HT201250 Unexpected problem with Mac time machine!

Hi every one!
I'm having an unexpected problem with my time machine! the moment I hook up the back up drive my Mac crashes and the only thing I can do is to force restart. I'm not sure if the problem is with the back up disk or the Time Machine itself. I've successfully used the app since now and this just happens! I can neither access the disk in finder nor fix it by disk utility... would you please help me?
PS. the disk is encrypted, I doubt that might be causing the problem?!
Thank you!
chargar

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Enter the name of the crashed process in the “Filter” text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any -- the text, please, not a screenshot.
Then, still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash logs related to the process. Select the most recent one and post the contents -- again, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

    My Time Machine says there is no backup disk available.  I've never had any problems with my time machine completing backups.  I was away from house with my laptop for about 9 days so I'm wondering if there is something I need to do now that I'm home to get it working again.  I'm not technologically savvy, so if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Jana

    You can lose your ability to backup through TM for any number of reasons, but the most common is what happens after a update. If your drive still works, your best approach is to read this:

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

    I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

    Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

  • Privilege problem with old Time Machine backup

    There are all kinds of posts about privilage problems, but I can't find my answer.  I did a clean install of Snow Leopard, and now I want to only drag my iTunes library and iPad backup files from my time machine backup onto the computer.  I can access all the files on the backup drive, including MobileSync and my iTunes folder, but when I try to pull them off the drive I get the terrible message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “MobileSync”."  The sharing & permissions for the folder say "read & write" for my user, and the "Locked" box isn't checked in the Get Info window.  When I click on the settings gear in the Sharing & Permissions window, the "Make me the owner" option is grayed out even after I unlock the options.  I tried resolution for issue 1 here.  And I also tried those terminal commands to no avail.  When I access Time Machine from the dock, all the backups prior to my reinstall are listed, but I can't access them.  Anyone have any other ideas?  This is extremely frustrating.  Note: I am able to copy over files from the backups created after I reinstalled Snow Leopard.
    sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/Volumename
    sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/Volumename
    sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Volumename
    sudo chmod -N /Volumes/Volumename

    I personally think that Time Machine is a magical process run by unicorns.
    I just moved from a MacBook Pro to a brand spanking new iMac 27". My iPad just does everything that I need a laptop to do, and an iMac is so much more powerful than a MBP.
    Anyways, I setup my new iMac with the MBP Time Machine backup, as I usually do with new Macs. As I was going to sell my MBP, I was just going to use my 3TB Time Machine drive on my new iMac, thinking that I'd lose 9 months of backups, as I usually do with a new Mac. Except, apparently with Mountain Lion, the unicorns and wizards have decided that the old Time Machine backups are now transferred to the new iMac. So, even though my iMac is only 15 days old, it shows 9 months of backups. Which was a lifesaver, because an important photo got corrupted in the restore process, and I found it in the Wayback Machine.
    Cool stuff.

  • Partitioning Hard Drive for Use with Mac (Time Machine) and Windows

    I have a brand new Imac on which I am also running WIndows Vista through Boot Camp (sweet, by the way). I have a large external hard drive on which I set up Time Machine easily enough. I would like to partition the drive somehow so that I could use half the drive to separately back up files on the WIndows side, but I can't seem to do this. Any suggestions? Is this even possible with Time Machine?

    You can use Disk Utility create two partitions. Choose FAT for the Windows partition and Mac Extended (Journaled) for the Mac. One limitation of FAT32 is that you can't write files bigger than 4GB. You can reformat this partition as NTFS within Vista which will allow bigger file sizes but you won't be able to write to this partition from within OS X without other utilities. Also you can't write to the OS X partition from Vista without other software.
    Time Machine will not be able to back up the windows formatted drive partition.

  • Problem with encrypted Time Machine

    First of all: forgive me for my english.....
    I installed Lion a month ago and I encryped the partiton on an external Hard Drive that I use for Time Machine (TM). The HD has three partitions:
    1) for TM;
    2) a copy of the Macintosh HD made with Carbon Copy Cloner;
    3) an NTFS partition with some Windows data.
    For the first month everything works good but a week ago I pluged in my HD and it requested me the password for the encrypted volume (TM)...I typed it in but it said that it wasn't correct....so I can no more open my backups...
    Now every time I connect the external HD there is a message that say "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with three oprions "Inizialize, ignore, eject".
    After that it request me the password but it say that is not correct...
    In the Partition menu of Utility Disk there is this message: "Disk Utility cannot modify this disk because it contains CoreStorage physical volumes. Use command line diskutilinstead".
    Can anyone helps me??

    Call Applecare (800-275-2273), but I think you may have lost access to that drive.

  • Permission Problems with Leopard & Time Machine are ridiculous!

