First: Are you wearing/regularly checking your radiation badge?
Second: What does the little Time Machine icon (in the menubar) say when you click on it?  Alternatively, what does Time Machine Preferences (in System Preferences) tell you is going on?

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore  should be very smooth.

It's not clear whether you were able to do any backups to this drive at all.  If not, it's probably not formatted properly.  See #5 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for instructions.
If you did get any successful backups, there may be a problem with the drive, or the backups may be corrupted.  Try to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Try putting it into "Disk Mode" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Then with it in this mode connect it to the PC and try to run the latest iPod updater to do a restore and update software if you have the option. the latest iPod updater is 2006-03-23 and can be downloaded here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

  • Time Machine makes several huge backups a day

    Hi,
I backup my Macbook Pro wirelessly with Time Machine to my Time Capsule.
This has been working great for about a year now. However since a week or so it keeps making these huge backups several times a day.
And by huge I mean 50GB+. I have tried D4 on the troubleshooting page but it did not work.
Any help would be greatly apreciated!
    Specs:
    - Macbook Pro 15" 2,53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    - Running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    - Time Capsule 802.11n

@Pondini: Well once I completed the steps and Time Machine was fully configured again, it went right back to the 59GB backup it kept doing before.
Are we taking about the same #D4 (in Time Machine - Troubleshooting)?
It has a number of common causes of extra-large backups, and links to #A2, which has a couple of apps that will show you just what's getting backed-up, so you can take corrective action.

  • Hp Laserjet 100 color MFP  M175nw does not appear as an AirPrint Printer. How do I make it detectable?, Hp Laserjet 100 color MFP  M175nw does not appear as an AirPrint Printer. How do I make it detectable?

    Hi all,
I have bought a new printer that was compatible with the AirPrint feature. But when I select print for a photo in the iPhone's photo album, the printer won't appear.
There is no clear litterature online that explains how to make the printer detectable. I suspect it should be done automatically.
However I keep on trying and the printer won't show up.
Would anyone would know how to fix this?
    Thank you
    Sanya

I just got this same printer.
You have to upgrade the firmware in order to use Airprint.  Go to the HP support page for this printer and download the latest firmware update. Here's the direct link:

Open the .dmg file and follow the directions.  It's pretty easy.

  • Time Machine does not appear to auto delete old backups

I would like old backups to be automatically deleted, but so far does not appear to have occurred as I have not received any warnings. I have checked the box in the setup dialog box to do so. I have only 60GB remaining and receive warnings from Tech Tools that the free space threshold is at 2% remaining.
Does the drive have to be fully exhausted before older backups are automatically deleted (causing the warning), and if so should I turn off the Tech Tools warning for remaining disc space for that drive?
I am using an OWC Mercury Elite AL Pro 2TB external drive with an eSATA connection. Our typical business files can range from 100 to 300MB each. In the Apple Support Mac 101 Time Machine article it states "As your backup disk begins to fill up to its capacity, Time Machine intelligently deletes the oldest backups to make room for newer ones (and will alert you if the "Warn when old backups are deleted" option is selected in Time Machine preferences)." To date, this warning has not appeared making me think no deletions have occurred.
    Thanks for any thoughts, Scott

The oldest backup(s) won't be deleted until there isn't room for a new one. And "warning" is a bit misleading -- when there isn't enough space, the backup will fail, without deleting anything, until you deselect the option. See #C4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Note that this has changed for Snow Leopard; it does the deletion(s) automatically, then sends a notice.
and if so should I turn off the Tech Tools warning for remaining disc space for that drive?
Yes. That accomplishes nothing. Time Machine manages it's space automatically.
To date, this warning has not appeared making me think no deletions have occurred.
That's not strictly true; it applies only when Time Machine has to delete your oldest backups to make room for new ones. But it also deletes "expired" backups every time it does a new one. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • HT201250 Time Machine not keeping hourly backups.

My Time Machine backups don't seem to be working correctly.  It doesn't appear to be keeping hourly backups.  When I enter Time Machine and look at the backup from just one hour ago, the newest file is from several weeks ago, not one hour ago.
Same thing with monthly backups.  At a certain point, the backup history skips several months.
I've scoured the internet but can't seem to find anyone else with this problem or a solution.

