How do I access my encrypted User Account files from my Back Up hard drive?  Time Machine  was used to create the back up disk; File Vault was used to encrypt the files.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into

  • HT201250 Time machine does not recognize WD external drive

Time machine and back-ups worked fine on my MacBookPro. It stopped working, no I believe it is still working but the MackBookPro does not recognize it and when clicking "Back up" I receive the message that the external drive is not available. Thanks to Bootcamp the computer also has a Windows side which I use mainly to run a soaring flight simulator called Condor. When I turn on the MacBookPro and click on "Choice" the window I receive shows the Mac and Windows operating systems, the Back-up and "My Passport." When I click on "My passport" it actually opens...When I turn the computer off and reboot it again there is no sign of "My Passport."
Now, I have a second WD My Passport which I bought for the Windows side of the computer. When I attach it before turning on the computer, I shows up on Finder, however, when I click "Back up" here it seems like it is starting back-up but only for a few seconds and then I get the message that the drive is a Windows formatted drive and that a back-up cannot be completed.
Why does the Windows formatted drive show up in Finder and also when I run the Windows side, however, the driver for the Mac does not show up on Finder?
I now have only the Mac formatted external drive attached and I just received the following messages: Can't back up. Reformat the disk. Files can still be read but the drive can no longer be used for back-ups. Get a new external drive. Run back-ups as soon as possible.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

OK, so it sounds like you have a Mac formatted drive that you have used previously for Time Machine, and disconnected it for a few weeks, and you can now see files on it OK from your Mac. However, when the system tries to run a Time Machine backup, you get an error message "Can't backup. Reformat the disk. Files can still be read but the drive can no longer be used for back-ups. Get a new external drive. Run back-ups as soon as possible."
I have not seen this problem before, and would recommend that you look through the Time Machine troubleshooting information at http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
For instance, http://pondini.org/TM/B1.html or http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html could help in your situation.  I'm assuming (but probably shouldn't) that you've verified that your hard drive doesn't need repair (another Disk Utility function) and that there is still a Time Machine backup on that drive - look for the directory Backups.backupdb.
I hope that helps.  If not, perhaps someone with more Time Machine knowledge will pop along soon to help you further.

  • In working with my calendar, i don't know what i might have done, but all entries on Fridays, starting from Friday, March 14, simply disappeared. my time machine was not functioning and am wondering if this info is hiding somewhere in the cloud?

In working with icalendar, i inadvertantly lost all Friday entries after March 14th.  My time machine was not hooked up.  Hoped that the cloud might have this information.

You can check to see if they are still in iCloud by looking at your calendar on icloud.com.  If they are, go to System Preferences>iCloud on your Mac, uncheck Calendars, choose Delete from Mac (they will still be in iCloud), restart your Mac, then go back and sign back in.  If they aren't on icloud.com you might just give it some time to see if they reappear due to a server glitch.

If  you backed up the phone when the video was still on it, restoring the backup will get it back.  However, anything new on the phone since the backup will be deleted.

  • Time machine was not working.  I bought a new time machine and migrated time machine files to new time capsule; not recognized by yosemite

Time machine was not working after yosemite upgrade on new and old MacBooks in my house.  I bought a new time machine and migrated time machine files to new time capsule. I changed the names of the older sparse bundles to the default values.  Yosemite still does not recognize them.

I presume the bought a time machine means a time capsule.
How did you migrate the Time Machine files?
From where? A Time Capsule or external drive?
It is difficult to get TM working with Yosemite.. since it doesn't work after the upgrade on the old TM backup.. it will not work on the migrated files either.
You simply start a new backup and store the old backups for a few months until you are ready to dump them.
The instructions for inheriting old backups is B5 and B6 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
However it is just unlikely to work.. TM in Yosemite is very different. Broken even.
I also strongly recommend people to use Carbon Copy Cloner or some other 3rd party backup until Apple get the bugs fixed. And after several months.. they are still rampant.

  • HT201250 Time Machine connections to external drive on ethernet router

Time machine was able to backup to an external drive connected through a router.  It no longer finds the drive.  What has caused this?

    Hello DamperDan,
The following article provides a number of things worth checking (or double-checking, as the case may be) in order to restore functionality to your setup.

  • How does Time Machine handle disconnected external media drive ?

