HT201250 When getting a replacement Seagate hard drive for my Imac through Apple, will they restore my system to it's current state? Or will I have to do it myself though Time Machine? Will Time machine restore all the programs as well?

Apple has determined that certain Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail. These systems were sold between October 2009 and July 2011.
Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will replace affected hard drives free of charge.
Will this replacement program restore my system to its current state after the new drive is installed? If not, will I have to have all my original disks to re-install all the programs on my current computer, or will Time Machine restore them as well?

Most of them will tell you to backup your data.
Time Machine is nice, but unless you are interested in archival backup, Carbon Copy Cloner is a lot easier to recover from:

  • I just replaced my hard drive on my imac and now when i turn the computer on the fan is running and slowly gets louder and louder. how do i turn it off?

I just replace my hard drive on my imac and now when i turn the computer on the fan starts running and keeps getting louder. How do i turn it off?
    thanks.

If your machine was made after 2009 you probably installed th wrong HD. Beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's that had an integrated fan sensor. If you did not use one of these drives then that is the problem. You should contact OWC (www.macsales.com) or visit your local AASP and they will help you select the correct HD to use.

  • Is it possible to use aMacBoock Pro as a hard drive for my iMac?

Is it possible to use aMacBoock Pro as a hard drive for my iMac?

Yes, if both machines have FireWire ports (400 or 800, they're both OK):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Probably (maybe?), if both machines have Thunderbolt ports and you have a Thunderbolt cable:
    http://www.cultofmac.com/thunderbolt-target-disk-mode-requires-apples-special-ca ble-tip/103270
If the same port isn't available on both machines, I don't think so.

  • Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

You can buy any 3'5" SATA hard drive for the iMac. You can buy a hard drive at OWC.
Note that Late 2009 and newer iMacs have the temperature sensor inside the hard drive, so it's important to get one with that sensor. In this case, I recommend you to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and get your hard disk replaced

  • I want to use my 1TB Seagate Hard drive for time machine and transferring files from Mac to PC.

For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. I'm not what you would call tech savvy, so I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to do this.
    Thanks in advance.

To do it, you have to partition the hard disk, so you will have one partition for Time Machine and another one to store files and use them in a PC and Mac. To create the partition, follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC

  • Time Capsule as Hard Drive for older iMac

After upgrading to Snow Leopard on my MacBook, my family now has four laptops that can take advantage of time machine for wireless backups, so I want to buy time capsule to do that easily. Will I also be able to use it as a hard drive for an older non-intel iMac that can't be upgraded from Tiger to Leopard? In other words, will I be able to simply drag files to time capsule via ethernet or USB (no airport card on the iMac either!)

    Yes.

    Through Ethernet. USB won't work.

  • Trying to install SL on a new hard-drive for my iMac, when asked which disk to install on it gave me no options, i followed advice from another forum and created a partition, now can't boot from the new drive at all. Help?

I've had **** with my iMac, the hard-drive failed so i replaced it with a new 1TB Samsung drive. Then when i tried to install SL from the install disk, all went to plan until it asked me which drive i wanted to install it on, where it came up with a box where my options should have been, but instead it didn't give me any options to install it on any drive i.e. it asked which drive i wanted to install it on but no drives came up to select.
So i followed the advice from another forum, look at the 'Extended Hard-drive preparation' response
    ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/10576009#10576009 )
After following these instructions i have now got a new partition, but when i restarted my computer to install SL on the drive, the option to boot from the drive is now not available, now i must boot from the install disk, whereas before i was able to boot from either the install disk or the hard drive. The hard drive is still visible in disk utility as it always has been, but i am now unable to boot from it, let alone install SL.
Please help my iMac has been broken for months and i've been trying to fix it for so long and am getting problem after problem. Thank you!