That's odd. Mine go away after 24 hours like clockwork.
As VA2020 says, it's probably not a significant space problem, but worth investigating, especially after that long a time.
I'd suggest downloading the Time Machine Buddy widget, which extracts TM's messages from your logs and displays them in a little window. Check your last few backups, especially for messages about "thinning".
As an example, here's my most recent set, showing routine deletion of an hourly:
    *Starting standard backup*
    *Backing up to: /Volumes/TmBackups/Backups.backupdb*
*No pre-backup thinning needed: 133.2 MB requested (including padding), 175.83 GB available*
*Copied 492 files (2.7 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.*
    *Starting post-backup thinning*
*Deleted backup /Volumes/TmBackups/Backups.backupdb/JPs.G5.iMac/2009-01-19-191145: 175.83 GB now available*
*Post-back up thinning complete: 1 expired backups removed*
    *Backup completed successfully.*
If yours look hinky (pardon the technical term), especially any sort of failure message, or not being able to delete old backups, copy and post them here (be careful to get all the messages, as they often overflow the little window).
One question: have you used any of the 3rd part apps or postings about modifying TM's preference file to alter the backup schedule?

  • Macbook wont start makes whirring noise

I got handed back my macbook back by a "friend" today and it is dead - no screen no light on caps lock etc. The battery is still working and charged. When I press the power button the machine emits a continuous whirring noise which continues unless i disconnect the battery. This does not feel good. Any ideas? Thanks

    HI,
Did you try booting from your install disk?
Insert the nstaller disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    Available disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see
Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • Does Time Machine make bootable backups?

I used a beautiful backup program called Backup Simplicity in Tiger that made a bootable Exact duplicate of my HD into my external drive. That's really I want to do.
This morning I tried Time Machine for the first time. It only put a backup folder on my external drive. That's not what I want to do.
So here's my question, if I totally erase my external drive will Time Machine make a bootable duplicate of my HD on my external drive also?
Also, is there a way to schedule Time Machine for backups manually?

No, TimeMachine doesn't create a bootable backup, nor can it be controlled manually. The purpose of TimeMachine is to work behind the scenes backing up changed files. Later, when you realize something is amiss, you can 'go back in time' and fix the problem. Admittedly, I'm a little shaky on the details of just how flexible the retrieval system is since I've not yet played with that feature yet. But as I understand it, if you installed a new program and your computer suddenly started going nuts, you'll be able to use TimeMachine to restore your computer to the point before you installed that program. Or, if you realize you improperly edited a file, you'll be able to retrieve the file prior to that editing session.
Apple's team realized three things: 1) most of us don't take the time to perform backups even though we know we should be doing it. 2) most of us don't really understand how to develop a good backup strategy. 3) computers today are so powerful that most of the time the CPU isn't working hard at all and those extra cycles might as well be put to use doing something useful. Hence, TimeMachine's design.
As you noticed, TimeMachine makes a folder and does its incremental backups inside. Since I have an external drive that is much larger than my boot/data drive, I'll continue to clone my boot drive to this external once a week, just as I've been doing. If disaster strikes and I need to use the computer right now, I can do so and at worst my data will be one week out of date. (I should then be able to use TimeMachine to retrieve the missing data but the important thing is that I'm up and running again as soon as I've rebooted.) Later (or if I have the time right away) I'll use TimeMachine to restore/replace my boot drive.

  • HT201250 Time Machine

Time machine randomly deleted ALL backups two days ago, not just the oldest to make room. Completey "started over" and backed up over 700 gig of information. Now my latest backup is 2 days ago rather than months ago. What happened? My concern is that happening and the Mac crashing and I have no backup. Is this a glitch in the time machine?

  • HT201250 Time Machine taking forever...???

I am backing up 230GB from my local drive to a new external drive using Time Machine.  I am now 24hrs into the process and only 25GB along...should it take this long?

You might start with this link:
    http://pondini.org/TM/D2.html
    and
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Also the other links within these Time Machine general information web sites may shed light on your issue. For instance, you need to format the external backup drive properly, probably not causing your issue, but check this link just in case:
    http://pondini.org/TM/5.html
FYI, my Time Machnie backup for ~ 215 GB took 2.5 hours, yours should be similar, so checking through the above links' list of troubleshooting steps might be worthwhile. Mine was via firewire and USB 2.0 might be somewhat slower, up to a factor of x2, but the time you have been waiting seems excessive.

  • Does Time Machine make back-ups when nobody is logged on?

    Hello,
Does Time Machine make back-ups when nobody is logged on and does it continue to back-up when I log off?
I'm using an directly connected external hard drive to back-up my data with Time Machine, the back-ups are encrypted.
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with Time Machine and solved it by enabling "Enable Power Nap" in Energy Saver:
    System Preferences...
    Energy Saver
    Restore Defaults
Check "Enable Power Nap: While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates."