    I just had a hard drive die in a MacBook. I installed a new drive and restored from TM.
    Only to find out I have absolutely no ownership to anything in my home directory.
    System & Admin -r/w, everyone r --- no where is my id mentioned as having ANY r/w access.
    Leopard has been a disaster on 2 out of 3 Macs I've installed it on.
    If I wanted this kind of crap I'd use Windows full time.

    You'll need to reset permissions on your home directory. Follow these steps:
    1) Boot from your Leopard install CD/DVD (insert it, shut down, start while holding "C")
    2) Choose your language.
    3) When the menubar appears, select Utilities>Reset Password.
    4) In the window that appears, select your boot volume (by default, "Macintosh HD") from the list at the top.
    5) In the popup menu below the volume list, select an affected user. (One that you used "Apply to enclosed items" on).
    6) Click the "Reset" button at the bottom of the window. This will reset the permissions (and ACLs) back to their default settings.
    7) Repeat Steps 5 & 6 for every user on your machine who has this problem (except "System Administrator (Root)").
    There is one bug in this process, so you need to take some additional steps to get permissions back to how they should be.
    8) Log in to an account you reset the permissions for.
    9) Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
    10) Copy the blue text in, and press "return". chgrp -R `id -gn` ~
    11) You won't see anything happen, but you can check that it worked by selecting your home folder, and clicking File>Get Info. You will see either "unknown" or "staff" under "Sharing and Permissions", depending on how you installed Leopard. Either one is fine.
    12) Repeat the steps 8-11 for every account that you reset permissions for on your machine. (Remember, NOT "System Administrator (Root)").
    Good luck!

  • AD account Login problem with MAC 10.6.8

    Hi All,
    We have around 50 odd MAC that are connected to windows server 2008 R2. the user were logining in to these MACs using their AD account. Recently few of the random MAC did not allow the user to login using their AD account.When analyzed though the MAC shows that it has connected to the Domain and the server is active with green button it has unbind itself from the server.I had to login in as local user bind the MAC back to get this resolved.
    Now the same has started happeneing for most of the MAC that we have and every morning I have login as local Admin and unbind / bind the MAC with the server. this gets reset once the user reboots or shutsdown.
    Have tried with few of the below solution but nothing helped:
    Solution 1:
    <key>mdns_timeout</key>
    <integer>2</integer>
    The integer value is in seconds; changing it to at least 5 should allow the Mac OS X client to reconnect to the Active Directory domain after a network interruption. In some configurations, a larger timeout value may be required.
    You can change this value by using the sudo command and a text editor to edit the preference file directly. Or you can use the Terminal command below, making sure to enter it all on a single line:
    sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Set :mdns_timeout 5' /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/IPMonitor.bundle/Contents/Info.plist
    Solution 2:
    I have seen all of the probable solutions and tried everything and still I am getting issues with 10.6.6 and after rebooting the Mac gets unbind. Or the Mac gets Network Accounts Available even when not accessing the list of users from AD. But the thing that I have done that has solved all my issues with AD on the Macs is to uncheck the box to search on all domains. For some reason I am seeing that when the Macs have this option checked, it searches through out the forest on the same domain controller more than once, so AD stops the handshaking of the authentication.
    I hope this helps like it did on our Network, since then I have not seen the Macs lose the binding or slow SMB.
    If you've tried this please let us know.
    TIP: Uncheck Allow Authentication from any domain for Mac AD problems
    Wednesday, April 20, 2011
    Steven Wells sent a fix and an explanation of problems with Macs losing their binding to Active Diretory:
    Unchecking "Allow authentication from any domain in the forest" is working at our college. We have been beating our heads on this for about 2 terms, with no understanding of why it works in some places and not in others. When we found this working, our IT guy said that the Security SID is being duplicated, when it looks in other domain forest, and that is what is causing the problem. This is the first time I have found an explanation for the problem.
    If you've tried this approach please let us know.
    Solution 3:
    Solved it. Create a file in Textedit with the name 'auto_master' (no file extension) with the following contents:
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master # Use directory service
    /net -hosts -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home auto_home -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    #/Network/Servers -fstab
    /- -static
    Place this in /etc/ folder
    Hope this helps