    Hi db2
That off the shelf MS-DOS / FAT-32 drive needs to re-partitioned GUID Partition Table / Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you can install OS X and Startup your Intel iMac from it.
    1. Boot from your original install or retail SL DVD and open Disk Utility.
    2. Highlight the new HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.
    3. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button.
    4. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.
    5. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply button.
    6. Once thats done, then you can do a clean SL Install, Restore from TM , your old HD or  Bootable Clone.

  • I had to replace my hard drive in my iMac iSight and now I need to load an os all I have is my windows laptop any help?

I just had to replace the hard drive on my iMac iSight G5 and now I have no os and have no idea where my restore discs are i was wondering if I purchased an os from apple if there is a way I can load it onto dvd then load my iMac

You can contact Apple at 800-767-2775, give them your serial number (under the foot of your iMac) and they will, for a small fee, send you the install disc.  Then buy a black retail OS from Apple or eBay.

  • Looking for replacement internal hard drives for a MacPro

Looking to replace internal hard drives in a MacPro.  Was thinking about 3TB.  Any recommendations?

Look in System Report for the link speed available. (Mine says 3 Gigabit.) Get drives with at least that speed; going beyond that won't get you any more performance.

  • HT201250 Can I share an external hard drive for Time Machine with my PC?

I am using a PC with an external hard drive. I have a new MacBook and would like to back up the files on the external hard drive as well. Time Machine set-up notified me that if I continued my external hard drive would be wiped clean. Is there a way to save the files from my PC and add Time Machine?

Use the DIsk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to repartition the drive. The new partition needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
If you want to back up the contents of that drive and not use that drive for holding backups, you need to use another backup method, such as drag-copying files or cloning.

  • I have used a Seagate external hard drive for my Mac desktop. It is malfunctioning. Can I disconnect and depend on iCloud to keep my documents, music, and photos backed up safe and secure? I use the Cloud for phone, pad and desktop.

Can I expect iCloud to safely back up and secure my documents, music and pictures? I am using Cloud on phone, pad, and desktop. Have depended on external hard drive in the past. It is malfunctioning. Will the Cloud replace it for storage and safety?

Time Machine in itself, without an external drive may well be good for instances where you accidentally delete documents that you later require. However in the event of a hard drive failure, if Time Machine backup is kept on the same drive as the original items, it will not be much use to you.
In my opinion, it is vitally important that you have an external drive for backup, whether you use Time Machine or a another backup solution is entirely up to you.
My situation is slightly unusual, I have four hard drives in my computer and multiple arrays of hard drive enclosures with multiple hard drives within them (in total I have 40 TB of storage). As a result of this I tend to employ more than one backup procedure, I use Time Machine to backup some items and a utility called tri-backup to backup other items. I also keep two backups of everything.
Time Machine is free, it's included with your operating system, I wonder if you mean time capsule.

  • How to replace my Hard drive for a bigger one on my Imac(intel)

    Good day
Can someone tell me where to find out how to replace my Imac 21.5 inch screen hard drive??
it has a 500Gig HD but its to small and dont really want to add an external one. Can someone guide me on how to change it and also what is the max size that I can use in it ???

Visit OWC to see if they have a tutorial. They also have disk drives. If you prefer you can send your computer to them and they will do the job for you at a flat fee that's very reasonable.

  • Replace failed Hard Drives for all Minis out of warranty?

I bought a mini in March 2005 and the Hard Drive has now failed. Ok, I am aware it is out of warranty but if all those minis on here are having hard drive faults surely apple should replace them?
Well we can but wish ....

    All?
We don't know for sure how many minis have been sold in the (almost) three years they have been in production, but it's reasonable to think there have been a very large number. In comparison to that volume, the number of failures of hard drives reported here seems remarkably low - certainly nothing that would indicate a generic problem or failure.
To be sure, as with any mass production, there are some units which are either faulty or contain faulty components, and Apple should stand by those products and make them good. By and large they appear to do so. However, a drive failure after almost three years of use would not be something you could typically expect them to take responsibility for - particularly not in the absence of widespread reports of failures of the same drives in other systems. The rather sporadic reports we see here and elsewhere don't really rise to that standard by any interpretation.
