Which external hard drive should I use/choose as I am setting up Time Machine on my MacBook Pro 15 for the very first time?

Any of these SATA HDDs that are at least the same size as your internal HDD (preferably larger capacity).  In addition you will need an enclosure, preferably one with a Firewire as well as a USB connection.

    Ciao.

  • I have never used Time Machine, but local snapshots "MobileBackups" show up. Why?

I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups periodically. Therefore, I have never used Time Machine. My TM preference is always OFF. However, I noticed that I have local snapshots on my Volumes folder which is a function of TM to keep backup when I am away from TM backup disk. WHY?
I just want to know why it LOCAL SNAPSHOT shows up although I have never turned on TIME MACHINE on this MacBook Pro EVER. Please dont tell me how to turn Local Snapshots off, I knew the command.
    Thank you in advance!

AFAIK, it's mommy Apple protecting your laptop  from yourself. See Pondini's TM FAQs for possible clarification on this nonsense. I, likewise, don't use TM, preferring CCC bootable clones, but I don't have a laptop.

Time Machine Locked after MacBook Air reformatted. My MacBook Air was overfull due to an Address book issue (duplication) so after many attempts to clear space, I ended up wiping out the system and reloading Lion. This resulted in the Time Machine thinking that it was now connected to a different computer. Apparently this diables the existing information.
Now I can see that the back-ups exist (back to Sept 2012) but they are greyed out, therefore unavailale to restore. Again, this seems like an issue that shouldn't be happening. The whole point of the Time Machine is to enable reinstatement of data after catastrophic failure. What if my computer actually had to be replaced due to a hardware issue? How would I beableto restore anything?
    The path already (unsuccessfully) taken;
Open Library on the computer, Open Time Machine, Select Correct date, drill down to correct data you wish to restore, click "Restore".
This did not work because the correct date was greyed out. Restore key was greyed out.

  • I've recently received an error message from Time Machine that my Macbook Pro's sparsebundle is in use.  What is this and what can I do about it?

I've recently received an error message from Time Machine that my Macbook Pro's sparsebundle is in use.  What is this and what can I do about it?

This is asked at least 5-6 times a day here.
Look at the right hand column.. more like this.
It is a bug in Mountain Lion.
    Read C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But the fast solution.. unplug the TC.. count to 10.. plug it back in.

I restored Pages from Time Machine to my MacBook Pro and I cannot open it.  How can I open it?

You don't get all files you need from Time Machine. Do a reinstallation and updates from you iWork disc or if you bought from AppStore install from AppStore but then you have to uninstall first.

  • 2 user folders after time machine backup. Macbook Pro 13", Mac OS X 10.6.8

After a time machine backup my macbook pro runs fine, however the backup has created a 2nd user file. my new user file is now named like my old one, just with " 1" added. I have 2 user folders, can I delete the old one?
After a random check of the content in both user folders I found out that it's not identical. Some files that weren't backed up with the time machine before the re-setup are in the original folder, while the new uder folder obviously only backup what it could find on the time machine disc. (Time machine backed up my whole hdd about 2 days before the crash & re-setup)
Due to this situation my local HDD is almost full now. The original user folder has 205 GB, the new one user 1 has 210 GB, plus applications with a 500GB HDD, I now have only 44GB left.
Can I delete the old user folder?
Can I then re-name the new one (user 1) back to "user"?
    Thanks
    J.

I've never heard of a 'problem' as you're having - and I searched Pondoni's Time Machine Troubleshooting FAQs and couldn't fine anythig similar.
I would be wary of deleting anything manually from your TM backup - the sparsebundles are rather sensitive. If you like, however, you could always erase your TM backups and start anew... that's the only way I would know to 'fix' the problem.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • TS4212 I can't configure Time Machine on my Macbook Pro?

I can't configure Time Machine on my Macbook Pro?

Would you care to say what happens when you try to configure it?

  • Can I restore Time Machine "B" to Macbook "A"  and then back again?

