear which you can hopefully bridge.. otherwise ring your cable company and ask for a replacement pure modem.

Appletv & Time capsule question and some others.

My ATV is pretty much full now and so today I have taken delivery of a Time Capsule (1TB).
Question 1: Lets assume the TC is half full this time next year. This makes it much bigger than the laptop itunes is on. How do I make it leave stuff on the ATV/TC but not synch it over to itunes?
Question 2: My itunes crashes everytime it tries to synch with ATV. Another thread on here suggests that if you have a large amount of data that needs synching (in my case about 15 new tv episodes and a film, so a fair bit) then it works better if hardwired. Must I disable the wireless if I'm hardwiring it? If so, how? As it is currently, each time I connect up the laptop to the ATV with the ethernet cable it makes it all go incredibly wrong.

iTunes crashing could indicate a problem with itunes, your network or your OS.
Your wifi settings are disabled on the Apple tv when an ethernet connector is plugged into it.
If you are connecting an ethernet cable directly between your PC and the Apple tv, you should be using a cross-over cable.

Time Capsule question from a Mac virgin

Hi
I am something of a luddite when it comes to computers but have just purchased a Time Capsule as an easy way to ensure that I am constantly backed up. I currently access the internet via the "wireless box" (which I now know to be both a modem and a router) provided by o2 when I signed up to their broadband. I would REALLY appreciate some advice.
From a quick scan of these boards it seems that I have a couple of choices:
1. Use the o2 wireless box as a modem only and connect the Time Capsule to it via an ethernet cable to act as the router.
2. Ditch the o2 wireless box entirely and purchase a specialist modem to use with the Time Capsule.
Is one approach likely to be better than the other? In both cases do I need to physically connect (via an ethernet cable) the modem to the Time Capsule? Or is it possible to keep the two separate (e.g. if I keep the wireless "switched on" and the Time Capsule connects "remotely"?
(I suspect that last question is possibly a stupid one...)
Anyway, any help or advice would be very gratefully received. Thanks in anticipation.

Hello JayH_Mac. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You actually have a third option and that would be to connect the new Time Capsule (TC) by Ethernet to the o2 gateway device. You would just need to reconfigure the TC as a bridge to allow the gateway to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients connected to either router.
You would reconfigure the TC as a bridge by using the AirPort Utility: AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
This third approach would be the simplest to configure. It would also provide you with the option to disable the wireless function of the gateway or leave both to provide wireless in a "roaming" network configuration.

Time Capsule Questions....Joining Existing Network

Firstly, the below questions are based on my assumption that the Time Capsule's firmware & hardware is similar to the Airport Express (but with the addition of the HDD!)
The router my network's running off is a Linksys WRT600N (has both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz and 802.11b/g/n).
I'm interested in adding a Networked hard disk to the network (not through using the router's USB port) for the sole purpose of Time Machine backups.
From what I know, Time Machine doesn't work with NAS's apart from the Time Capsule (which from looking at it, would be a waste of money as I don't want to use it as a router.)
From what I've read, the Time Capsule can be connected by ethernet to the existing router (or switch), and have all it's Wi-Fi & routing functions turned off - making it only work for it's NAS HDD (that'll work with Time Machine.)
Now that seems like quite a waste of money on a £200 device that has WiFi etc built in.
Now, thinking about it, one of the locations I'd put the Time Capsule when connect as above, has bad wireless reception......
From what I've read (especially this thread), when the Time Machine is connected as above, and I disable the Time Capsule's built in router and DHCP server, it can be assigned a different SSID (my network already has 2 (one for 2.4ghz & one for 5ghz)) and it'll be broadcasting without interfering my existing network.
My wireless devices could be given the Time Capsule's SSID & encryption details, and would be able to connect to that or the Linksys (depending on where abouts in the house they were) - and as both networks are connected together, all shared HDD's and internet would work fine joining together over the three SSID's from the Linksys & Time Capsule.
The tricky bit, is there a way of having the Time Capsule repeat/boost the signal coming from the Linksys? (instead of broadcasting on a different SSID, it'd be acting as a Wireless Access Point).
From my research about repeating, I know that WDS is needed, and accoring to here[ the Linksys WRT600N supports it. (whatever it actually is!)
So, would the Time Capsule be able to repeat/boost the Linksys's signal? If so, how? (I'd keep the two router's connected together by gigabit as obviously the location of the Time Capsule would be one where the Linksys's signal struggles to reach.)
Anything wrong with the idea of broadcasting on a different SSID? And any ideas about broadcasting on the same SSID?