I have an external drive connected to my iMac, and backup to a Time Capsule.
I prefer not to keep that external media drive connected all the time...
When I disconnect that external media drive and Time Machine runs, does TM perceive this as "deleted"?
With that drive disconnected, does TM then "release" the prior media drive backup and replace it as it needs space?
When I reconnect the external Media Drive, does TM see it as "new" or recognize it as the prior data and (presuming it's not over-written it) simply manage it incrementally?
Ultimately - do I need to either ensure that the external media drive is always available to use TM, or do I run the risk of screwy / uncertain behavior if it is sometimes present, sometimes not.
Gosh I hope that was clear for you experts out there ;-)
    D

an external drive backed up to a TM would forever be retained in the TM... never flushed,
Correct. Except.......if the backup drive is close to becoming full, Time Machine will start to delete the oldest backups to make room for new backups.
So, if you have been backing up the external drive for the last year, and the backup drive is running out of space, you may not be able to go back a full year in Time Machine to see exactly how the external drive looked a year ago.  You might only be able to go back 10 months, for example, instead of 12.
Most users really don't ever need to go back more than a few weeks or maybe a month or two to pick up a file that they might have accidentally deleted, so the fact that you might not be able to go back a full year or more to see how the drive looked at that time in the past, is not really that important for most users.
Most of us need to know that we have a complete, up to date backup of the external drive in case it fails.
Time Machine will warn you whenever it starts to delete the oldest backups, so if you really do need to be able to go back a year, or two years, or however long it has been since you originally started to back up the external......and you don't want Time Machine to start deleting the oldest backups of the external to make more room.....then you will need to add another backup drive and start backing up everything to that new drive.

  • Mavericks Time Machine volume disconnects without eject on sleep

Since upgrading, it has now happened three times that I let the MBP go to sleep on its own, and when I come back in the morning find a message that my Time Machine External Drive was disconnected without being properly ejected. In each case, one more backup was performed after I had left.
When waking up the machine, the drive was not being shown at first, but after a minute, it showed up without me doing anything or changing anything about the setup.
    Anyone else? Any thoughts?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • HT201250 Time Machine can no longer back up files

I was using Time Machine to back up files to a WD Elements hard drive. Lately I started to get error messages the back-up failed. Previously Finder would list back-up files for that drive, but now it only shows empty folders. Get Info still shows 60 GB of used space on the external drive. Can I retrieve those files, or is all lost and I must reformat the hard drive?

I would connect the Time Machine HDD to your Mac and open Disk Utility and select First Aid, Verify the disk and run a Repair if necessary.  If that does not solve the problem, I suspect that the HDD is failing.  Then I suggest transferring the backup data to another HDD, or perhaps just start from square one with a new HDD and back up the entire internal HDD.
    Ciao.

  • Backing up the whole Macbook Pro from a Time Machine was not a good idea

So here's my little story... I've started to had a problem yesterday with a game running with crossover on my mac. Since the game was working fine 2 days ago I've decided to back up my whole computer from my Time Machine. After 5 hours of work the machine restarted and oh! My game work just as fine as it was 2 days ago...
What could go wrong ?? ... Well everything. The first thing I've noticed is that my iPhone 5 would not save anymore... No big deal, deleted all the last saved backup and guess what ? Problem solved. Next thing you know... The notification center was not working anymore... So, after searching a bit decided to reinstall the last update for mountain lion... Problem solved again. The last but not least, Mail app... Decided to check my mail. Whoops.. Crashes. Comptuer restart ... Crashes again. Then it went downhill, super slow... Mail not working... Safari and iMessage went down and iCloud would not work either...
Now ? Factory recovery here I come ! But wait... I have 2 days of file backing ahead of me. 5000 songs + 150 movies + 1500 photos.
Special thanks to Time Machine for all that great work... When you don't need it it's awsome, you can show to all your friends how many backups you have inside this white box...

Reinstall Adobe Reader and reset its preferences to install the plug-in to use it as the default PDF viewer in Safari. Be sure to download the latest version.
Regardless of your sound output preferences the boot chime will always play through the computer's speakers. This is in fact "normal" on the Mac Pro. However, after startup your sound output preferences should remain honored. If this is not the case then there may be a preference problem. However, your description of the problem isn't clear on this.
What was the hardware from which you transferred to the new computer? What OS version had been installed on it? At this point I'm not sure about the third problem.

  • HT201250 Time Machine backup error message.

I am unable to back up my computer as I get this message -
"This backup is to large for the back up disk.  The backup requires 138.28 GB but only 124.10 GB are available. TIme Machine needs work spave on the backup disk in addition to the space required to store backups.  Open Time Machiine prefences to select a larger ackup disk or make the back up smaller by exluding files."
I would appreciate any help as I am lost.  I opened TM and was unable to adjust the file size.
