HT201250 Time Capsule won't backup 2nd computer.

I have a Time Capsule 802.11n (3rd Gen). I have been backing up my Macbook Pro for over a year.  Recently when I tried to backup my wife's desktop Mac, Time Machine gave me this message: "This backup is too large for the backup disk".  Time Capsule contines to accept new backups from my laptop by deleting earlier data. Any suggestions how to handle this?

i did, but i rebooted the time capsule by pulling the ac cord from the outlet, waiting 30 seconds, and then plugging it in again.
my wifi seemed to return to normal (so far) and i was able to do a full backup, wireless, which took about 2 hours, without my wifi crashing, which i considered a miracle.
don't get me started on all the other problems though. i highly rec

My Time Capsule won't allow my computer to back up.  It says it is already in use but that is what it is being used for. It has been working fine for years.  All of a sudden I keep getting a message that TC (time capsule) cannot complete back up as it is already in use.  I am doing the backups automatically through Time Capsule.

Restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting and reconnecting the power adapter. When it's back online, open the AirPort Utility application and check to see whether there's a firmware update for it.

  • Multiple Time Capsule Problems - WDS, Backup Crashes Computer

I am having TWO major faults with my new Time Capsule:
    1. Kernel failure: My machine crashes every time Time Machine tries to do an hourly backup to my Time Capsule. I get the message : "btreeswapnode: about to write corrupt node!\n"........ I have turned backup off for the moment. The Kernel error causes the gray "curtain" to drop over the screen saying that your Mac requires you to push in the power button for a restart. Certainly not what you expect from a May.
    2. Support of a WDS network: I have two brand new Airport Expresses (80211.n) that I tried to add to my Time Capsule to make a WDS network. Should be pretty straight forward. I have the latest version of Airport Utility and updated the firmware on each of the devices. I am now watching one (not both, mind you) of the Airport Expresses blink "green" and then "yellow" in 3 second intervals. It is switching between being a part of the WDS and then not being able to see the Time Capsule. I have done multiple restarts, checked configurations.
My CONCLUSION is that the TIME CAPSULE is NOT READY for prime time.

OK, I have been able to move forward.
My kernel failures were happening on my MacBook Pro, but my iMac was backing up just fine.
From the iMac I was able to connect to Time Capsule and delete the "sparsebundle" for the MBP.
Then, I initiated a new backup of the MBP and all is well so far. The MBP backed up it's 70 G to the TC and hourly backups have proceeded from there.
It appears that some kind of "corruption" of the sparsebundle folder on TC causes the host machine to panic.
Don't totally understand why. I'd expect an error message, not a crater.

  • New HD, restored using time capsule, won't backup anymore

I just put in a new HD in my MBP. I booted from the old HD using an external enclosure and did a 'restore lion' from time capsule.
Things are working well on the computer front, but back ups and time capsule are screwed up.
    - Time machine is trying to back up the entire drive again. I could live with that, except it keeps stalling at 186MB of transferred data (It was left for hours to see if it could transfer more)
    - I thought I'd just see if I could re-format the drive and start over fresh... Unfortunately, this isn't going well. The drive does not appear in the disk utility. I can see the sparsebundle, but can't erase it. This is wierd since I can see the drive as a part of the shared network.
So how do I start over again with my back ups? How do I reset the time capsule drive without being able to see it in the disk utility. OR, how do I make the time capsule drive appear in the disk utility.

You cannot erase the Time Capsule drive using Disk Utility.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Disks icon
Click the Disks tab below the icon
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a few minutes

Okay, I dragged the .sparsebundle file over to DiskUtility and verified and repaired it (in that order). No luck, I still can't perform a backup.

My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home wireless network for several hours each day -- usually between 1000-1830 or so. My modem is working correctly and I can still get on-line by going straight from my computer (MacBook Pro) to the Ethernet port. It must be the Time Capsule -- any ideas?

