HT201250 Time Machine and Mavericks

Time Machine under Mavericks won't allow me to add or change my Time Machine drive. I click the Select Drive button, and nothing happens. Any ideas?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

  • Time Machine and Mavericks

Has anyone experienced slow Time Machine backup times since upgrading to Mavericks? I've experienced extremely slow backup times on both Western Digital and (currently) Seagate (Seagate Backup Plus drive) drives since upgrading. Is there a fix/remedy?

    Izaak96 wrote:
No, I'm not using any extra software.
Both of these drives (the WD and the Seagate) have gotten high reviews.
I can't comment on the Seagate, but WD drives come with incompatible, unnecessary software on the drive; incompatible, unnecessary software that they want you to install on your Mac; and in some cases, incompatible firmware in the drive enclosure.
I'd make sure you don't have any of that software, and that your WD is not one of those with the incompatible firmware. There's an update on the WD website for the firmware, if you trust them.
I have a LaCie Porsche external HD and also a Fantom Greendrive, both of which work fine for TM.
Also if you have third-party antivirus software that might be the problem.

  • HT201250 Time machine and parallels

I need to replace the iMac 1TB Seagate drive. I run parallels with Win 8 and the latest Mac OS.
Will I have trouble restoring from Time Machine?

Not as long as you have selected to include your Parallels in Time Machine backups.
    Probably better to phrase it this way: as long as you did not exclude the VM in Time machine back up preferences;

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard?  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
    1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
    2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
    3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

  • Maverick and Time Machine and backup

I moved to maverick. My time machine indicator at the top right of my imac does not spin when it is backing up. It used to with Lion. Is this normal.
When adding Maverick. Is it normal my external hard drives seem to view the first back up and a new one, and is taking more than an hour to back up?
    thanks,

    Hi John et al,
    Update: Finally...
At least for the Promise Pegasus R4... but I noticed on other threads that WD drives are also acting up too so this might work with them too.
I turned off Time Machine, and deleted that pesky .plist file, again. I unplugged the R4, power and thunderbolt, then played whack the gopher with the drives swapping them around randomly.  I reintalled Mavericks from a fresh download, yet again, then set Time Machine to backup on a fast USB 3TB drive (which it did in 6 hours or so).  Then I turned off Time Machine, deleleted that .plist file again, rebooted the iMac, plugged in the R4, reformatted it again with Disk Utility, then hooked it to Time Machine, said a few slightly heretic prayers to whatever demons came with Maverick, and 2 minutes later Time Machine started to backup and report 1 hour to complete... the hour isn't up yet, but I'm crossing everything I have 2 of...
I've noticed a few other 'didn't copy over or mesh well' things with Maverick, but that's a different thread and 2 updates from now once we all suffer through this extended beta-test by Apple.

  • HT201250 Can I partition my external hard drive and use one partion for time machine and the other one for data that i may want to use in different computers?

I have this doubt. I've just bought an external drive, especifically a Seagate GoFlex Desk 3 tb.
I want to know if it is recomendable to make a partion exclusively for time machine and let another one so I can put there music, photos, videos, etc that I should need to use or copy to another computer.
May half and half, 1.5 tb for time machine and 1.5 tb for data.
I have an internal hard drive of 500 GB (499.25 GB) in my macbook pro.
    Any recommendation?

As I said, yes. Be sure your Time Machine partition has at least 1 TB for backups.
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. Am i keeping my files in the portable hard disk when I will connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will erase all?
I would like to know if after I erase all my data, empy hard drive inside the macbook, the time machine will erase all my files that I have saved in my "WD "My passport" external hard drive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.

Seems that you have to update Logic to the latest version (9.0.15) to get it to work in Lion.

  • HT201250 I accidentally didn't save a document on my desktop--a report.  Can I go back with time machine and recover my desktop and save the file?

I accidentally didn't save a document on my desktop--a report.  Can I go back with time machine and recover my desktop and save the file?

If you saved it at least once, then time machine should have a copy of the document at the state you last saved it.  I'm guessing tha's not the case however or the copy of the file would still be on your Desktop.
If you never saved it a single time, yet closed the window and dismissed the warnings about an unsaved document, then you are out of luck as far as I know.

  • Restore calendar using Time Machine in Mavericks?

I lost my calendar information due to a mistake I made after upgrading to Mavericks. But, I've been using Time Machine for a long time. So, is there a way to restore my calender using Time Machine? All the instructions I found were Snow Leopard or Lion specific and didn't help at all. Thanks in advance!

After searching around a bit, I believe this will resolve my issue:
If a specific calendar, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Calendars. Enter Time Machine and restore.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • Time Machine Restore (Mavericks) - failure

Hey community! Question for you... I have a 2010 MBP (unibody) and I had swapped out my HD for an SSD a year ago. 2 weeks ago I was backing up my machine (via an external HD) with Time Machine and headed to bed. Woke up to the ol' grey screen of death, after talking to a few Geniuses at the Apple Bar they determined my SSD was dead. I sadly went back and found my original HD (which still had versions of my old HD from last year) formatted it and cleared it to try to restore it from Time Machine. After a number of errors (wouldn't work), I tried to install Mavericks (from a USB drive) and then used Setup Assistant to try to restore from my latest backup.  It got about 10% of the way through and said "an error occurred while restoring from the backup" - I have tried a few times since but with no luck. I wasn't sure if this was due to my time machine backup being a slightly different version of Mavericks (maybe I missed a minor update, but I definitely had Mavericks on my machine) or if the final snapshot on Time Machine was corrupted in some way (since my HD died in the middle of the night I'm not sure if the backup was complete or not).
What is strange is, after giving up on Setup Assistant, I tried to use Migration Assistant and that seemed to work ok (my files are all there as are my apps, but all the permissions are a bit weird, and my iMessages didn't come over etc.) - my ideal would be to clear this HD again and try to get it all restored so that all my settings are kept (from my setup 2 weeks ago before my HD died).  The reason I bring up the Migration Assistant point is to suggest that all my files are there so it seems like that last Time Machine snapshot was effective.
    Thoughts?! (Really appreciate it)

  • I had to restore my IMac back via Time Machine because Mavericks keeps crashing

I had to restore my IMac back via Time Machine because Mavericks keeps crashing on install, it gets down to less then one minute, and I get a white screen with the apple in the middle.  Now I have version 10.8.5, but if I try to download again it states that I need version 10.7. Now How do I get 10.7, and dowload Mavericks?? Help

You shouldn't need 10.7. Something is messed up with the App Store.
    3 things you can try.
    1. - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
    - Quit the App Store
    - In Finder - Go>Go to folder...  (or Apple-shift-G)
    - Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
    - It will take you to a folder.  Delete com.apple.appstore
    - Launch the App Store.
    2. Try resetting the App Store.

You can also try creating another admin user and see if you can download it there.

  • Can I have two Time Capsules in the same network, use one as Time Machine and other to expand network?

I need to purchase a divice to expand my Wi-fi network. I was looking at the AirPort Extreme, but a friend has a brand new Time Capsule for sale. So, for the same price of the AirPort Extreme, I´m getting the Time Capsule.
I already own one and using it as Time Machine and wireless router. If I decide to purchase another TC would it have any conflict with the one that I already have?
Is it possible to use one as Time Machine and wireless router and the other to just expand network and storage only (not as Time Machine)?

If I decide to purchase another TC would it have any conflict with the one that I already have?
    No
Is it possible to use one as Time Machine and wireless router and the other to just expand network and storage only (not as Time Machine)?
Yes. The important thing to remember is that the "extending" Time Capsule must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your "main" Time Capsule.