    TIP: a Kerberos fix for OS X 10.5 and 10.6 binding to Active directory

    Mehdi Mafi forwarded a fix he found for problems with Leopard and Snow Leopard binding to Active Directory:
    This was taken from Dane Riley's imaging building for DeployStudio.
    With Mac OS X Leopard every Mac is now running a KDC (Kerberos Distribution Center). Basically each imaged machine is using the same security certificate and hash. Deploying a single image will deploy the same KDC to every system. This [Apple] article covers how to reset the local KDC so that each system is unique. Basically, do the following:
    Launch Keychain Access
    Search for com.apple.kerberos.kdc and delete all 3 items
    Using Terminal type sudo rm -fr /var/db/krb5kdc
    After deployment, perhaps using Apple Remote Desktop to all systems, re- establish the KDC by typing sudo /usr/libexec/configureLocalKDC
    If you've tried this approach with Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, or even Lion, please let us know. .
    TIP: More on a kerberos fix for AD binding problems
    Monday, November 14, 2011
    Mehdi Mafi updated his Friday report about Mac OS X 10.6 problems binding to Active Directory:
    You may want to add this. If the Mac keeps unbinding from AD (people can't log in to a Mac), here is how to fix it:
    Unbind it from Domain
    Launch Keychain Access
    Search for com.apple.kerberos.kdc and delete all 3 items
    Using Terminal type sudo rm -fr /var/db/krb5kdc
    Re-establish the KDC by typing sudo /usr/libexec/configureLocalKDC
    Bind it to domain again ( When you bind, uncheck allow authentication from any domain in the forest in: Directory Utilitiy-> Advanced Options\Administrative ) this fix the issue that sometimes it can' find AD under search space.
    If you tried this please let us know.
    Solution 5:
    For Snow Leopard AD login issues, use upper case domain
    Solution 6: for .local
    To create this StartupItem, create the following directory as root:
    /Library/StartupItems/FixADAuth
    Then chown it to root:wheel and chmod it to 755. These must also be the owner/permissions on the two files it will contain, below:
    Contents of our /Library/StartupItems/FixADAuth/FixADAuth:
    #!/bin/bash
    . /etc/rc.common
    date > /var/log/FixADAuth.log
    n=0
    AuthSuccess=0
    while [ $AuthSuccess != 1 ]
    do
    id Administrator && AuthSuccess=1 || networksetup -setsearchdomains Ethernet "Empty"; networksetup -setsearchdomains Ethernet middlewich.local; n=$(($n+1))
    done
    echo Authentication successful: $AuthSuccess >> /var/log/FixADAuth.log echo Operation count: $n >> /var/log/FixADAuth.log
    date >> /var/log/FixADAuth.log
    Contents of our /Library/StartupItems/FixADAuth/StartupParameters.plist:
    Description = "Fixes Active Directory authentication issue";
    Uses = ("Disks");
    Obviously you'll need to change "middlewich.local" to your own domain name (and the network interface name if your connection is wireless). The script checks to see if it can see the user "Administrator" on the domain, as he's a fairly common bloke, but if you've renamed yours for security reasons then pick another one. I've also included some logging functionality for debug purposes, so you can verify how well the script is working if you need to and time it in your environment before telling the users how long to wait. The /var/log/FixADAuth.log file will contain the date/time the process started, the success variable set to 1 (just to verify), how many DNS operations were required to fix the problem, and the date/time it ended. For us the time difference is normally about +30-40 seconds with around 120-180 operations taking place. Once you're happy with the script, you can strip it down to its bare functionality if you like, like so for us:
    #!/bin/bash
    . /etc/rc.common
    AuthSuccess=0
    while [ $AuthSuccess != 1 ]
    do
    id Administrator && AuthSuccess=1 || networksetup -setsearchdomains Ethernet "Empty"; networksetup -setsearchdomains Ethernet middlewich.local
    done
    I hope this helps someone!
    Regards

    You are welcome.
    But the question is 10.6 mac  just like 10.6.8  , as long  as its the same and works.
    Yes. You can save some updates by using the combo update.

    I have bought a WD My Book World Edition to use for back-up of my iMac, but when I try and log onto the drive with Apple time Machine (back-up software) or connect in any other way I get the message 'There was a problem connecting to the server "MybookWorld.local" The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'
    It is a brand new iMac and running Lion OSX
    Any ideas on how to solve would be gratefully received?

    Followed the directions on this page and it worked!
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423
    Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
    [1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
    [2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
    [3] Switch to advanced mode.
    [4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
    [5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
    [6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
    [7] Make a note of the IP address
    Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
    Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
    [8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
    [9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
    Code:
    ssh [email protected]
    [10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
    [11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
    Code:
    wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
    [12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
    Code:
    sh install_netatalk.sh
    [13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
    [14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

    I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
    Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
    external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
    A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
    Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
    Machine is not backing up my files
    on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
    is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

    If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
    You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
    Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
    TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
    You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

  • Problem with a time zone in Belarus, Minsk

    All Belarus users of Mac and iPhone/iPad have a problem with a time zone in Belarus, Minsk. If you set time in AUTO, then time going down for 1 hour from actual time. That is happened after Belarus didn't went for winter time this year. In this case on all Mac's and iPhones and iPad's didn't work at all Face Time, iMessage, iChat. Apple still not reacting for this problem.