Your scenario has Time Capsule connected via Ethernet to the Linksys. To extend the Linksys's wireless network, simply configure the Time Capsule to use (a) the same SSID as the Linksys, (b) the same encryption type/level/password as the Linksys, and (c) a channel as far as possible from the one used by the Linksys.
For all wireless clients there would be one big wireless network.
There is no need for WDS.

HT201250 Time Capsule Problems - Flashing Amber

Hi, I just purchased Time Capsule to use as a storage device for Time Machine. This was my first attempt to use Time Machine. I tried connecting via AirPort, but ultimately couldnt get the restart to work...so i just went with the ethernet cable. I believe its working (i can see the back-up'd files in Finder), but the light continues to flash amber. Problem? How do i fix it?

Macbook/Time Capsule Question

Hello all,
So here is my dilemma. I have all of my iTunes media stored on my time capsule rather than my Macbook to help conserve space. The problem arrives when I loose my network connection. Often, (and seemingly for no reason at all) the connection between my MB and Time Capsule breaks, and I am forced to re-do (i.e. iTunes-Preferences-advanced-Change location) every time this happens. Is there a way to keep my connection constant, or adjust iTunes to do a similar thing? I'm thinking I may be able to do it with Automator or some other type of script edit.

You don;t need the TC drive icon to be on your desktop for a backup to successfully occur. A proper Time Machine backup will mount the TC hard disk (green drive icon with clock), then mount the Disk Image (white drive icon). Then when the backup is complete, Time Machine will eject (unmount) the disk image (white drive icon), and then eject (unmount) the TC hard disk (green dirve icon with clock).
It will NOT unmount the TC Hard disk (green drive icon with clock) if you already had the hard disk mounted on your desktop. But it should ALWAYS unmount the disk image (white drive icon). Otherwise you may begin experiencing backup failures the next time one is initiated.
So next time you arrive at the office, try initiating a backup WITHOUT mounting the TC hard disk. Time Machine is smart enough to know when the disk is available or not. If you get error messages when you try, let us know exactly what they say.
Also, make sure that, when you close your MacBook to sleep at the end of the day, you have ejected any drives you see on the desktop first. Doing so cleanly severs the connection. Not doing so leaves the Mac OS hanging wondering where they are next time you wake it from sleep. On the other hand, if you shut down each time, that accomplishes the same thing.

Time capsule question

i just bought a 3tb time capsule. I have an external harddrive plugged into the time capsule via usb. I can't see that external drive in finder, why?

It is the wrong type.. ie not all drives are visible to USB on the TC.. you often need a hub.. and if you get a hub buy a powered one.

But most of the trouble people have is they do not format it properly. For external to work, you must plug it into the computer and format it HFS+ (FAT32 works but is not recommended).

Macbook to Time Capsule question

I have redirected my music folder to be on my time capsule, therefore freeing up space. My problem is at least once a week when I open itunes the fodler has reverted back to my macbook and i have to reconnect to the time capsule in order to find the files to play music or watch a movie. I also get a server interuption pop up and it asks to to ignore or continue. How can I get my macbook to always hold that connection????

Does the time capsule work with Windows 7? Im trying to get completley away from PC and I need to get all my stuff off my Windows 7 computer.....

If you're into redundancy you can get a Drobo FS . They're pretty expensive (about $1000+ once you add all the drives) but good. You connect it to your router with the CAT 6 cable that comes with it.

In principle they should all be Mac compatible, and once you connect them to your router you will be able to access them wirelessly from your computer. Do some research and figure out what features you want your network storage to have. Some things to think about are ease of use, data redundancy, data transfer rate, and cooling.