    Any ideas?
    Wireless Interference
Might be caused by a cordless phone in the vicinity. To give you an example, my neighbor.....across the street...used to be able to literally crash my wireless network if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
I discovered this by accident one day after spending weeks trying figure out why my network would crash at random times.
Other possibilities include a wireless security/camera system near you
Still other things might be an amateur ham radio operator....which should not interfere....but again from experience, I know that this can occur.
Yet another possibility is another wireless network near you that is being turned on and off at random times. Some users power up their modem/router only when they want to do so and leave it off otherwise.
Some general rules to help avoid interference:
Move any cordless phones that you might have as far away as possible from the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid placing other electronic devices....computer, television, amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. near the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid metal surfaces near the Time Capsule and/or your computers
Elevate the Time Capsule as much as possible. Think of it as a water sprinkler....you want to get the room as wet as possible
Experiment with different wireless channels on the Time Capsule. To do this:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click on the Time Capsule
    Click Edit
    Click the Wireless tab
    Click Wireless Options
Start with Channel 11 on the 2.4 GHz band and work your way down
It is unlikely that you are picking up interference on the 5 GHz band since there are.....for now at least.....far fewer networks using this frequency.

  • Time Capsule won't back-up; it just stays at "Preparing Backup" What can I do to resolve it?

My Time Capsule won't back-up--it just stays at "Preparing Backup" while trying to perform the backup. Do I need to reboot, and if so, how do I do that? Thanks!

On Leopard, it's hard to tell what's going on.  See #D1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Having trouble with time capsule, won't find backups

having trouble with time capsule, won't find backups

Usually a simple reboot will work.. Reboot the TC..
If that is not enough.. Restart the whole network from off.
Mountain Lion and to a lesser extent Lion.. have network issues and lose track of the TC.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and storage?

Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and put files from my other USB external hard drive on it, using the TC as an external as well?

Actually, there is a way to limit the amount of space Time Machine uses for backup so that it won't eat up all your disk space...for example, I have mine set to only use 65GB, and then it starts to overwrite older backups...Google it for more info. To begin with, I deleted my Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule, and used Disk Utility to create a Sparse Disk Image Bundle (turn off backups first!!!) with a capacity of 65GB in HFS Journaled, Case Sensitive...The Image must be named as follows "Full Computer Name_Ethernet MAC Address" (The ethernet MAC address is used even if you plan to solely use wifi for backups). for example, my Sparse Disk Image Bundle name is "Ahmad Atiya's MacBook Pro_00254b9d8f72.sparsebundle" Move this image to your time capsule's main directory (if you didn't create it there to begin with). Go to your Time Machine preferences, turn it on, and set it to use your Time Capsule. It should start using the image you created. If you click "get info" on the disk image, it'll show a capacity of whatever you created.

  • Time Capsule won't mount after upgrade to iTunes 9

See my full post in the Time Capsule support section ("Help! Time Capsule won't mount after installing iTunes 9"). My music library is on my Time Capsule, but after installing iTunes 9, it won't mount on my iMac G5. I can use the internet, but the disk won't mount. My Powerbook hasn't been updated yet and the Time Capsule mounts fine.

To make it easier, here's the post:
"My music library is on my 500 Gb Time Capsule. I just installed iTunes 9 on my iMac. It updated my library and synced my iPhone. Now, the TC won't mount. I still have internet connectivity, but I can't access my media or print to my printer connected to the TC. I can use the computer and everything, but if I hover my mouse over the TC disks menu bar icon, I get the spinning beach ball there. If I try to connect using my Network icon in the sidebar, it allows me to log in and get to the screen to select the volume I want to mount, then stops responding. In the Activity Monitor, AFP Client & AirPort Base Station Agent are not responding. I also have a Powerbook G4 w/Leopard (10.5.8) which hasn't been updated to iTunes 9 yet. The Time Capsule mounted fine on it."

  • Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
    Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.

  • My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

  • Time Capsule won't back up, privilege message error HELP!

Time Capsule used to work, now it doesn't.
    1) I go to System Preferences > Time Machine
    2) I click on Change Disk...
    3) Window drops down and I select my Time Capsule, then click on Use for Backup
    4) Window pops up saying "Enter your user name and password so Time Machine can access the file server "name of my Time Capsule". No field for user name, just Password - so I enter this and click on Connect.
    5) Drop down window appears saying: "The specified user does not have read, write and append privileges on this network volume. Please connect as a different user or contact your network administrator."
Thing is - I am the admin.
Can't figure out how to rectify this. Have already tried restoring factory settings to Time Capsule but run into same problem.
    Any ideas?

Exact same problem. In addition, Time Capsule won't let me create new folders in the root (/data) folder anymore, although I can still read and write files in already existing folders.
I thought it was because I upgraded to Snow Leopard, so I did a clean install of Leopard OS on my Mac Pro with erasing the HDD, but still no luck.
