HT201250 time machine backups?

Hi, I bought a new mac so I took all the information of the old one and made a back up on time machine BUT the thing is I had snow leopard in the old one and well the new in the new one and i can't open many files or apps how can I enter in time machine of the old one?

You should have Migrated from the Time Machine backup. That's the easiest way.
You can still do so, but if you set up the new Mac with the same username as the old one, it may be more difficult.
To Migrate the old data, open Migration Assistant from the Utilities folder and follow the prompts.
You can also Option-click the Time Machine icon and choose "Browse Other Backup Disks" and restore files that way.

  • HT201250 Time Machine backup disk not found

I recently reconfigured my external disks, creating a 500GB oartition for Time Machine backup. thefirst time I set up Time machine to use that partition all went well. Seconed time it failed "cannot find backup disk."
This is a 24 inch, mid 2007 iMac OS X 10.8.2.  I am using two external backup drives - 1T LaCie with 4 partitions and a BlackX removable adaptor with a WD 1T drive plugged in.  Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  In the view below the top "Time Machine" drive at the top is a duplicate of the last drive in the list.
If I select the top drive - I have the option to "Remove Disk" - NOT to "Use this Disk." So I have to select the bottom "Time Machine" drive.  The backup will then run once but on the second try I get "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Machine". Unable to complete backup. An error occured while creating backup folder."  Whether I remove the top listed disk or not doesn't seem to matter, sometimes it finds the drive, sometimes not!
The BlackX is a USB connected directly to the iMac.  The other partition on that drive contains movie clips and they run fine.
There is a backup folder on the Time Machine drive with six backups - however I have to "reset" the Time Machine each time to get it to backup.  It craps out on the second try every time.  Got me buffaloed!  Any ideas?

Assuming you have nothing on your Time Machine volume that you need, erase that volume and Verify it from Disk Utilities. Repair if necessary. Then, go into the Time Machine Preferences and Remove the selected drive to use. Now, reselect it and try a backup.

  • HT201250 Time machine backup permission issue

    Hi,
We setup time machine backups in an office environment which is managed by a mac OS X Lion server.
Each device on the network (all mac minis) is configured to take hourly backups to the drive on our server.
On some occasions, a device requests an admin username and password whilst time machine is backing up.
We believe this may be caused by backupd attempting to access parts of the file system it is not authorized to as each device has application restrictions set in profile manager. Computers that do not have application/directory restrictions do not get the admin prompt.
Here is a dump of the backupd daemon (and other possibly related processes) whilst a user was prompted for a password:

The backup seems to finish successfully even if the user doesn't enter the username/password. Any ideas why this would be happening and how to avoid it? Could this be fixed by running a full backup as admin so that time machine doesn't have to backup these inaccessible files (to normal users) anymore?
    Thanks for your help

I'm not familiar with the server product, but the actual backup process should be the same as on the client version.
On some occasions, a device requests an admin username and password whilst time machine is backing up.
Does it say Admin password, or could it be a password for the backup device?

We see that occasionally.  It seems to be spurious, or at least not a significant problem.

    Yes, that's the "bottom line."
Could this be fixed by running a full backup as admin so that time machine doesn't have to backup these inaccessible files (to normal users) anymore?
No.  However a backup runs, it runs as the root user, so has access to everything.

  • HT201250 Time Machine backups are extremely slow

Time Machine backups filled an older, smaller external HD, began deleting oldest files.  TM backups began to be very slow, I assumed because of the deletion of older files.  I replaced external HD with a new LaCie 3.0TB external HD (p9233).  Backups are still very slow, take a very long time.  It appears TM is backing up all files each time it runs - literally hundreds of thousands of files each backup when only a few files should have changed from one hour to the next.  I have tried on and off as well as setting up TM anew, nothing seems to affect time and speed.  Any help?

TIme Machine needs work spave on the backup disk in addition to the space required to store backups.  Open Time Machiine prefences to select a larger ackup disk or make the back up smaller by exluding files."

  • HT201250 Time machine backup to external drive

I have left my backup drive plugged in overnight after not using it for quite a while.  Time Machine has not updated my backup drive.  Do I need to do more than plug it into the USB port?

Be sure Time Machine and the drive are both ON.  Try a Back Up Now from the TM icon in your menubar, and see what happens.

  • HT201250 Time machine backup to new macbook

I am purchasing a new macbook.
If I use time machine and want to incorporate its backup into a new macbook, does it back up my itunes backup information of my iphone as well?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine makes a backup of everything on your OS X partition except you want to exclude some data. Also, if you want to restore files, you can choose what you want to restore, so the answer is that your iPhone backups will also be backed up

  • HT201250 Time Machine backup of internal AND external hard drive

I have an iMac with an internal hard drive for everything BUT photos and music and an external hard drive for only photos and music. If I hook up a second external hard drive will Time MAchine back up both my external (music/photos) hard drive AND my internal hard drive?