    Same issue here... That is really annoying when such a good things like iCal sync just doesn't work.
    Also, in case if you trying fix it somehow... here is a lot of issues related to this one. e.g. if the time zone settings were set in manual order; we're get an authorization issue with applications like Twitter...

  • Unexpected problem with this printable

    Started by trying to stop the printing of the "Samples" printable that was acquired accidentally.  Tried directions found in the forums to no avail.  Tried through the HP Go manageprint route and never saw the minus sign in the printable header as described.  Trying on the control panel of the printer, I get to the "Select activity" option and select the "Schedule it" icon.  Loading....then error message:  "There was an unexpected problem with this printable.  Please try again later."  I also had problems previously connecting to web services when I tried to scan a document to my email address (which I have done many time previously successfully). Performed wireless network test and all results were good.  Something is screwed up.  Any assistance is appreciated.

     I suspect the whole setup is "not quite right" and that is not your fault -- it is a multi-step process and if it does go well the first time around, it can seem like the size 14 is a solution to fit the need. I do not have an answer - know that.  The print App is stuck, no doubt about that. I will try and help you straighten out the setup; understand I am not a Printer Expert.  Not.  This may make it worse. You might want to call Cloud Services if you can do so...  SideBar:At the least, the Snapfish bits may be just one more worm in the bucket of troubles - at this point, you might as well Click Reset Snapfish -- frankly, while used to understand what Snapfish is and why it might be on the printer panel, I have never heard of Snapfish Country.  Final note about Snapfish -- if you ever get into some sort of evil loop about logging into (creating) your HP Connected Account and it is offing something about Snapfish account -- saying you have to have the Snapfish account or you can just die and never be able to log into your HP Connected Account:  Give the program what it wants --- it is a bug.  Create the Snapfish account and you will be able to get in.  I did not write the program.  I did not create the bug.  I may have done some stupid things when I wrote code in my life -- this one is not mine.  Smiling. You can "reset" at least the "web services" by simply disabling Web Services on the printer front panel.  This is perhaps a good plan all things considered; you might read first and then decide. The one thing I have noted is that I have never had had any luck resetting, redoing, or entering much of anything from a printer panel.  I lack the patience to type on tiny panels. I do know the Printable / Print App has to be "scheduled", that is, active before it can be cancelled.  So, if it is in some sort of zombie state of half-life, you may want log in to your HP Connected account and make sure the Print App is "active" -- then try to kill it. Also -- see the note below about the Safari browser -- there may be other browsers (Chrome??) that do not handle the HP Connected account management page setup.  There are several parts to the whole "ePrint" business.   The following might be useful to help you make sure you have your setup in place.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Reference:Add Device to Printer See Section:Computer gets Full Feature Software (Printer Software)If you are printing from a mobile device on the same (home) network, then you probably have a home computer in the mix (on that same network).  On that home computer, you would want to have installed the Full Feature Software for the Printer. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ePrint SetupThe ePrint setup on ePrint capable printers involves the setting of the printer's own email address and the switching on of the ePrint service on the printer.  The ePrint email address is the email address to which you send your print jobs from your mobile device(s).  Note that a mobile device can also include your notebook computer.  "If you can send an email, you can use ePrint." -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The HP Connected AccountThe HP Connected Account (still called ePrint account in some countrys) is the account you use to manage your ePrint setup.  You can customize your ePrint email address, add / remove your ePrint printer from the HP Connected account, check your ePrint job log, and -- when things are working as intended -- manage your Print Apps (formally Printables). For example,If you have had to Reset Web Services, you may need to log into your HP Connected Account > Settings > and Add your printer. If you have had to Reset Web Services, you must change your Custom ePrint email address. If you gave your ePrint address to someone you no longer "like", you can change the address or remove that person from the "Allowed Senders" list. There are a couple of oddities having to do with the managing of the HP Connected Account.  For all that it is intended to be fully functional under most circumstances, some Browsers do not seem to be able to handle the code in which the WebPage is written.  Safari is notorious for not handling the Print Apps section of the HP Connected setup.   If you have trouble managing the features in  your HP Connected Account, try a different Browser. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mobile Device / iPad gets an App Once everything else is set up, mobile device(s) can be added to the ePrint setup.  The type of Application used to support the mobile device depends on the device. For example, iPhone and other Apple flavored products typically use those products found in the Apply Store.  Android has its own download, etc. Most devices and printers that can be connected with ePrint or some sort of Cloud or Web services print service are mentioned and / or covered in the Mobile Printing Link in the document. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Troubleshooting and Additional HelpTips, Suggestions, lists, and extra "bits".   When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Click my Answer Accept as Solution to help others find Answers.