My family had 2 Macbooks-- I'll call them A and B -- each equipped with an external USB hard drive that we used for regular Time Machine backups.
Macbook B contained some digitized family videos.  About 8 months ago it was destroyed by spilled coffee (family member shall remain unnamed!)  Apple tech said it would cost as much to repair as it would to replace, and I ended up doing neither.  Coffee-spilling family member went off to college with a new Macbook Pro (equipped with a thin plastic keyboard cover!!!)
Macbook A continues to be used, and backed up (by a family member who doesn't drink coffee, BTW).
I would like to recover those video files -- at least to burn them onto DVD's or whatever -- but I'm assuming the only way to access files from a Time Machine backup is to restore that backup onto a Macbook.
So I'm wondering if I can be sneaky by restoring Time Machine "B" onto Macbook "A", getting those video files copied off it, and then restoring Time Machine "A" back onto Macbook "A" again.   Would there be any ill-effects from doing this?
    Thanks!
    Joe

    No. See:

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

  • "Time Machine can't back up - sparsebundle error 1" question

    Hi,
I'm getting the "Time Machine can't back up - sparsebundle error #1" message, and am trying to see if the fix posted below is the answer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2048
So, when I installed Time Capsule, I gave it a password ("network password").
Fairly recently, I renamed the Airport.  Now the Airport disk password and Airport base station password are the same as the network password, and the Airport network password is different.
Is this what the Apple support message I referenced is getting at?  Are these passwords supposed to be the same...  ???
    Thanks for any help,
    reluctantuser

I'm not sure what you mean by "We also used the Time capsule as a hard drive for backing up." after you've already mentioned that you use Time Machine to back up three Macs to the Time Capsule.
Check this Web page for advice on the space issue.

  • HT201250 If I use Time Machine on my MacBook can I use the hard drive on the same MacBook as the back up drive ?

I want to use Time Machine but instead of using a hard drive outside of the MacBook, would I be able to use the hard drive that is in the computer?
Would I be able to use a memory stick ?

It defeats the purpose of having a backup if you keep it on the same drive. That's your safety if your drive fails.
Also, you should allow about double the space of the volume you are backing up.
EDIT: Time Machine does keep local snapshots on your drive

  • HT201250 Time Machine migrate to a new Macbook Pro and keeping Logic plugins

So, I'm getting a new macbook pro (the latest 15" with the highest spec) and I'm looking to transfer everything using Time Machine, so that it's as if I'm still using the same machine. I use Logic 9 and I have hundreds of expensive plugins and I want to be sure that they will transfer across and I won't need to buy any of them again. I appreciate that some may have compatabiity issues, but that aside, will everything transfer as if I'm using the same machine and it will all be exactly the same?

    Hello there, micchaelfrombarnes.
As per the article you were referred to us from, Time Machine should be able to restore your new MacBook  to be just like your current one:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Time Machine automatically backs up your entire Mac, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, email messages, music, photos, movies, and documents.
    Additionally:
Migrating a Time Machine backup to a new Mac
When you get a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made. When you start up your new Mac for the first time, the Setup Assistant asks you if you would like to restore from backup. If you've already set up your new Mac, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities) to do the same thing.
After Migration Assistant completes the transfer and you select your existing Time Machine backup drive, you will be prompted with "Inherit Backup History". Once selected you will be able to continue to use your existing Time Machine backup on your new Mac.
For a more detailed instruction on how to migrate the data from your Time Machine backup, refer to this article:
OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • HT201250 Time machine backup to new macbook

I am purchasing a new macbook.
If I use time machine and want to incorporate its backup into a new macbook, does it back up my itunes backup information of my iphone as well?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine makes a backup of everything on your OS X partition except you want to exclude some data. Also, if you want to restore files, you can choose what you want to restore, so the answer is that your iPhone backups will also be backed up

  • HT201250 Can I move part of a Time Machine for my Macbook to an iMac?

I just spilled water on my Macbook.  I was wondering if I can move some of my Time Machine files to my Imac which uses 10.7.5.  The Macbook pro had Mavericks
    Thanks
    Michelle

You can move the files, but they won't be accessible to Time Machine itself.  You'll have to manually cherry pick the data out.