You will be able to back up the external drive, but you will have to modify settings. Time Machine only makes backups of your OS X partition by default.
Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and remove the external drive from excluded items, so it will be backed up. I recommend ot have your external drive formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"

  • HT201250 Time Machine backup then install new SSD HD + Pulling files from Time Machine from 'old' HD

    Hi Guys,
I currently have a mid 2009 Macbook pro and I decided to upgrade the current HD in it to an Intel 330 SSD. Which might I add was a *gongshow*.
Anyways before I did the switch I used Time Machine to back up all my information, and to be double redundant I backed up the REALLY important information on a 8gig flashdrive.
The removal and reinstall of the new drive went smooth, and once lion was installed I did all the usual system updates.
Once it came to importing files from Time Machine is when my hassle started.
The last backup I did on Time Machine with the old HD still installed was at 10:00 this morning.
I had the new SSD up and running and a new backup of that created by 1:00 (3 hours later).
When I loaded up Time Machine to grab some files off of my 10:00 backup, it would not let me. The current backups have a Grey/Silver snapshot, and the backups from the OLD HD were blacked out and I could not click on them. What can I do to get these files off my Time Machine from the old HD?
    Thanks

    Quick followup question,
If I do a migrate with the time machine will the system be updated to the version I had when I made it (10.8.6 I think) or will I have to do the system updates afterwards. If so, will that cause any clashes when applying the time machine migration?

  • HT201250 Time machine backup fail

I get this message "/Volumes/Data/Toni Martin’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" on backup and backup fails. What does it mean?

Is the rest of the message ". . .sparsebundle ... is already in use"?  If so, see #C12 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, see if you find it in the "C" section of that link.
If not, see #C2 there to display it again, and either post it all or a screenshot.

  • HT201250 How can I migrate a Time Machine backup from an external hard drive to a new TimeCapsuls?

I just got a 2TB Time Capsule.  I want to migrate my time machine backups on an external hard drive to the new Time Capsule.  I have about 430Gb of files to back up; I don't want to wait 7-8 days for the backup, unless I have to.  I am using OS 10.7.5 (forget which cat that is).  I have mounted the TC drive as 10.0.1.1; I tried to drag and drop from old to "data" on TC, but I get the error "The volume is the wrong format for a backup."  Any ideas how I can move my old files to the new, and bypass creating a brand new backup file?
    Thanks.

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.
The instructions on that are here
If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

  • HT201250 Can I copy a time machine backup from one mac to another?

I have two Mac Book Pros that I use for work - I have one at home and one at work. I'd like to copy the contents and setup from my work Mac to my home Mac using a time machine backup, and then continue to use the time machine backup back at work. I.e. the time machine would only be used with the home Mac to copy over the contents and setup of my work Mac.
Can I just do a straight time machine back up in my 2nd (home) mac, or will this override the back up I have from the 1st (work) machine?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Note that you can restore a Time Machine backup on all the Macs you want, always that the Mac uses the same or a newer OS X version than the one that had the Mac you used to make this backup.
Also, you can back up different computers to the same Time Machine drive. In this case, Time Machine will create different folders in your Time Machine drive for each computer, so one Mac backup won't conflict with the other computer backup.
To restore a backup, use Migration Assistant. Just connect the Time Machine drive, open Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps to restore the backup onto the computer

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • HT201250 How do I find out what portable drive was the drive I used for Time Machine Backup?

Hi, I have 10.7.4 and need to figure out what drive I was using for Time Machine Backup.  I have three drives and I have connected each of them to my macbook pro, but I get an error, "Time Machine Error, The backup disk is not available" when I hit the time machine icon on the top of the screen and the "backup delayed" prompt.  If I try Back up Now I get message, "Time Machine could not complete the backup.  Back up disk is not available."  I am trying to figure out what the time machine back up would actually look like as a file on the drives but I don't see a folder/file name Time Machine.  If I enter Time Machine I can see in the far right column, in purple, the last back up date (Sept. 12, 2012), but when I hit it nothing happens.  In the Time Machine preference box the select disk has, in red and to the right, "Delayed" with an "i" within a circle, and the option indicates, "Next backup: when disk is connected."
I know I have a years worth of backups on one of the three drives, but I can't figure out how the heck to find them or how to determine what was the last drive I used for the backups within Time Machine.  Help please.
